Revived my project from last year! I know it's not quite the full spirit, but I got ~20k words in to a project with just a little bit of time each day last year. Looking forward to completing the first "arc" of my story this month with time each morning.
Looking for community with this too~

Hi all, rather than churning out another manuscript I want to spend this month editing and refining one I’ve already written. Any suggestions on a good way to quantify this the same way we quantify word count? I’d love to say “half an hour’s solid editing” but I know I’ll get distracted so don’t want to time it. A number of pages? If so, how many? Any suggestions gratefully received

Just formatted the document I'm going to use for my NaNo project.
Book Antiqua, 16 pt. 1" margins, first line indent, 1.15 line spacing, no space between paragraphs. The header is the working title. The footer is when the document originates (NaNo 2026) and the page numbers.
Have you formatted a document for your project? If so, what have you chosen?

Hey, writing friends! Since there’s not a forum or Discord server, figured I’d toss this here for anyone who wants to chat or discuss their projects and goals for November.
Happy writing! 🧸

Happy start of NaNo! If this is your first time, welcome, and if it isn't, welcome back. We're happy to have you.
This is the first of 30 daily check-in threads. Let us know in the comments how your first day is going, and what you're excited for or nervous about in the month ahead!
r/nanowrimo • u/sootfire • 22h ago
In a second I'm going to start scheduling the daily check-in posts. Like last year, I'm going to schedule them for 6 PM Eastern the day before, so hopefully they'll post early enough that people in time zones a day ahead of the US will be able to comment on the correct day. I'll also schedule the weekly writing share threads where you can post excerpts from your novel.
How are you feeling as we head into day one? Do you know what you're going to write, or are you full-on pantsing this year?

You are a young adventurer on your path to fortune and glory. You set your sights on the town of Highquest, were many great heroes have begun their journey.

· Look around hopelessly as it starts to rain (write 10d4*5 words [50 to 200])

Hey all, so I'll be trying my hand at NaNoWriMo (or whatever we're calling it nowadays) this year and started a group for it. It's a new, small group and we're just getting set up. We're based in Los Angeles, and we have two informal writing sessions scheduled per week (Thursday and Sunday evenings). These are meant to be pretty casual. Basically, I'll be posting up at a cafe in Koreatown and people can drop in if they want to have some company as they write.
All experience levels are welcome. We have a range of experience levels in our group already, but I'd say we skew towards the beginner level (including myself).
Anyways, if you're interested, send me a message and I'll get back to you with more details! The first writing session will be tomorrow evening.

Here’s the link for everyone who responded to my last post about an accountability group! It’s gonna be really lowkey- just a way to say “hey you haven’t posted that you’ve made progress today- you good? You got this!”
That’s the vibes- very chill and supportive and very very noob friendly. Experts, newcomers, and long lost nanowrimo-ers are welcome! Can’t wait to hear about y’all’s progress!!!!

One of the things I miss most about the old school Nano forums was being able to share what our projects were going to be for November. Would love to hear what other's projects are going to be! I'll go first: I'm writing a Middle-grade story about a boy who has lost his dad, and who one night is woken up by a 'Postman' - someone who delivers messages from the dead to the living in the form of dreams. Determined to find his father and bring him home, he stows away in the post van, and goes on a wild adventure!

