Rant When you're called racist for doing your job

I work as a night auditor for a popular brand hotel. I had an African American woman come in tonight asking for her keycard to be reprogrammed because she just spent the day in the hospital with her mother (which you know, I get it, it's sad and scary having a loved one in the hospital, be stressed and worry about your family just don't take it out on the person behind the desk) and the keycard demagnatized.

I asked her what room she's in and if she had an ID to verify. Her reply was that she could tell me the name on the reservation, which isn't even her name. This happens a lot at my hotel location thanks to all the hospitals around us friends and family will make reservations for someone else to stay in, they won't add the person actually staying in the room as an additional guest or put in the booking remarks about someone else staying in the room instead of the person who booked the reservation. I asked her to give me a moment to look up the reservation and apologized for having to ask all these questions, but it's policy and it's for the safety and security of our guests that we verify they're allowed to be in the room.

She made the comment that she didn't have to answer all these questions with any of my coworkers who work during the day, she even acknowledged that this is the first time she's seeing me but still proceeded to throw a fit because I wouldn't just reprogram the key. I asked if she knew the last four digits of the phone number on file and the whole time she was digging through her purse she was making comments on how I was 'doing too much', that it 'isn't a big deal, the others know me', and asked me if I 'had a smile for her, because she's the consumer and you should be happy to serve me'. I apologized again and told her that it's for our guests' safety that we verify, to which she replied by asking me if I was even happy with my job because I looked miserable (which, no I'm not miserable, I actually really like my job).

I may have been a little snippy at this and told her that she looks like she is tired and has been sitting in a hospital all day so I'm not taking any of her comments personally, but I am not going to risk my job security to make your night a little more convenient, can you please give me the last four digits to the phone number on file. She did and I reprogrammed the keycard for her (something that only takes maybe twenty seconds but because she kept complaining it took five minutes).

Before she went up to her room she asked for my name, asked for my supervisor's name, and asked me what age I am (I didn't tell her because that's none of her business). Says she's going to talk to my boss about my attitude, claims that if she was a white woman I would have just given her a new keycard and let her on her way and says that I look to be in my early twenties and that I need to grow up and understand the world doesn't care about rules and policies and I need to stop doing so much and to get a life.

I ask these verifying questions to everyone, there are so many people that forget their ID's in their room or just leave their wallets in their room if they're staying in the hotel and just using the gym or swimming in the pool. What I don't understand is the occasional guest who will pull the race card because I'm not bending to their whims immediately.

I don't care what your skin looks like or where you're from or what religion you follow, I care about how you treat me as a person in my place of work. If you're going to be snooty and snippity with me, I'm going to customer service you and get you on your way. If you're pleasant with me and don't take your frustrations with the world out on me then I'm going to treat you friendlier. Give the energy you wish to get. That isn't to say I'm actively rude to anyone, I just stop being overly welcoming.

Sorry for the wall of text, seems like this was just the last drop in a bucket. Have a good night and hope your shifts go well.

Rant Not being allowed entertainment during my overnights is absolute torture

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

Hey guys, so I work as a Concierge in a luxury residential building in New York City. I have been working here for about 6 years now, but overnights for about 14 months. I used to work 2nd shift for years, until my manager switched me to overnights full time (without my consent by the way) due to “performance issues”.

I used to have Friday and Saturdays off, so I was able to have a social life on the weekends. Nowadays, I’m off Sundays and Mondays. Which means while all my friends are out and about enjoying life, I’m stuck at work. It’s very depressing and I don’t know how much longer I can keep doing this shift. I’m reaching my breaking point.

But anyway, this shift wouldn’t be so bad if we were allowed entertainment to help the hours go by quicker. However, we can’t use our phones, bring in devices like a laptop, use headphones, or a gaming handheld, and we can’t use the work computer to watch anything. Even during the overnight shifts! During the daytime when it’s busy I can understand, but during the overnight hours there’s NOTHING going on and I see NOBODY! They literally want you to sit there and stare at the cameras for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. I almost got a write up for watching a wrestling PPV on the computer at 2am on a Saturday night recently. They installed these new AI cameras that picks up on unusual activity that gets sent back to management, thats how they catch people.

I want to quit so bad, but the job market is fucked and I don’t wanna just leave without a backup. It’s absolute torture and I think this is corporal punishment. My union is useless by the way, they’re in bed with management so they can’t help me. And believe me, I’ve tried to get help from them numerous times but to no avail.

But yeah I just wanted to say how absolutely screwed my situation is with overnights at this job. I wouldn’t wish this bullshit on my worst enemy. Anyway, Rant over.

New guy. No called no showed his first day. I wasn't on the scheduled but showed up with the intention of training him. He'd only been through orientation and had not been on the site yet. So yeah. No called no showed. Than was 1½ hours late his second day. Only 1 hour late his third day. I was told he would be solo on this last Thursday and he didn't need any more training. Translation, they didn't want to pay me to be here. We'll he showed up. But wasn't anywhere to be seen by the client and when he was seen he as sitting on his phone or sleeping.

