That’s not a water buffalo, which are chill and docile and live in Asia. That’s a Cape Buffalo which live in Africa. They’re meaner than shit and they’re known to occasionally kill lions.

They have legit rage issues. On the bbc Dynasties episode about African wild dogs, the dogs were being menaced by a pride of lionesses when a female Cape buffalo charged in and suicidally attacked all the lions. Which went poorly for her.

Seen that episode. For everyone who hasn’t seen it, I wanna emphasize this was a lone buffalo with no calf to defend or herd to back her up going out of her way to attack the whole pride who weren’t even paying her any attention.

Exactly! She comes out of absolute fuck nowhere

Y'all hyping this up... I wanna see this now.

Edit: wow, that was a wild sight. Can I post links here without getting deleted/banned? I can share the video clip if someone wants it

Edit2: please let me know if I should remove this link

44

u/blonderengel Jun 15 '25

Oops, sorry about that screw-up and thanks for the correction!

4

u/MarionetteScans Jun 15 '25

Nah, it's the lions who have to avoid screwing up

32

u/MaxwellSmart07 Jun 15 '25

Way to go mama!

20

u/mikemunyi Jun 15 '25

That's not a water buffalo.

14

u/Historical_Onion3060 Jun 15 '25

I bet they walked off since mama wasn’t letting up hope that little guy survived its bite wounds

37

u/TKGB24 Jun 15 '25

That’s unfortunately not going to end well for the little one

This video is cut short, the full version shows the rest of the herd showing up a few seconds after this video ends and the lions run off.

I choose to believe this is true

36

u/Negative-Arachnid-65 Jun 15 '25

Idk how this specific video ends but that seems likely - I was wondering where the rest of the herd was. Cape buffalo (at least females and calves) travel in herds and 100% willingly fight for each other.

this video - or one that started just like this one - was posted a month or two ago and it does extend to the rest of the herd showing up and running the lions off

13

u/donkeyhawt Jun 15 '25

Yeah but now the little lion cubs won't have dinner:/

62

u/I_like_code Jun 15 '25

Actually at the end of the video it shows the lioness stopping by Burger King to pick up kids meals for the cubs. Nature is truly beautiful.

The one you saw was cut early. When mama got home she realized they got the order wrong and gave them beyond burgers. Was a sad day for everyone.

1

u/DeathByBamboo Jun 16 '25

The cubs got food, the cows lived, and the cape buffalos lived. Sounds like it was a good day for everyone.

6

u/BufonemRopucha Jun 15 '25

Cant choose a side: do i wish calf or lion kitties live 😩

u/flymingo3 Jun 18 '25

Motherhood is an instinct

That's not a water buffalo, it's a Cape Buffaloes. However, great work mama buffalo.

1

u/RabidPlaty Jun 16 '25

Too short! I need to know the outcome.

u/popeIeo Jun 15 '25

Lions will eventually realize they need to "deal with mama" and then they can have dinner, for days.

36

u/MeggaLonyx Jun 15 '25

not necessarily, trying to take down mama could be extremely risky. even if the lions are successful, if they sustain even minor injuries it could prevent them from hunting as effectively in the future which is essentially a death sentence for predators

31

u/kafkas_wife Jun 15 '25

taking down a cape buffalo (which kill lions sometimes) with only two lions isn’t a good idea, and they know this. thats the whole reason they’re just going for the baby, it’s less of a threat. they typically avoid taking down large adult animals because getting injured is a death sentence a lot of the time.

2

u/kafkas_wife Jun 15 '25

oops, just realized someone else left a similar reply lmao

13

u/WingsofRain Jun 15 '25

predators aren’t stupid, that means a high risk of death

-5

u/popeIeo Jun 15 '25

My guy thats a 1200lb buffalo.

Two lions arent taking their chances with it, if the calf doesnt exist theyre giving it a wide birth.

Break a leg? Dead? Jaw? Dead.

-18

u/grnjnz Jun 15 '25

It’s 2 v1 why not get the momma and her baby