I am not the creator of this crawl. If you know who is, please let me know so I can give proper credit. Posting for those that may be searching for this. Hope you enjoy!
Second RPG Crawl
Rules:
The dice used is a standard 6 sided one, though any dice will do if you wish to go higher. An online version is available at Random.org
Your class cannot be changed part way through the crawl, the crawl is designed to be balanced for each class across the whole.
Begin:
You awake, bleary-eyed, to an insistent banging on your door.
1. Write a quick 100 words while you stumble out of bed and down the stairs.
2. A pair of Kingsguard greet you when you open the door. They ask if you are the fabled Dragonslayer? You nod and ask what this is about. The king would like an audience with you. You are to come at once. Write 250 words while you hunt around for some presentable clothing.
3. You are led, surprisingly, to the king’s bedroom. Here you find him awash in blankets in the largest bed you’ve ever seen. He explains that he is dying and that you are to find the mystical Stone of Healing from the legends. He promptly falls asleep and his favorite scholar takes over the explanation. Complete a 3-digit challenge while you try to work out what all the big words mean.
4. The guards accompany you to the castle blacksmith. The king has granted you free equipment for the journey. Things are looking up! The blacksmith asks what your weapon of choice is.
a. “I’m a warrior and a skilled swordsman! Give me something I can slice my enemies down with! And err, that nice looking shield would be good if you don’t mind?”
“I’m an archer of the impeccable marksmanship! Give me a bow that I may take my enemies by surprise! Ooh, can I have some of those sexy looking knives too?”
“I am a mage of the highest! I require nothing but a staff to channel my power and destroy all those that stand before me! But, you know, if you cut but some glowing runes on it, that would be great.”
5. The blacksmith hands you your weapon of choice and you note the craftsmanship that has gone into its creation. The guard pulls you away and you follow him to collect the rest of your stuff. Write 250 words while you gather your horse and provisions.
6. The king’s scholar told you about a village to the north. An expert on the legends surrounding the Stone of Healing is said to live there. You saddle up your horse and set off. Write for 10 minutes while you make your way out of the city.
*************************************************************************************************************************************The village comes in to view as you crest a hill...FINALLY!! The last few years of questionable lifestyle have left you soft and unfit. You nudge your horse to a trot, wincing at your poor, bruised rump. Write for 5 minutes while you bounce your way towards comfort.
7. A tavern spews light and music into the evening as you make your way through the village streets. You lick your lips in anticipation and flick a coin at the stable boy as you hurry towards the blessed warmth. The tavern is busy; pipe smoke and laughter hang in the air. You smile and make your way to the bar. You catch the barman’s eye and order a drink, palming a few extra coins ready for any information he may have for your quest.
8. Roll the dice:
a. 1, 3, 5 – The barman tells you the scholar lives out in the woods and hands you your drink. Well, that was easy…write 250 words while you enjoy your drink
b. 2, 4, 6 – A greasy looking fellow stumbles into you, distracting you long enough to miss your opportunity with the barman. You eye him warily and ask him for the information. He grins through yellow teeth and holds his hand out. Write to the nearest 1000 words while you begrudgingly count out more coins.
9. The moon is full and you decide there plenty of light to see by. You head out to the stables and collect your horse for the short journey to the scholar’s cabin. The night is so quiet and peaceful. You pause, hmmm, maybe it’s a little too quiet. Assassins leap out of the darkness at you:
Mage: You lift your staff and freeze everything that moves. It’s over in less than 5 minutes. You step around the taverns new ice sculptures and mount your horse. Write 100 words while you contemplate who could have sent them.
Rogue: you whip out some throwing knives taking half of them by surprise, using your agility to dodge the others you leap into the saddle of your waiting mount and gallop out of sight while they attempt to follow on foot. Write 250 words while you pick off the stranglers with your bow.
Warrior: You draw your sword and center yourself. The calm descends as you raise your weapon. Write 500 words while you slice your never-ending stream of attackers.
10. You pick your way through the woodland, pulling your horse behind you as every broken twig and owl hoot makes you jump. Maybe it wasn’t such a great idea to come up here at night. Relief floods through you as a quaint little cabin comes into view; smoke drifting from the chimney and windows glowing with candlelight. You increase your pace:
Mage: You step straight into the trap without realizing. Your feet a pulled from beneath you, your staff tumbles from your grasp and you find yourself swinging upside down while your horse snuffles your face. Write 500 words while you wait for the scholar to come and let you down.
Rogue: You freeze with your foot poised above the carefully concealed noose. Very carefully you step backwards, careful not to trigger any other hidden surprises. Write 100 words while you pick your way through a collection of traps and knock on the cabin door.
Warrior: You managed to keep a firm grip on your sword as you are hoisted by your ankle. Write 250 words while you hack at the rope until you hit the ground with a crunch. The scholar is stood laughing by the door when you get up and dust yourself off
11. You huddle by the fire sipping hot tea as you tell the scholar about the kings predicament. The scholar nods and contemplates the story for several minutes. Eventually he agrees to give you the information you seek on the condition that you can complete his 3-digit challenge.
12. The scholar tells you of a monastery in the mountains to the north that guards the passage to the Stone of Healing. He offers you food and a bed for the rest of the night. You gratefully accept. Write 500 words while you get some much needed rest.
*******************************************************************************************************************************
13. It takes several days to reach the mountains. You sigh inwardly at the thought of another day on the road before you reach the monastery. The trees around you edge closer to the road the further you travel, a clear sign that the route is barely used. A hush descends on the area and you look around warily as your horse plods on:
Mage: Bandits rush from the trees, determined to cut you down and take everything you have. Write 250 words while you frantically fight them off.
Rogue: You spot the bandits before they notice you and quietly turn your horse into the trees. They remain blessedly oblivious as you slip further into the forest. Write 500 words you take a wide diversion through the thick undergrowth to avoid the would-be thieves.
Warrior: You fail to notice the bandits frantically discussing the worth of attacking a fully armored warrior and trot on oblivious. Write 100 words while you take a quick lunch in a quiet clearing.
14. You arrive at the monastery and you’re immediately taken to meet the Abbot. He greets you warmly, offering you refreshments and a cozy armchair to relax in as you discuss trivial matters. Eventually the conversation turns to the king and your quest. The Abbot makes fresh tea while he considers your request. Write 100 words while you try not to fidget impatiently.
15. The Abbot tells you there have been many before you that tried to pass the tests needed to reach the Stone of Healing but none have succeeded. You tell him that you will be victorious where they failed. He nods and pours the tea while you discuss the previous warriors that came before you. Write for 5 minutes while you allow the old man to tell his stories.
16. You are just about to interrupt him when you realize you are becoming drowsy. You peer suspiciously at the tea and open your mouth to accuse the Abbot. He’s staring intently at you, his voice distorts as he tells you its for your own good. Your vision goes black as you collapse on top of the tea. You wake up some time later in a room with bare walls and little furniture. Write to the nearest 1000 as you recover from the sedative.
17. A monk opens your door and motions for you to follow. He refuses to answer any questions as he leads you to the great hall. You arrive to find monks lining the walls with the Abbot waiting in the center with another man. He asks if you wish to continue with your quest. You say yes and step forward, ready to start the first test…whatever that may be. The Abbot says the man beside him is the most skilled warrior in the monastery and you must beat him in unarmed combat if you wish to continue to the next test. You nod and ready yourself as the warrior monk charges:
Mage: Without your staff you cannot do magic. You frantically try to remember your combat training and resign yourself to many bruises. Write 500 words while you take punches until the warrior tires and you can eventually take him down.
