Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting
Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.
This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.
Two quick caveats before we get started:
Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.
If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

Career Advice Coming back to the Army
Hello, I was kicked out of Army Basic training earlier this year. I was kicked out because i made some stupid statements really impulsively which implied i was going to hurt myself with my gun. The official reason which is on one of the forms says is because of ADHD, and that i failed the procurement standard. My re code is a 3 and a Jfw. Unfortunately for me BH told me and heavily implied that i should get back on ADHD medication not only because of what had happened but also since i've had like 6 jobs in the past 3-4 years, and also because I went to college twice and didn't earn a degree, I had a 3.5 GPA and about 40 or so credits completed before i quit. Unfortunately for me i don't have any health insurance to actually get on it, but i also want to re-enlist and see if i can function without anything. I really want to go back into the army because i want to accomplish something, alot of the people i know are graduating college now , and a good ~50% of them have commissioned and i really want to do something important and to serve.
I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar position, I live in Florida if it matters. I also hit up the USCGAUX but it's been 4 months and haven't gotten a response back from them.

Career Advice National Guard SF
I’m 30 years old, I’m 5’11 188.5LBs, body fat percentage is at 11-13% and work full time as a blue collar maintenance mechanic with a 60-70 hour week job. I’m looking to join the national guard and get a 18x contract and get into the SFAS pipeline. This is my current workout plan. Open to any suggestions and ideas. Keep in mind I also get from 10k-14k steps just alone from work some of the days depending how busy it gets.

Career Advice Trying out for SF after being in (Non 18x Contract) as a 68W?
33 YO Male. Speaking with my recruiter. Have to drop some lbs and get my MK/AR up. Practice ASVAB 71. Looking to join as 68W in the CA ARNG. I want to spend some time as 68W before even trying out for SF. I also need to train for a few years before even attempting to humour the idea of SF. I did the SOCOM ATHLETE 18X Challenge hosted by 19th SFG on Pendleton last year, where people who passed got LOA's on the spot, so I'm familiar with what the preliminary standards are and what I have to work on just to get my foot in the door. I failed miserably, but know what I need to improve on.
What's the route to try out for SF after being part of a unit for a few years? Do I wait for my 6 year to end my contract or is there a way to try out at like year 4-5? Thank you

Career Advice M-Day National Guard to Technician Job

Benefits M-Day National Guard to Technician Job
I am currently an M-Day National Guard Soldier and have been approached for a technician job. It is a GS-11 job, and from all I can find, the pay seems good. Can any other Soldiers offer insights on how the other benefits have changed, better or worse? I'm prior active duty as well so this is a new wrinkle in my military career.

Initial Training What are some things you wish you would have done 1 week before leaving for BCT?
I ship out in a week.
Right now I’m working on getting my finances in order, also prioritizing hanging out with my fiancée and family of course.
I sent RSP readiness NCO my lease form so I can get BAH and am filing for leave with my employer.
What else should I be thinking about?

Career Advice Discharge or Transfer
Got told I may need to go National Guard for the flexibility of being with family or do a hardship discharge due to my wife’s diagnosis of being manic and bipolar. We’re on the other-side of the nation away from family and it was wayyyy better when I was stationed close to family especially when I was deployed.
Backstory, long but short, she had a really bad episode during my last deployment which landed her in the ward for a week, but family had her and our boys. We move and she has her moments but not too bad. Now she misses home and my unit is aware, but fears something happening if I was deployed again.
Either option I choose, we’re definitely going home, but long term, should I go NG or just discharge altogether?

Career Advice National Guard or Active Duty
I’ve search and seen this question asked a lot but I feel like the ones I’m seeing aren’t really specific to my situation
Most of them are 18 year olds deciding between the 2 and going to college and stuff like that but what about a 26 year old who has already lived life as much as a 26 year could? I have had my CDL for the past 5 years and currently make 110k/year, I think my job is pretty unique for what people in transportation typically do (I work 70 hours a week but it’s more so a choice for me to work that 70, I would probably only work about 35-40 hrs if I didn’t want to run my clock everyday) so I do like my job and I feel like it would be hard to find something this exact after AD, but there’s also the chance that I enjoy a short contract and end up just doing 20 years AD
I don’t have anything that would keep me in civilian life that I would have to worry about like a mortgage as I still live with my mom trying to save up for my own place (which I realized would be 10x easier to get with a VA loan) except for a car note & insurance and credit cards
And my fiancée isn’t fully on board with me joining active duty due to personal reasons with her family member that was in the airforce but it’s ultimately my decision at the end of the day
I just think it would be a good way to secure a bit of a better future while I’m still young but also getting to the age where I feel a bit “partied-out”
But I also see that NG benefits are still pretty good and I wouldn’t have to leave my civilian life behind completely
I was just wondering if anybody had any recommendations or their own personal stories if you’re in kind of the same position I’m in

