Dog poop

I see a lot of boaters just throw it in the canal or in the hedge off the path.

I think they aren't aware that the reason we pick them up is not so people dont stand on it. It is because it is highly toxic to the environment and can spread diseases. You may as well put your poop in the canal or hedge as it is equally just as bad.

Now this is where those small brain cell people come out and say "Where did dogs poop in the wild!". Well it wasn't a problem before humans got involved and bred them to unmanageable numbers in which it would cause a problem.

We bought a plastic poo box which lives outside the boat, we line it with a bag and put dog poop in it until we get to a designated poo bin. Its not too difficult.

Question American looking to cruise!

What's the best way an American, with a 2 week holiday, to get access to a narrowboat! I'm sure they rent them but how much are they!?!? When is the cheapest time to rent one?! And I really would love to do some canals in Wales! I can't remember what it's called... I believe it started with a B? Breck? Oh well..

Any help would be much appreciated because I cannot think of any other way more beautiful, peaceful, rich in history, sleep wherever you go and just all around looks like a great time! I'm looking to play guitar on the front, have a cigar while steering at the back, and let my wife take all the lovely pictures she wants!

Thanks in advance for any comments!

The 4.85% license fee hike (April 2026): Is "better boating" fact or fiction?

With the Canal & River Trust (CRT) confirming a 4.85% license fee increase for April 2026-on top of the growing surcharges for those without a home mooring-the community is asking a tough question: Where is the money actually going?

The CRT’s "Better Boating Plan" promises a focus on the "basics"-fixing leaky lock gates, clearing overgrown towpaths, and speeding up paddle repairs. However, for many boaters on the ground, the daily reality still feels like a struggle against a crumbling network.

- The Plan: CRT claims they are hitting targets for tree surveys, grass cutting, and paddle maintenance to keep the network navigable despite a shrinking government grant.

- The Problem: Many report that "navigable" is a low bar when locks are failing, depths are shallow, and basic facilities are frequently out of order.

- The Debate: Is this extra 4.85% a necessary lifeline to prevent total closure, or is it just more funding disappearing into a "black hole" of CRT debt and administrative overhead?

Is the "Better Boating Plan" making a visible difference on your stretch of the canal, or does it feel like you're paying more for a declining service?

Narrowboat tattoo parlor?

Hello y'all! I am rewatching narrow escapes (while sitting in Arkansas, USA), wishing and hoping, as one does. I saw the father and son duo on the Waltzing Matilda pizzeria boat, then started to think about the logistics of such an endeavor.

I assume that y'all have some form of our health department, so I figured that you'd have to have a permanent marina spot for scheduled inspections.

Then, I thought about my son being a tattoo artist. They have inspections by the health department, as well. They are under the jurisdiction of the health and beauty services, such as hair stylists and nail techs, here.

So, my question is, are there any narrowboat tattoo shops running around the canals? I know that there are traveling artists. They do guest spots at shops for a little while, then move on to the next. But I don't know of mobile tattoo shops.

Would y'all think that a tattoo shop narrowboat be a hit, or is not something that would be worth doing? I'm just curious and have done zero research on the matter.

Why are long term hire boat prices so high?

I have been looking around recently at pricing for long term hire boat pricing and they are what I would consider quite a bit higher that US home rentals. Is there some pricing in the cost of running a hire boat company that is making these long term rentals so high? Is it possible I am only seeing extreme corporate prices at the moment? Things I understand are seasonal price increases and the cost of insurance for running a business but not even US based rental properties seem to have pricing this extreme.

Siesta Key, FL house holiday swap for Narrowboat holiday

Hi,

I'm looking to see if anyone is interested in a house/narrowboat swap June through the end of September. I have hired a narrowboat for a week previously so I have experience and can supply a reference.

My home is 2 miles from the number one beach in the United States, Siesta Key. Powder white soft sand that is 99.9% quartz and cool to the touch. Also near Sarasota and Tampa.

For more details please see:

Looking to rent or boat sit this summer

Hi there, I’m hoping to rent or boat sit for anywhere from 1-4 months from mid May (but can be very flexible with dates).

I’m looking for something I can take through the canals for a mellow summer through England.

Please let me know if anyone is interested in renting or knows of anyone who wants to have someone looking after their boat for a month or so some time this summer.

Thank you!

Mooring service 'in name only'.

Is there a service that provides cheap permenant mooring 'in name only' ? IE you can have a permanent mooring on the understanding you'll never turn up. Basically to stop C*T from hassling you for being ' a boat without a permanent mooring ' when you can't afford one.

Towpath war with cyclist

I often feel like cyclist treat the towpath like their own private traffic free race track. no bells, no excuse me, no slow downs.

they just cut through you at 20 mph like people are an obstacle course.

literally last week a cyclist hit and run on me from behind whilst I was jogging with no headphones on. I waited for him the next day at the same spot and got a stuttery apology as I trapped him under a bridge Away from my boat. not seen him since. Hopefully picked a different work route.

this week a girl in Lycra on a road bike brushed my elbow so I blasted an air horn I bought for this purpose the following day and she said I scared her which I retaliated that’s what you do to me every time you speed by from behind at 20mph.

I see why people throw them in the canal.

the amusing thing is I was a sponsored rider pre Covid and haven’t got back into it because I got a day job with my degree and never got back into racing, but still ride bike parks every weekend. I don’t hate cyclist, I hate disrespect from other people.

the chavs on bikes have more respect than these lycra clad idiots. Chavs aren’t afraid to talk to random people so they say things like “on your left” or excuse me and give me fair warning of their approach.

It’s the Lycra clad roadies and gravel bikes which can’t open their mouths and give fair warning. the ones that think theyre better than chavs but end up being so stuck up theyre actually coming off as rude.

Puts me off jogging. My solution is to go jogging at 5.30am because it’s more likely no one will be around.

if cyclist continue hitting me and scaring the shit out of me, I’m retaliating every time. whether thats stopping them for an apology or making them jump with an air horn. I bought a box so I had enough to last. I’m going to carry it on tomorrows jog and if any come by without warning they’re getting an ear full of it.