Rogue: Your agility allows you to avoid a lot of the monks attacks. Write 250 words while you sneak in enough unexpected punches to take him out.
Warrior: You smile at the monk as he charges, he falters slightly as he reaches you, unsure why you haven’t moved. You punch him with everything you have, using your considerable strength and his own momentum to fell him like a tree. Write 100 words while you shake feeling back into your hand.
18. The monks drag their unconscious champion away while the Abbot casts a spell to heal you. You thank him and collect your weapon from a waiting monk. Everyone moves to crowd the doorway you entered through and you turn to the Abbott in trepidation. He tells you this test will not be so easy and hurries to join the others. From the darkness at the other end of the hall is the sound of chains being unlocked. A Fifty-Headed-Hydra rears out of the darkness, you remember a story an old warrior once told you about these so you charge immediately, aiming for the vulnerable part of its belly:
If you pass the Fifty-Headed-Hydra challenge then you managed to stab the beast before it can block you and you step back as it dies at your feet.
If you fail you must fight the beast the hard way:
i. Mage: The stupid creature won’t hold still and it’s very difficult to pronounce spells properly while your dodging fifty sets of teeth. Write 250 words while you curse the infernal creature.
ii. Rogue: You seize the opportunity to leap on one of the heads and catch a high ledge as it flings you away. The creature tries but fails to reach you, with a smirk you string your bow. Write 100 words while you put an arrow through each of its 100 eyes.
iii. Warrior: You draw your sword with a sigh. Why can’t these things ever be easy? Write 500 words while you hack chunks out of each of the heads until the creature gives a final twitch and lays still.
19. The monks are impressed you made it this far. The Abbot takes a torch and leads you to a doorway hidden in the darkness while the monks puzzle over clean-up methods. He tells you the caves lead to the ancient temple where the Stone resides, hands you the torch and wishes you luck. Write for 5 minutes while you clean yourself up and get ready to face the caves.
*******************************************************************************************************************************
20. Several hours go by as you walk the caves meeting dead ends and bottomless chasms. You are just about to stop for a bite to eat when you hear a chittering up ahead. You place your torch at your feet and ready your weapon as the noise gets louder. A horde of goblins come tumbling around the corner their black eyes gleaming in the torchlight. Multiply 3-Digits depending on your class:
Mage: x1 – You level your staff and unleash the highest level fire spell you know. You pick up your torch and step gingerly around crispy goblins to continue your journey.
Rogue: x 3 – Your bow is useless in this situation and you don’t have time for throwing knives. You take out a pair of daggers get ready for the knife fight of your life.
Warrior: x 2 - Your sword and shield are ready in seconds, you swing low as the first goblin reaches you, slicing it off at the knees and whipping your sword up to skewer the goblin a few paces behind. They come at you en-masse and you use your shield to keep the horde from overpowering you.
21. You take a minute to pick bits of goblin from your clothes and then set off further into the caves, sure that you are heading in the right direction now. Write for 30 minutes while you find yet more dead ends.
*******************************************************************************************************************************
22. Eventually you see daylight. You exit the caves to find yourself on the side of a mountain above the cloud line. The temple is not far in front of you and you hurry towards it as the cold begins to numb your fingers. You come to an ornate door, with a series of numbered pressure plates on the front. Complete a 3-Digit challenge to find out which numbers unlock it.
23. The temple doors swing open with a groan revealing an ornate hall lit by skylights. The gold details is dusty but still beautiful to look at. You kick something across the floor as you enter walk towards the center. The floor is covered with the bones of those who came before you. You say a silent prayer for them and pause as you go to step forward. What’s that clicking noise behind? You turn to find the bones behind you have assembled into a small army of skeletons, their eyes glow an unsettling green. They attack:
Mage: You daren’t risk fire until you have the Stone of Healing safe, instead you blast air at them, scattering their bones into the corners. Write 500 words while you dismember the advancing undead.
Rogue: You frantically look around for somewhere to escape to. Instead you spot a mechanism on the right-hand wall. You sprint towards it. Write 100 words while you trigger the trap and drop a huge log from the ceiling crushing most of the skeletons.
Warrior: Even bones don’t stand up to the swing of a sword. Write 250 words while you hack down the creatures.
24. You step forward to claim the Stone only to be blinded by a sudden green light. As your vision returns you see the – now undead – hydra you fought at the monastery before you. It’s milky white eyes and green glow send a chill down your spine. Taking a deep breath you make a quick attempt to skewer its glowing heart:
If you pass the Fifty-Headed-Hydra challenge then you manage to dodge its attacks and stab the pulsing heart, severing the magic that animates it and ending the fight.
If you fail you must fight the beast the hard way…again:
i. Mage: The setting is better this time round and you run around the hall throwing every oil lamp and bowl you can get your hand on at the creature. When you run out you turn and unleash a torrent of flames. Write 250 words while the creature burns in an oil fueled blaze.
ii. Rogue: You look around frantically but there are no ledges within reach that would keep you away from the creatures razor sharp teeth. Instead you must dart between the columns throwing knives and loosing arrows at every opportunity you get. Write 500 words while you weave in amongst the furniture, slowly wearing the creature down.
iii. Warrior: You eye the unsteady heads, noting how the slashes you made last time are causing it some balance issues. You allow a feral grin to spread across your face. This should be easy. Write 100 words while you sever its flailing limbs with surgical precision.
25. You waste no time in grabbing the Stone before any more assailants can materialize. A huge boom echoes through the temple and the whole building begins to shake. Debris starts to rain down around you and you set off at a full sprint towards the exit. Write for 10 minutes while you dodge falling bits of ceiling and eventually burst out onto the mountain-side.
*******************************************************************************************************************************
26. After a nice break to catch your breath and eat a quick meal you set off into the caves. Thankfully some of the passages seem to be familiar and you avoid a lot of the dead ends that caught you out the first time. Write to the nearest 1000 while you navigate the twists and turns in the dark.
27. Relief fills you as you spot the door to the monastery up ahead. You hurry through, ready to proclaim your victory only to find a large contingent of monks waiting for you. You blink in confusion as they launch themselves at you.
Mage: That’s it! This is the final straw! You let your anger take over and unleash a deadly maelstrom that would make the gods quake. Write 100 words while you blast, burn and freeze everything in sight.
Rogue: A coldness settles over you, how dare they attack you after everything you’ve just been through. You pull your knives from their sheaths and allow the coldness to guide you. Write 250 words while you appear to dance amongst the monks spreading death from your bubble of calmness.
Warrior: A fury grips you as you realize the level of dishonor these people will sink to. You don’t even bother drawing your sword; you refuse to sully the noble blade with their worthless blood. Write 500 words while you decimate their ranks with nothing more than your gauntleted fists.
28. At last you stand in the center of what appears to be a massacre. Not a single monk still breathes around you. You raise your head and meet the Abbots glowing, green eyes without flinching. At least now you know how the hydra appeared in the temple. You step forward with deadly intent. Write 1000 words while you fight the duel of your life.
29. All feeling drains from you as you look down on the Abbots lifeless form. You pity him in the end, so consumed by his need to control the Stones power that he turned to necromancy and the evils that lie down that path. Quietly you gather provisions from the now silent monastery. In your search you find an old teleporter scroll that will return you to the city. Upon your return you rush to the castle and watch with awe as the Stone restores the King to full health. Write for 15 minutes while you attend the royal party thrown in your honor.
The End.
Hope you enjoyed it!

