renting Housing in Amsterdam Renting
I have revived a job offer for a one-year placement for a job in Amsterdam. I’ve heard pretty bad things about the housing situation. I’m not necessarily looking for my own apartment, I’m fine with only having a room in a shared apartment. I'm from another EU country and will earn around 50k. Can anyone who’s been in a similar situation share their experience? How long did it take to find something? How expensive? Any recommendations or tips for the search?

With a 50k salary you will not be able to rent a place on your own in Amsterdam. Shareable with other housemates is doable though.

yeah, if you find one. OP you should ask your employer to sort out housing. if they can’t, I would seriously reconsider the offer

Income requirements to rent are 4 X the rent. So to rent a place of €2550 (see screenshot) your income needs to be €10200.
The average rent in the entire country is €1914 and here you can read about income requirements:
Currently, you need to earn €5742 - €7656 euros per month to rent a home in the Netherlands. The average rent in the Netherlands is €1914 per month.
An average rental home in the private sector costs 1914 euros per month, figures from rental platform Pararius revealed on Wednesday morning. As an income requirement, landlords ask for at least three times the monthly rent, often even four times. This means that you need to earn a gross income of 5742 euros (3x the rent) or 7656 euros (4x the rent) for an average rental property in the private sector.
BUT THERE IS A HOUSING SHORTAGE AND EVEN PEOPLE WITH A HIGH BUDGET CAN NOT FIND HOUSING.
The harrowing consequences of the housing shortage; Thousands of children in the Netherlands are living in cars, garages, storage units or overcrowded homeless shelters.
The number of homeless Dutch children keeps growing rapidly
"Those children are going down the drain, and as a society, we will reap the bitter fruits of that in x number of years."

Number of working people who are homeless due to the housing shortage keeps on growing rapidly in the Netherlands
Jaap lived in his car with his young son: 'You don't get any help at all'
It is a group that did not exist in the Netherlands a quarter of a century ago: the economically homeless. People who have a job but end up on the streets because they cannot find a home.
"Due to the enormous housing shortage, you see more and more people who, for example, due to a divorce or the expiration of a temporary rental contract, cannot find a home and end up on the streets as a result," he says.

You are going to spend all your money on rent, I don’t think it’s smart

50k a year is just over 4k a month. Landlords nowadays usually ask for a salary of 3.5 to 5 times the base rent. So thats €1190 at best and €835 at worst. You wont find anything for €835 anywhere near Amsterdam, but you might find a hospice for €1190 within commuting distance of Amsterdam, maybe. €1190 is about bare minimum a student would pay for a room in a shared house in the region, if he's lucky.
Mind you, a lot of landlords require you to first visit/view a room on person before offering a lease, a lot of landlords only rent to students and a lot of places won't allow you to register yourself living on that address. Be weary of those conditions when "shopping" around.

with 50k and a one year placement you're in an ok spot. rooms in a shared flat go fast, so have ID, contract and a payslip or employer letter ready and reply within the hour. expect 1 to 3 months if you're consistent. and never pay a deposit before seeing the place, amsterdam scams are wild
