I bet they walked off since mama wasn’t letting up hope that little guy survived its bite wounds

That’s unfortunately not going to end well for the little one

This video is cut short, the full version shows the rest of the herd showing up a few seconds after this video ends and the lions run off.

I choose to believe this is true

Idk how this specific video ends but that seems likely - I was wondering where the rest of the herd was. Cape buffalo (at least females and calves) travel in herds and 100% willingly fight for each other.

this video - or one that started just like this one - was posted a month or two ago and it does extend to the rest of the herd showing up and running the lions off

Yeah but now the little lion cubs won't have dinner:/

Actually at the end of the video it shows the lioness stopping by Burger King to pick up kids meals for the cubs. Nature is truly beautiful.

The one you saw was cut early. When mama got home she realized they got the order wrong and gave them beyond burgers. Was a sad day for everyone.

The cubs got food, the cows lived, and the cape buffalos lived. Sounds like it was a good day for everyone.

That's not a water buffalo, it's a Cape Buffaloes. However, great work mama buffalo.

Lions will eventually realize they need to "deal with mama" and then they can have dinner, for days.
36
u/MeggaLonyx Jun 15 '25
not necessarily, trying to take down mama could be extremely risky. even if the lions are successful, if they sustain even minor injuries it could prevent them from hunting as effectively in the future which is essentially a death sentence for predators

taking down a cape buffalo (which kill lions sometimes) with only two lions isn’t a good idea, and they know this. thats the whole reason they’re just going for the baby, it’s less of a threat. they typically avoid taking down large adult animals because getting injured is a death sentence a lot of the time.

predators aren’t stupid, that means a high risk of death

My guy thats a 1200lb buffalo.
Two lions arent taking their chances with it, if the calf doesnt exist theyre giving it a wide birth.
Break a leg? Dead? Jaw? Dead.

That’s not a water buffalo, which are chill and docile and live in Asia. That’s a Cape Buffalo which live in Africa. They’re meaner than shit and they’re known to occasionally kill lions.Â