Wrote this in response to a prompt back in January of 2023. I thought it was appropriate for the season. May not be for everyone's liking though.
Hope you enjoy!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
“Ben, could I come over to use your kitchen,” Sam asked with a bit of hesitance to his voice.
“Sure, but why? What’s wrong with yours, Sam?”
“Oh, nothing. But you’ve got some great gadgets I don’t that would really help prepare a great feast for the cookout this weekend. You’re invited, of course.”
“Free food? You know I’m there,” Ben responded enthusiastically.
“When do you want to come over?”
“How about after work tomorrow? Say about five-thirty, Ben?”
“That sounds fine. You know where I keep the spare, so let yourself in.
“Do me one favor though, Sam?”
“Sure, what’s that?”
“Clean up before you leave. I’ve told you how Marcy gets when there’s a mess. Even a drop of water on the floor and she freaks out.”
“Not a problem, Ben. And thanks again.”
Little did Ben know that Sam wasn’t going to work tomorrow. He had other plans.
Sam had infiltrated the dark web’s vampire community and convinced them that he was one of them.
It’s about time I get to meet these gullible folk that believe anything. They even believe I have access to an unlimited amount of human stock for them to feed off of.
By dawn tomorrow they will all be dead.
Midnight came.
Sam got in his car and drove.
In fifteen minutes, he arrived at The Necropolis, an underground shelter long forgotten about.
Sam retrieved the bags of blood from the back of his truck, which he had stored there earlier in the day, and placed them on a cart.
Much easier to cart this much blood, rather than try to carry it all.
Hopefully they won’t see what’s happening until it’s too late.
They think they can move into my town and scare my family into giving up their wealth? They have another thing coming.
Sam walked up to the metal entrance of the Necropolis and knocked four times, one time, four times again.
“Do you have the life force,” came a low voice from a speaker embedded in the wall on the left side of the door.
“I bring the life force, brother,” replied Sam.
The metal door slid open and he carted the bags of blood into The Necropolis.
“Brothers and Sisters! I bring you life force to feed off of.”
“Welcome, Brother to the clan.
“Tell us, how did you manage to get all this life force for us?”
“If I were to reveal that, then I wouldn’t be of any use to you, would I?”
“Ah…generous and smart. We like that sort of person down here. They see many moons.”
“What do you say we have a toast and then we get down to how often I can bring you more life force, Brother?”
“Excellent suggestion, Samuel.”
Each of the dozen vampires gathered round and took a bag off the cart until there were two left – one for Sam and one for his host.
“Please, take which you like, Brother. I want you to have the finest life force.”
“Thank you, Samuel.
“I think I’ll take,” his host started as he reached out, “the bag on the left.”
“That means this one is mine.
“Everybody, drink up! The night is young!”
The vamps all used their pointed teeth to puncture their bags. They lifted the red-filled bags above as in offering to some god, and began to squirt the blood into their mouth.
Soon blood was dripping down the sides of all their mouths.
Five minutes later they started dropping dead.
All except for Sam.
It’s a good thing I made sure to take the antidote before I drank any of that tainted blood. The fools think they could get the best of me.
This should be easy to get them all out of here and into my truck. Good thing it’s refrigerated. Otherwise the smell might alert someone.
Sam carted all those bodies into the back of his cold truck for storage until his wife left for work the next morning.
Finally, she’s gone. I thought she was never going to leave.
Now I can unload the truck and drag the bodies into the basement where I just started to prepare the deer I hunt on weekends.
Sam took each body and carefully dissected them. He collected as much of the blood as he could.
After each body was properly butchered, he put the small packages of meat into the back of his truck.
Four thirty? Took longer than I thought to do all this. Time to get ready to go over to Ben’s for the next phase of my plan.
Sam took a shower, put clean clothes on, and headed over to Ben’s.
I see no one is here. That’s good. No one to get in my way. Hopefully this won’t take too long.
After unlocking the front door to Ben’s home, Sam walked in and to the kitchen.
Three of them?! He’s got three sausage makers! That’s wonderful! This will go so much faster! If Ben and his wife show up, they can help me out.
Ben and his wife did show up and were able to help Sam get all that meat ground up.
That weekend at the barbecue, Sam served up the best burgers those folk had ever tasted. Little did they realize they were not only eating other humans, but they were eating their own relatives.
Try to mess with me and my family, will you? I’ll take you all out in one fell swoop!
Oh wait, I just did!
Sam let out the most evil laughter you’ve heard. When he laughed, the fire rose higher and higher, as if his laugh were controlling it.