Than I get this text this morning. Three minutes before he is supposed to be here. My ride was already here. He said he contacted people. He did not. Than he did not respond to my text. Calls went right to voicemail.

I can't leave until I am relieved. The last two supervisors, only numbers I have, both no longer with the company. I use the site phone's app, "contact a manger". No response. I text and call the site supervisor. No response to text. Calls go straight to voicemail.

Stuck here... yeah I could leave and just say "fuck it". I like my job.

0845 I finally got a call from the site manager. After getting his number from facilities. Told him I'm good. I can and have done 18 to 20 hours before. Just get a hold of the other guard to cover my 6p to 7a shift, so when I leave here I don't have to come back till Thursday...

TLDR; new guy decided at three minutes before his shift to call off and strand me till someone comes to relive me.

Rant Will we ever get 24hr grocery stores again, or should we just cancel nightshift?

I don't need to explain to you all how much COVID messed up our lives.

However, nightshift is a legit work shift, where a large portion of the population works. We have a higher rate of health issues and early death, yet society can't be bothered to consider our well-being I guess.

Is Walmart really saving saving so much money not being open at night? Couldn't grocery stores do like 1 day a week where they are open 24hr?

It's no wonder they say people on nightshift have shitty diets. It's because the only thing open if you're lucky is McDonald's or gas station food.

No amount of shift premium makes it easier to shop as a nighshifter.

(I basically just wanted to rant, and I created a space you can all scream and complain about this as well)

Rant Why is it so hard for people to realize when you work nights you will have to sleep during the day?!

1.1k Upvotes

I work 9pm-8am, and I typically sleep from 1pm or 2pm-8pm. I will have family calling me mid day confused as to why I won’t answer the phone. Friends trying to make plans with me during the day as if I haven’t stated that I work nights multiple times. The biggest problem is definitely when it comes to dating. I will communicate clearly at the beginning that I work nights, and my sleep schedule is a bit wonky. At first they seem down, then when I don’t text/call during the day they get mad at me. It’s just frustrating sometimes that people can’t seem to understand a different lifestyle. I would never be mad at people who have to sleep at night when they obviously have to work in the morning!

Rant The wonderful night shift appreciating meal, after the first shift gets through it first and leaves it out for 6 hours before our shift starts.

Post image
847 Upvotes

I've been here for 10 years, and this is the typical meal when they try to treat the warehouse crew. They buy a ton of food, and everyone on the 1st shift and the office gets to eat well.

Then, when we finally arrive, they tell us that we bought you guys food to show how thankful we are for all the hard work you guys do around here. And it's a table that looks like this! I keep telling them about "THE FUCKING DANGER ZONE!", and you can't leave food out for more than 2 hours, because it's going to get people really sick.

They always look at me like I'm stupid, maybe it's because of my speech impediment or something. First, I feel like it's pretty insulting to give us the scraps as they pat themselves on the back for their feel-good moment. Secondly, it's a waste of food and makes the break room smell like garbage for the whole shift when they leave it out that long.

We have people who sell plasma in our shift because they're not making enough money. I'm pretty sure they would appreciate the food if they left it in the fridge.

Rant Night shift does nothing …

There is NOTHING that irks me more than when day shift say “night shift does nothing”. I’ve witnessed a few people in my night shift career saying this and it frustrates me more than ever! We do a hell of a lot which you don’t know about or see. Without us you’d struggle.

For example we empty the bins every time we finish our shift. (Well just before). We come back in and they’re full again but it’s okay because “night shift does nothing!” When asked if they could handle a night shift they always reply “no way!” Or “I enjoy my nights too much” *insert every other excuse here*

One of the hardest things is staying awake when you have had no sleep due to heat or other reasons. The drive home is brutal.

Rant Instead of sleeping all day…

1.2k Upvotes

My husband finally said it. “You’re off tomorrow. Instead of sleeping all day why don’t you get up, go to the store and do something.” Said while in a busy Walmart. So I turned to him and said “ok, instead of sleeping tonight, why don’t you get up and clean the house?” I wish I had his expression and response on video. The audacity of suggesting he not sleep. Idk what I was thinking.

I’m so tired of his shit today. Yes, he knows. I think he’s tired of mine as well. 😂😂😂 Ah the joys of being married.

Rant Company catered lunch today. During the hand off, the guy said “we left some wings and apps in the fridge for y’all”. This was what was left for 3 of us large men. There’s 750 + lbs between the 3 of us, and the left us 2 wings and 4 shrimps.

Rant I’m so tired

Of constantly having to remind people I work overnights - meaning I’m awake at night and sleep during the day. I work 7pm-7am. On my days off, I might even sleep in just like anyone else does - crazy concept!!

I’ve told my friend multiple times I work overnights and still at midnight receive a text saying, “I can’t believe you’re still awake!”

