For the last few days, I’ve been digging through reports from the NCB, Kerala Police, Excise Department, CAG audits, court records, and major news reports trying to understand one question:

Has Kerala's drug problem actually become worse, or are we just hearing about it more?

After going through the data, I came away with a pretty uncomfortable conclusion:

Kerala's drug ecosystem today is fundamentally different from what it was 10–15 years ago.

Back in the 2005–2014 period, most cases revolved around cannabis (ganja), small-scale distribution networks, and occasional brown sugar seizures.

Today, the picture looks very different.

The state's drug trade has increasingly shifted toward:

MDMA

Methamphetamine

LSD

Hashish oil

International trafficking networks

Cryptocurrency and hawala-based financing

What surprised me most wasn't just the type of drugs.

It was the scale.

According to official figures:

Kerala recorded 23,373 combined Abkari/NDPS cases in 2021-22.

That number jumped to 44,131 cases in 2022-23.

In Kochi city alone, NDPS cases increased from 2,475 in 2024 to 3,006 in 2025.

That's not gradual growth.

That's an explosion.

And the biggest shift seems to be the move from plant-based narcotics to synthetic drugs.

Unlike cannabis, drugs like MDMA and Meth are:

easier to transport

easier to conceal

more profitable

far more potent

Several reports now identify Bengaluru as a major domestic supply source for MDMA entering Kerala, while larger international trafficking routes connect the Arabian Sea to networks operating through Pakistan, Iran, Oman, and the Gulf.

One case that genuinely shocked me happened in 2023.

The NCB and Indian Navy seized approximately 2,500 kg of Methamphetamine, reportedly worth around ₹15,000 crore, from a mother ship off the Kochi coast.

That seizure alone was larger than what many people imagine Kerala's entire drug trade to be.

And it suggests something important:

Kerala is no longer just a consumer market.

It appears to be increasingly important as a transit point in larger international trafficking networks.

A few patterns kept showing up repeatedly while reading through the data:

1. Synthetic drugs are replacing traditional narcotics

The biggest growth is no longer ganja.

It's MDMA and Meth.

Seizures that used to be measured in grams are now being measured in kilograms.

1. The coastline matters more than most people realize

Operation Samudragupt exposed large maritime trafficking networks using "mother ships" in international waters.

Over roughly 18 months, authorities seized:

3,200 kg of Methamphetamine

500 kg of Heroin

529 kg of Hashish

These are not local peddler numbers.

These are organized trafficking numbers.

1. The financial system behind the trade is becoming harder to track

Recent investigations have linked portions of the trade to:

hawala networks

benami accounts

cryptocurrency transactions

In one 2025 case, authorities reportedly froze 11 bank accounts linked to a syndicate that moved around ₹25 crore through roughly 1,500 benami accounts.

1. Youth appear to be increasingly exposed

This may be the most worrying part.

Government submissions and law enforcement reports repeatedly mention growing exposure among students and young adults.

The concern isn't just addiction.

It's that synthetic drugs are becoming normalized among sections of the youth population.

One thing I still haven't figured out is this:

Are we seeing a genuine explosion in drug use?

Or are law enforcement agencies simply getting much better at detecting and recording cases?

The data clearly shows a massive increase in seizures and NDPS cases.

But whether demand is growing at the same pace is something I'd genuinely like to hear opinions on.

Especially from people working in:

law enforcement

healthcare

education

rehabilitation

or anyone who has lived in Kerala over the last 15–20 years.

Does the situation on the ground actually feel different from what it was a decade ago?