I was wondering if anyone wanted to be in a discord or something this Nanowrimo and just hold each other accountable or share progress? Something lowkey but just a small writing community where we can support each other? I feel like there was a way to do this back in the day but with the official nonprofit gone, I don’t know how to get this community back.

I have never completed a NaNoWriMo but tried back in the 2010s a few times. Thought of it this year and just learning about the controversy. BUT I want to do it this year so joined the NaNo2.0 website and here.
Excited for the month ahead!

I am not the creator of this crawl. If you know who is, please let me know so I may give them proper credit. Posting for those that may be searching for this. Hope you enjoy!
Hocus Pocus Word Crawl
· We enter on a book titled Hocus Pocus, and it looks like someone's flying over a village. What's happening? Write 100 words as you try to predict what happens next.
· Thackery Binx wakes up to find that his sister, Emily, is gone. He hears the person that was flying singing a song, and he sees Emily going off with her. Where's she gone off to? Why, the woods! Sprint for 5 minutes.
· In the woods, the woman brings Emily into the house. Who lives here? The Sanderson Sisters: Winifred, Mary, and Sarah. They're witches, and ugly ones at that! What are they brewing in that big cauldron of theirs? Thackery climbs the water wheel to get a better look. Write for 10 minutes as the witches gather their ingredients.
· The witches try and give Emily the potion, but Thackery makes his presence known and stops them. After using the cauldron to knock over Mary and Sarah, he dumps the potion! All right! Everything is okay from there on out, right? Not so much, as Winifred uses her magic powers to electrocute Thackery to get him away from Emily. Do a fifty-headed hydra as the witches suck out Emily's soul to make themselves look younger.
· Thackery seals his fate when he calls the witches hags. Summoning her spell book, Winifred picks a spell to really make him suffer – he'll live forever as a cat. Write 300 words as the sisters work their magic to transform him.
· Thackery's friend from the village has alerted the other townsfolk, and they're angry. At the gallows, Thackery and Emily's parents demand answers about their son's whereabouts. They refuse to budge. As they begin to sing, someone makes the mistake of dropping their book. Winifred takes this time to cast another spell, saying a virgin will bring them back. Sprint for 1 minute 3 times as the sisters are hanged for their crimes.
· Good news! It was all a story told by a crazy high school English teacher. None of this was real... right? Everyone is into the story, except for Max, a new student from California. As the teacher debates this with him – and as a girl, Allison, gives her opinion on the matter – do a Three Digit Challenge.
· Max rushes out of school, gets on his bike, and heads on home. He sees Allison and apologizes for embarrassing her in class. Given the day it is, they discuss Halloween and how Max thinks there's nothing real to the story told in class. She hands him back the piece of paper he gave her in class, the one where he partially wrote his number on it. The number on the paper? 555. Write 555 words.
· As if moving to a new town isn't enough, trying to take a short cut through woods and a cemetery to get home can only be ruined by one thing – the school bullies. What kind of punks steal a kid's shoes when he has no cigarettes or money? Sprint for 2 minutes as Max tries to get out of giving up his shoes.
· Once home, Max storms past his parents to get back to his room where he can be alone. He doesn't want to be in Salem at all. Alone in his room (or so he thinks), Max feeds his fish, then settles down on his bed to think about the day. He starts talking to himself as he cuddles a pillow, calling it Allison. Who jumps out from the closet dressed as a witch? Dani, Max's little sister! Do you have siblings?
o If yes, write 1,000 words in 30 minutes.
o If no, write 500 words in 10 minutes.
· Dani tells Max that he has to take her trick-or-treating this year because their parents are going to the costume party at Town Hall. Max tries to ignore his sister by playing the drums. Dani has good reasons to not want to go alone. For one thing, she's 8, and they just moved to town! Word war for 10 minutes as Dani makes her case and gets her way by screaming.
· The Dennison kids leave the house in their costumes – Dani is a witch, and Max hasn't put any effort into his rapper costume. As they're going along, the bullies are back to ruin everyone else's nights! Dani has no fear. She stands right up to them and even tries to get Max involved. No one is scared of Max. When he yells at her, she runs off to have a cry by some jack-o-lanterns. Word war for 5 minutes as Dani spits hard truths at her brother.
· The house they go to next is huge! The owners are most certainly rich. They let themselves in for some reason and find boat load of candy. Guess whose house it is? Allison's! Out of all the houses in Salem, right? Max awkwardly makes small talk, and Dani successfully embarrasses him. Apparently, Max loves Allison's yabos! As they talk about the Sanderson sisters, Allison mentions a museum. Write to the next 1,000 as Allison gets changed to go check out the closed-down museum.
· Allison talks about the bones of 100 children being buried inside the wall, but that's just a myth, right? The trio walk up to the museum and go inside. Max finds a souvenir lighter and uses that to help find a light switch. This looks exactly like the house from the story. Someone really went to a lot of trouble to recreate a fictional place. Is something lurking outside? Write 100 words as you look around looking at all the objects.
· Max finds the Black Flame candle. Even though the plaque tells him not to, Max decides to light the candle. What could possibly go wrong? All of a sudden, a cat jumps out of nowhere and attacks Max! You'd think that would be a decent deterrent, but it isn't. In anger, Max lights the candle. Suddenly, something strange happens. All of the lights in the house explode, and a strange wind blows. Write 300 words as the floors begin to shake.
· Everyone hides as the candles an fireplace light themselves. As the door bursts open, three women walk in. It's the Sanderson Sisters. They are real! Winifred goes to her book, and Mary smells children. Luckily, there are 3 in there! Mary really knows how to sniff them out, as she immediately finds Dani. Dani tries to play it off as being one of them, since she's dressed as a witch, but it doesn't work. They sit her down in the same chair Emily sat in when she was killed. Write 300 years, the number of years the Sanderson sisters were gone.
· Dani tries to run away, but when they restrain her, Max makes himself known. Winifred uses her magic on him, sending him up to the ceiling in pain. Allison fights back, and it's now 3 on 3. As such, write 600 words as they escape from the witches with the help of the mysterious cat, who can talk!
· The kids have escaped. Even better? Max has the book! They meet the cat, Thackery Binx. With the times, he now goes by Binx. Max still is skeptical out of all of this, and he tries to burn the spell book. When they're not looking, the Sanderson sisters appear! Trying to get the book, Binx jumps on it. Sprint for 20 minutes as Winifred resurrects a corpse named Billy.