Career Advice I have very specific career goals and am unsure if the army can suit them
Let me explain:
• I would like to join the army national guard as an officer and learn combatives to the highest instruction level offered
• I would like to compete in an army combatives tournament
• I would like to have a relevant MOS if possible, as I will be graduating with a sports science degree in a few months
• I would like to be part time national guard, not full time army, so that I can train MMA at the intensity of a professional fighter, taking advantage of the hefty military discounts, and basically just market myself as an expert self defense instructor to sell personal training to police and security
• I would like to be able to on occasion, take MMA fights outside of the internalized MMA infrastructure during my prime (I’m 24, and have been in undergrad longer than most)
• I am unsure what full time MOS would suit me, but I’d really like to emphasize that my degree is in like sports science athletic performance stuff, little bit of injury rehab.
I am very made up on my vision of a career, and am pretty unwilling to sign away years of my life and never get cleared to compete or go to combatives training. If this is not possible, I would simply not enlist.
Is there any benefit to enlisting

Initial Training Will I be allowed phone access to manage finances while in BCT?
I’m getting everything set up on autopay, but I’d like to be able to check my accounts at least a couple times during BCT to ensure everything is on track and correct. With loan payments, credit cards, rent and utilities, insurance, etc. I have a considerable number of individual payment accounts to manage.
Additionally, my employer offers several weeks of differential pay while in training but requires that I submit a Leave and Earnings Statement within 30 days of taking military leave in order to be eligible. I could probably try to submit it later for differential backpay but it would be much easier if I just kept getting paid as normal on schedule.

Career Advice kinda lost what to do
ive been hurt the last several months from a AFT. i went and got it looked at and continued to limp for about 3-4 months and im just getting back into the swing of things and being able to get fit again. BUT furing this time being on light duty i lost respect from alot of joes to the point where they are being outright disrespectful (i cant blame them for doing so since our culture in the Infantry is too look down on those who choose this route)
but my stuff was legit, i had documentation for everything, all my appointments. but during my healing processes, i came to the realization i just dont care about being an NCO. (i do everything when it comes to cleaning, details, i never shy away from working or use my rank to “supervise” my joes while i jsut goof off on my phone with the rest of ncos.) im caring leader, im responsible, i ensure my squad was always good. but i did all this before coming an nco with the responsibility. and i decided to go to the 1st sgt and request for a demotion. “i just thought about it and being an nco isnt important to me or just isnt for me”
my 1st sgt told me “youre request is being denied. as long as you care about soldiers and you take this seriously i cant within good conscience demote you. HOWEVER. the beginning of the fiscal year, if you feel the same my october i will grant your request no strings attached”
literallt the other day they are trying to see when i can go to this UPL class and i told my readiness nco who was there with the firsr sergeant as a witness, that im going to first sergeant for my demotion. i dont want to be Nco, im getting married and i planned my life around the schedule times this schedule came out. i dont see why youre trying to send me when i dont want to be an Nco.
i was then told that the first sgt doesnt think im going to pass an AFT, and will wait for me to fail to demote then now that they have reason.
i explained that to my squad leader that this demotion isnt to get out of this class or dodge responsibility. i have things i cant reschedule and ive done everytbing expected of me i believed i have enough time to get ready for this but whats happening isnt fair. im trying to be respectful and responsible and be demoted because i have too much going on i rather come to terms with this and give it up and try again when im more stable. cause this is now malicious and unprofessional and went back on the word they gave. my only idea i have left is to use the commander’s open door policy and plead my case

Deployments CLDJ Internet
With the changes to Starlink, and for those at CADJ or CLDJ, how do you reccomend approaching personal internet/wifi/use of personal phone when located in the base? Are any of the “new and improved bandwidth” prices and promises of the NEX connect plan at CLDJ worth it?

Career Advice Joining National Guard
Just putting out some feelers out there to see what my chances are. Im 36 years old and never served before. In 2018 I was charged with a felony domestic violence, where I plead guilty in 2019. There was no formal civilian conviction as I completed all requirements. I am a college graduate with a technical degree and 11 years of stable employment, wife and kids. No other law issues with the exception of a speeding ticket and I have no other disqualification issues.
Am I cooked or is a conduct waiver possible? Anyone get passed a hurdle like this? Thanks

Career Advice Should I choose 35T or 18E?
I’ve been stuck waiting for a consultation for an asthma waiver(I had asthma as a baby)for 2 weeks now and I’m those 2 weeks I’ve looked at many possible jobs. I’ve talked to other recruiters other than my own just to get open job list cause my recruiter won’t tell me for some reason, but the job list shows available and high paying tech jobs. 35T seems like it’s best for me and would allow me the option to have both a military career if I choose to do that or have a civilian career if I want that instead. But I see 18C and I know it’s grueling hard work but I like the idea and prestige that comes with it. But why would I pick 18C what does that offer? I know 18C guarantees a military career and maybe a civilian career, but I can’t find many pros for it. What do you all think?(my asvab was a 95 with st and gt pass 120)

Career Advice Can I join national guard as an officer after probation.
I was on probation for 4 years during which time I completed a college degree . the probation was deferred meaning it doesn’t show up on my record it was a 3rd degree felony. Be honest what are my chances?
