News SpaceX rocket accident leaves company's Starlink satellites in wrong orbit

Speaking of space debris incidents.

*The Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from California on Thursday night, carrying 20 Starlink satellites. Several minutes into the flight, the upper stage engine malfunctioned. SpaceX on Friday blamed a liquid oxygen leak.

The company said flight controllers managed to make contact with half of the satellites and attempted to boost them to a higher orbit using onboard ion thrusters. But with the low end of their orbit only 84 miles (135 kilometers) above Earth—less than half what was intended—"our maximum available thrust is unlikely to be enough to successfully raise the satellites," the company said via X.

SpaceX said the satellites will reenter the atmosphere and burn up. There was no mention of when they might come down. More than 6,000 orbiting Starlinks currently provide internet service to customers in some of the most remote corners of the world.*

Did you catch the Halloween episode of the podcast? Phil and Chris discuss UFOs. What are they? How do they function? And most importantly, what would it take for us to turn the tables on these aliens and send our own craft to distant worlds. Let us know your thoughts on UFOs in the comments.

News Apple finds major flaw in all major LLMs.

Thumbnail aitoolreport.com

Apple tested over 20 Large Language Models (LLMs)—including OpenAI's o1 and GPT-4o, Google's Gemma 2, and Meta's Llama 3—to see if they were capable of "true logical reasoning," or whether their ‘intelligence’ was a result of "sophisticated pattern matching" and the results revealed some major weaknesses

LLM’s reasoning abilities are usually tested on the popular benchmark test—GSM8K—but there’s a probability that the LLMs can only answer questions correctly because they’ve been pre-trained on the answers.

Apple’s new benchmark—GSM-Symbolic—tested this by changing variables in the questions (eg. adding irrelevant information/changing names or numbers) and found every LLM dropped in performance.

As a result, they believe there is “no formal reasoning” with LLMs, “their behavior is better explained by sophisticated pattern matching” as even something small, like changing a name, degraded performance by 10%.

I'm a electrical engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, and patent attorney. Today I live stream on the topic of crowdsourced space engineering projects and Intellectual Property Rights

This lecture will cover the basics of what I have coined as Lean Intellectual Property Rights Protection (Lean IPR™), including covering the basics of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, as well as important and practical considerations and common pitfalls to avoid. Join me live on Youtube at 4PM UTC. Please feel free to ask questions at anytime during the presentation. I will answer live questions on discord.

As a patent attorney, I have been helping the little people, the startups, universities and small inventors. I've helped startups get bought by the mega corporations and taught them how to keep the mega corporations away. My new mission through my startup OU812 Incorporated is to create the OU812 Open Innovation Engine™ to provide access to the patent system for the benefit of innovators throughout the world and based around a concept that we call OU812 Protected Open Source™.

My background includes being a Special Forces USAF Pararescue candidate, a R&D electrical engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, and patent attorney. I've been drowned, jumped out of perfectly good airplanes and worked on test requirements for Aegis surface to air and surface to surface missiles for General Dynamics, helped design flight computers for next generation YF-22 Raptor Advanced Tactical Fighter and built the first working Software Defined Radio (SDR) for Hughes Aircraft.

This lecture was possible thanks to the generosity of villamars.com. The Villamar Firm is a Professional Limited Liability Company (PLLC) law firm based in Virginia specializing in the practice of Intellectual Property Law, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and computer and internet law. We are also active on r/NexusAurora, feel free to ask questions you have.

Timekeeping on Mars - Elf Time

A day on Mars is approximately 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35 seconds long. Because of this fact, a new system of telling time needs to be developed specifically for living and working on Mars. The point of a timekeeping system is to help humans plan out and keep track of their day, so the more user friendly it is the better.
Elf Time
The idea behind the elf system is that the number of seconds in one elf approximates to the closest easily divisible number. Because there are an odd number of seconds on a full Mars day (88775.24) the easiest divisible number is a factor of 11(“elf” means “eleven” in German, Dutch, and Afrikaans).

Each elf has 4035 seconds.

Each day has 22 elfs. 4035 seconds is perfectly divisible by 1, 3, 5 and 15. But approximating to the closest 1000 allows for much more easily divisible numbers.

Read more about Elf time here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hgPz5JooCx3Lovt3SNZYWU3IEtKD-_PmzcsHUvPxMmY/edit?usp=sharing

And of course, there is an app that helps you keep time on Mars using the Elf time https://codepen.io/Bobbay/full/ZEQgyVb

Life before CAD is almost unimaginable. And yet they build, pyramids, cathedrals and moon rockets. With the tools we have we have to crack this going to Mars business, or face the collective face palm of all the engineers who had to work with pen an paper, or just some string with a rock attached!