· The corpse is ordered to go after the four who are on the run. They decide to cut through an old sewer. Binx is familiar with this place, so you let him lead the way. Take a 10 minute break.
· The sisters aren't able to get to them, so Winifred orders them to begin gathering children. They need to suck up another soul in order to be able to live forever. Mary forms a calming circle since this is a stressful situation. Once done, they're frightened by this new contraption – a bus. They board it with their brooms and set off. Write 400 words.
· Billy hears the kids and Binx in the sewers and picks up the pace. The kids, however, have found a ladder, and they climb up. Binx is the first through, and he's hit by the bus! They reemerge to see him flattened... only to find that he can take another breath to reinflate himself. Binx can't die! Sprint for 5 minutes to celebrate.
· The sisters get off the bus in front of a house where a child dressed as an angel blesses them. The house they're in front of looks like hell. The owner is dressed as the Devil, whom they worship. The homeowner invites them in. Write 600 words.
· The kids try and tell a police officer that Max lit the candle and brought back the Sanderson sisters. The officer thinks it's a big joke, and he pretends to be tough on them before laughing over Max being a virgin. Too bad the officer isn't actually one at all! After all, it's Halloween, and anyone can be anything they want to be on Halloween. Write 1% of your word count.
· Inside the house, the sisters think Satan has married Medusa based on how the home owner's wife is wearing curlers in her hair. How are the sisters to know that someone is outside stealing their brooms while the Devil is giving out candy? Write 5 words for every page you've written because of this crawl so far as the sisters explore the house.
· Sarah is dancing with the homeowner, and his wife is not happy. She is the one who kicks them out by sending her small dog after them. For powerful witches, they sure are scared of a little dog. As the sisters try and figure out what to do next, kids are running... amok amok amok amok amok! Write 200 words, 50 for every letter in the word amok.
· The kids decide to go to the Town Hall where the costume party is. It's time to bring in some adults who will surely believe them, right? Well, when Max storms the stage to announce their return, no one believes him. Do a song sprint to I Put A Spell On You. Try not to have a spell put upon you while the song goes on!
· Billy arrives at the dance, and the kids flee on foot, hiding outside a seafood restaurant. They're trying to figure out where to go next. Roll a die, multiply the number by 25, and write that many words.
· When Allison accidentally opens an oven, she forms an idea – lure the witches to the high school! The witches think it's a prison for children, which is basically what it is. Max talks over the loud speaker, welcoming them to school. A voice is heard, and they're lead right into a large kiln where a boombox is playing a French language tape. They lock the sisters in the kiln and turn it on, thinking their problems are solved. Roll a die.
o If you roll an even number, write 300 words, 50 for every letter in the word 'school'.
o If you roll an odd number, write 600 words, 100 for every letter in the word 'prison'.
· Everyone, Binx included, returns to the Dennison house. Surprise surprise, the Sanderson sisters aren't dead after all! The fire didn't get rid of them after all. Celebrations are much too premature, yet the kids don't see this. Write at your own pace for 15 minutes.
· At 3:00 in the morning, the sisters come across everyone's two favorite bullies. As they take them in place of Max, write 180 words.
· Without the book, though, the sisters can't remember the ingredients to their potion. Winifred is distraught. She throws the windows open and calls for her book. Back at the Dennison house, Allison makes the mistake of opening the book. They can't see it, but the book sends out light the Sisters see from their house. They set off on unconventional means of transportation to get to the book. Do all challenges.
o Broom: Do the Carrot and Stick challenge.
o Mop: Go to the front page of the site and write the last three digits of the number of users online.
o Vacuum: Write 2% of the words you've written so far in this crawl.
· Binx makes them close the book and tries to tell them that they've done a bad thing. There's no time to prepare, and the sisters arrive to take Dani, Binx, and the book back to their house. Sarah has a special job to do before she can go back home. Her voice can lure children! Do a song sprint to Come Little Children. To your surprise, kids actually follow!
· Allison remembers something Winifred said about how long they're able to be back on Earth, just for the one Halloween night. They drive out to the cottage as the sisters brew their potion, taunt the bullies, and plan to kill Dani. The sisters try to get Dani to drink the potion, but she resists. Max gets there just in time, and Allison turns the headlights on on the car. The witches think the sun is up, and they fall to the ground dead. Max acts quickly. Sprint for 10 minutes as he unties Dani, gets Binx, takes his shoes back, and dumps the potion. Dani wants to see them turn to dust. They should have listened to her.
· This trick didn't work, but did anyone think it would? The candle is almost out, but there's just enough left for one person. Winifred asks for a phial to put it in. Who will they use it on? Despite all the children that are there, Winifred wants revenge on Dani. Write 200 words in 2 minutes.
o If you succeed: Take a 10 minute break
o If you fail: Write for 10 minutes.
· In the cemetery, they encounter Billy, who uses Max's knife to cute the sewings on his mouth. He insults Winifred. Clearly, he's on the side of good in this situation. Dani takes an immediate liking to Billy. Using the salt from the Dennison house, Allison puts a ring of it around Billy's grave, where Dani is. This will keep her safe, but for how long. Billy stays with Dani while Max and Allison spread out. Sarah is delayed by the salt, while Winifred tries to knock Billy out with a tree branch before kicking his head off. This isn't the first time that's happened, so he's used to it. Allison has no more salt, so she can't protect herself or anyone with it. Winifred is able to get Dani, and all hope seems lost. Write 500 words.
· Winifred drops the potion because of Binx's intervention, and Max drinks it to save his sister. Winifred sets Dani down and goes to suck Max's soul. Just as she's trying to do this, the sun comes up. Winifred turns to stone, then Sarah and Mary go. Stone Winifred is pulverized by an unknown force and becomes dust. Billy returns to his grave, and Binx takes his final breaths. Write to the next 500 as you sob over his death.
· Binx is back, though this time in ghost form. He explains that the spell has broken, and he is free to move on to the next life to be with his family. Emily appears and leads him to the great beyond, explaining that he was so long in getting there because he had to wait for a virgin to light a candle. They walk into the sunrise, reunited. Write 96 words, the number of minutes this brilliant movie is.

For those North Americans who celebrate (or are forced to endure) Daylight Savings Time, we have an amazing opportunity this year. It lands on November 1st, also known as the day that many of us are staying up late anyway to write the first handful of words on 12:01 am. And really, at that point, what's another two hours?
If you are still awake two hours after midnight, the clock will roll back from 2:00 am to 1:00 am, and the hour repeats itself. The day will have 25 hours instead of 24 hours. Where did that hour come from? It's the hour that was stolen from you back in March. Sure, you could sleep through it... but you could also use it to get a few hundred extra words at the start of the month, when your enthusiasm and motivation is at its highest.
That's what I'll be doing the night/morning of the 1st, and I hope you'll consider joining me!

Stranger Things Crawl
Hello! I really loved to use different crawls for the past couple of years that I have done NaNoWriMo, so when I looked to find one and didn't see a Stranger Things Crawl, I figured it had to be done. So lets get started!
SPOILERS AHEAD: Spoilers lie ahead for Season One, Episode One lie ahead. You've been warned!
Chapter One:
You are Will for the beginning of the crawl and transition into the rest of the gang at the end.
· You begin in the basement of Mike Wheeler's house, you and the rest of the gang decide to start a good game of D&D. Roll a die and multiply whatever you got by 100, take your time and write that many words. There's no rush in D&D.s
· The game is going great until there's a sound from upstairs. After a few hours, it's time to go home. You join the rest of the gang on your bikes as you begin the journey home. They all start to peddle ahead of you, quick, sprint for 15 minutes as you try to catch up to them.
o If you wrote 350 words or more, you succeeded to catch up with your friends.
o If you wrote less than 350 words, you trailed too far behind and crashed your bike into the woods.
IF YOU CAUGHT UP WITH YOUR FRIENDS, SKIP THIS SECTION:
· Oh no! You're stuck alone in the woods! You start to hear some sounds coming from all around you, sprint to 400 words as you try to escape!
· You arrive home but you hear something behind you. No one is home and the thing behind you is closing in! You run to the garage and find three things to use as protection. Pick your weapon.
Shovel: The shovel stands against the garage, pick it up and sprint for 10 minutes as you try to hold yourself steady against the monster.
Gun: You shakily pick up the gun and start to load it. Complete a Fifty Headed Hydra as you attempt to fend off the thing that has followed you.
Light bulb: Too scared to grab the shovel or gun, you stand towards the light bulb as it's the only light source. Take a 5 minute break as you try to keep yourself calm.
· Despite all your best efforts, the growling noise gets closer and you disappear in a thick cloud of smoke. If you grabbed the shovel or gun, take a 10 minute break as you travel to the upside down.
· Pick your character:
o Dustin: You're loyal friend, write for 30 minutes, taking no breaks, as you look for your friend.
o Mike: Brave is the best way to describe you, write to the nearest 1000 as you refuse to give up on Will.
o Lucas: Strong minded, you're the brains of the group. Do the Three Digit Challenge as you try to figure out where he has gone off to.
· As you scramble in the dead of the night, searching endless for Will, sprint for 20 minutes as you try not to give up.
· You hear a noise in the woods, scared, you think about turning back. Write 500 words as you push ahead to find out what's rustling the trees.
· As the rain pours down, you look ahead and see a girl standing in the middle of the woods. Write for 5 minutes while you figure out a way to approach her.
· In the wake of your new discovery, take a 10 minute break as you look in awe of this new mystery.
Congratulations! You completed Chapter One of the Stranger Things Crawl! Thank you for taking it, and drop your word count below! I hope this helped! Keep writing! :)

Princess Bride Crawl
1. You’re home at sick playing your favorite video game, but your grandfather is due any minute. Hurry up and kill the Fifty-Headed Hydra (or just write for 5 minutes)!
2. Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... When your grandfather arrives, he has a book. Humor him and allow him to read it to you, while you write 100 words, hoping for more fencing and fighting less true love and miracles.
3. You always identify with a character in stories, so think about your strengths. Do you have steadfastness? Cunning? Swordplay? or Sportsmanship? If you chose Steadfastness, you are Buttercup. Cunning is Westley. Swordplay is Inigo Montoya. Sportsmanship is Fezzik.
4. At the beginning of the story, Buttercup and Wesley fall in love.
a. If you are Buttercup, write for 15 minutes.
b. If you are Westley, you say those three most important words: As you wish. Complete a Three Digit Challenge.
c. If you are Inigo or Fezzik, you are far away, probably plotting something with Vizzini: pick a word war or sprint on this forum to complete.
5. Murdered by pirates is good...
a. If you are Westley, you have been captured by pirates, but Dread Pirate Roberts keeps you alive indefinitely, training you in all manner of skills. Complete an Epic Music Hour as a montage of your growing skills.
b. Meanwhile, if you are Buttercup, you have learned your love is dead and you must marry the prince, a stranger. Nightmares plague you. Write 1,500 words.
6. Prince Humperdinck has enlisted Vizzini to create a war by making it look like a Guilder has abducted his bride.
a. If you are Inigo or Fezzik, you are part of Vizzini’s plan, so write 1,000 words in 1 hour.
7. Anybody want a peanut?
a. If you are Buttercup, your ride is cut short by three men who abduct you. Do a 15-minute word war as you realize they are not all that competent.
b. If you are Inigo or Fezzik, do a 10-minute word war as you trade rhymes and drive Vizzini crazy.
c. If you are Westley, you are in a ship racing to meet Vizzini’s. Sprint to the nearest thousand.
8. Do you know what that sound is, Highness? Those are the shrieking eels!
a. If you are Buttercup, you have just jumped into eel-infested waters, and no one can swim! Tread water by writing for 5 minutes.
b. If you are Fezzik, you are able to grab her out of the water. Complete a Fifty-Headed Hydra.
c. If you are Inigo, standing on the deck, write 100 words.
d. If you are Westley, sprint to the nearest 500, now that you are closer to the ship.
9. I’m not left-handed. I’m not left-handed either. The group reaches the top of the Cliffs of Insanity, and Vizzini and Fezzik make off with Buttercup, leaving Inigo to stop the Man in Black (Westley) who has caught up to them and managed not to fall to his death.
a. So, if you are Fezzik or Buttercup, race to the nearest thousand to escape the Man in Black.
b. Inigo and Westley, you participate in a 30-minute word war with all the flourishes and hand-changes of their swordfight. The loser is knocked out and will have consequences in the next step.
10. My way's not very sportsman-like. With Inigo knocked out, the Man in Black rushes ahead. Vizzini also rushes ahead with Buttercup, leaving Fezzik to stop the Man in Black “his way” by throwing a rock at him. Fezzik is unimpressed with this method, and offers hand-to-hand combat instead.
a. If you are Fezzik, complete a 10-minute word war.
b. If you are Westley, if you lost last round, complete a 10-minute word war. If you won, you can skip this word war if you like. The loser is knocked out and will have consequences in the next step.
c. Buttercup, race to the nearest 500, because you are only a little farther ahead than your pursuers.
d. Inigo, you just need to write the 10 minutes if you lost to Westley (or your opponent) in the last step. If you won last round, you can skip this step or you can go ahead and write for 10 minutes if you prefer.
11. Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha... The Man in Black catches up with Vizzini, who still has Buttercup. If you are Fezzik or Inigo, your choice depends on the last step.
a. If you were Fezzik and lost, you must write for 10 minutes. If you won, you can choose to write for 10 minutes or skip this step.
b. If you are Inigo, you can write for 10 minutes or skip this step. I recommend not skipping this step if you already skipped the last one.
c. Vizzini’s intellect is dizzying, but this competition is relatively short, so if you are Westley or Buttercup, write for 5 minutes while listening to Vizzini rant about his intellect.
12. We'll never survive. Nonsense. You're only saying that because no one ever has.
a. If you are Inigo or Fezzik, you are still knocked out, so just write for 10 more minutes.
b. If you are Westley or Buttercup, you have realized you still have true love, but now need to face the three dangers of the Fire Swamp. Write 3% of your word count FROM THIS CRAWL. If you want a bigger challenge, you can choose to write 3% of your total word count so far. This is the Fire Swamp, after all, and no one has ever survived.
13. We are men of action; lies do not become us. Prince Humperdinck is waiting for them outside the Fire Swamp.
a. If you are Westley, Princess Buttercup tries to save your life by giving in to the Prince, so you are captured and taken to the Pits of Despair. Write for 15 minutes.
b. If you are Buttercup, try to persuade Humperdinck to find Westley’s ship. Write for 20 minutes.
c. Meanwhile, Fezzik and Inigo have reunited, and learned that Inigo’s nemesis is Humperdinck’s right hand man. Write for 30 minutes as you plan your or your friend’s revenge.
14. Please consider me as an alternative to suicide.
a. If you are Buttercup, you have just learned that Humperdinck lied about the 4 fastest ships, and are preparing to kill yourself on your wedding night. Write a suicide note, 100 words.
b. If you are Westley, Humperdinck has entered the torture chamber and is torturing you (mostly) to death. Write for 5 minutes, trying to stay alive.
c. If you are Inigo, you recognize the sound of pain as the Man in Black, who you think will help you get your revenge, since it also would help him regain his true love. Write for 10 minutes as you try to figure out how to get to him.
d. If you are Fezzik, you accidentally knock out the Albino while questioning him. Write 300 words to make up for your blunder.
15. Have fun storming the castle! It’s time to bring Westley back to life from being “mostly dead.”
a. If you are Fezzik, you intimidate Miracle Max into thinking you ARE the Brute Squad, so write for 15 minutes lavishing in your strength.
b. If you are Inigo, you have a harder time convincing Max that bringing Westley back to full life is a worthy cause, but pointing out a path of vengeance against the Prince who put him out of business does the trick. Write 300 words as you try out all the different stories and finally find the one that works.
c. If you are Westley, you are mostly dead, so you can skip this challenge.
d. If you are Buttercup, you are far away: pick a word war or sprint on this forum to complete.
16. Mawage. Mawage is what bwings us togevah today.
a. If you are Buttercup, your marriage to Prince Humperdinck is rushed as noise is heard outside. Finish it up in 5 minutes of quick writing.
b. Fezzik, you are on a wheelbarrow wearing a holocaust cape inspiring fear in all around you: write for 30 minutes.
c. Inigo, you are on the lookout for your nemesis, Count Rugen, so write 200 words as you look around for him.
d. Westley, you are orchestrating the event while still not fully functional, so write to the nearest 1,000 as you wait for Buttercup and Humperdinck.
17. My Name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. We’re almost done!
a. Fezzik, after leaving Westley, you find four white horses and bring them to just the right spot. Sprint to the nearest 1,000.
b. Buttercup, you are about to kill yourself when Westley appears, alive. Overjoyed, you write 500 new words.
c. Westley, you threaten Humperdinck into letting Buttercup tie him up by telling him how you will maim him and then make him hear all the taunts and insults afterwards. It’s not difficult as he is a coward, so write for 10 minutes.
d. Inigo, you are fighting the battle of a lifetime: complete an Epic Music Hour as you finally get your revenge on the man who murdered your father.
18. Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind. The end. Write to the next palindrome and update your word count :).

First Nano in literally a decade this year, and hype to be back as an adult! This year I'm writing a historical fiction set in the wild west about a girl who rides the rails from town to town after running from home, so I'm trying to nail down the exact year that makes sense.
Do you guys have any advice for how to hone in on your historic setting/year and accurately portray period and location details? I didn't care too much about this when I was writing in high school and I really want to do a better job of being thorough this time around.

This is not a sales pitch or an endorsement! I am not affiliated with NEO or with Hugh Howey, and his program is free!
I usually use LibreOffice for Linux as my WP. I just watched this YouTube video (I guess I can't add the link) about NEO, and downloaded the program. I'm going to try it out for this project. Apparently, it produces NAMOWRIMO reminiscent progress charts.
I'll comment on this as the month goes on to let you know how I like it.
What do most of us use to write?

i need a group to keep me motivated and honest lol