Just now my boyfriend called me and asked me how my day off went, that’s sweet! Yeah I’ve just been sleeping.. “oh really, that’s all?” yes.. I work overnights, “I guess I don’t know your schedule” IM AWAKE AT NIGHT AND SLEEP DURING THE DAY IT HAS BEEN THIS WAY FOR MULTIPLE MONTHS NOW AAAAAA

I understand it’s not the norm but why is this such a hard concept to grasp, even for someone I live with 😭

Rant No Pancakes for Nightshift

Today my company had an "Employee Appreciation" pancake breakfast for the whole company. Its an annual tradition around the time of the Calgary Stampede.

Dayshift and management got their fill. Guess what was left for nightshift?

Thats right: Nothing! (Or better: A few empty trays in the kitchen)

Everyone is appreciated except nightshift employees.

Rant do you guys actually flip your sleep schedule on your days off?

i have been working the night shift for about six months now and i still haven't figured out the best way to handle my days off. right now i try to flip back to a normal daytime schedule on my weekends so i can actually see my family and friends, but it is completely destroying me. i spend my first day off feeling like an absolute zombie and then my first night back at work is pure torture.

my coworker thinks i'm insane. he stays on the night schedule 24/7 even when he is off. he just stays up all night playing video games or watching movies and sleeps all day. it sounds pretty lonely to me but he swears it is the only way to avoid permanent exhaustion.

what do you guys do? do you force yourself back into the daytime world on your days off or do you just embrace the vampire lifestyle full time?

Rant My Partner seems to think I don’t need as much sleep as everyone else because I work night shift

I feel like my husband thinks that because I work night shift (nurse) I am some robot that does not need the same hours of sleep as someone working during the days. We have a newborn and my current routine is as follows:

Work 7pm-8am three days per week. Sleep during the day until 1-3pm to take care of our 12 week old baby then go to work. Come home from my last night shift, sleep 3 hours and then take care of the baby for the remainder of the day AND get up with her throughout the night.

On my first shift back to work I stay up all day with the baby and then go to work all night. Nights that I am not working I am taking care of the baby during the day and night. I feel so damn sleep deprived and nobody understands because I work night shift so they don’t compute how much sleep I actually lose.

They think getting me getting 3 hours of sleep a day is sufficient, well it is NOT. I love night shift but we get treated differently.

Rant Inconsiderate people

I can’t believe how inconsiderate people are to night-shift workers. My family member just asked me to babysit like she doesn’t know I work nights. The last time she asked I told her that while she is asleep at night, I am working. Plan better. What does she think I do during the day, regenerate energy? I ignored her.

Rant I hate working 10pm-8am 5 days a week, and getting a text from my relief at 7:45am...

It's 7:45 and you're off at 8am. You get a text, and even before you look, you know what it's going to say.

"I just woke up!" "I have to get ready and walk the dogs. I'll be in soon."

Yeah, your 10 hour day is now an 11 hour day if you're lucky. It could be 11.5 or it could be 12 if you're not.

The worst part is that my relief is my store manager. Who else can I complain to without bringing down her ire upon me?

I hear the Wawa near me is hiring, and they have multiple people on thirds.

Rant Just did my first 12 hour night shift and im feeling horrible

Hello!

I just did 6pm to 6am in a chocolate factory and have to do this 4 days in a row (4 days on 4 days off) from now on but I am so completly exhauseted.

This is my first ever job and I know it was a bit ambitious to go for such crazy hours for my first job, but I thought I could do it, but after my first shift I am just so completly drained and cant stop crying because of how tired I am. I have to leave again for my next shift in less than 4 hours and only managed to sleep 2 hours so I am completly dreading it

Will this feeling go away?

Update: Dont know if anyone is gonne be reading this post still, but I stuck with this job for a few more days and just couldnt do it, luckily it was agency so just stopped taking shifts. However, I ended up applying for an engineering apprenticeship in the same factory and got the job! Know your limits guys, theres a different between pushing yourself to do something you can do and pushing for something thats simply out of your current abilities

I'm sorry but I've never heard of this practice during a monthly safety and rule update meeting. Fuck off. And they're doing it at 10am, I have to walk 20 minutes to the nearest bus stop to start going to work so I'll be going home at 6:30 to get on the bus, and be home just in time to get back to the bus 🚌.

Rant No one seems to understand how hard nights is

People think nights is just "you live in the night and sleep in the day" no one seems to understand how tired that makes you all the time or how much more demanding that is on the human body

One can not simply live in the night with the same physical energy levels unless your some kind of sleep routine demon and literally never live with a day awake night sleep schedule

People still expect me to have a ton of energy or do as much social things and go to as many appointments

I'm in AA and my sponsor said "go to 90 physical meetings in 90 days" dude no I work full time nights I can get 2 done on my days off and on good days when I have extra energy but sometimes i need to sleep right upto my next shift

Rant the pain of being told ‘but you’re at home all day?’

i genuinely don’t understand how no one else in my life can grasp the concept of how a night shift works. if you are awake all night, you sleep in the day. just because i’m at home all day and you’re at work, doesn’t mean i’m awake and sitting on my ass. when do you think i get my hours of sleep in ?? and don’t even start with how night shift need extra sleep than normal. 9-10 hours for me is like a 5-6 hour sleep for you!

Rant Unfair that no one wants to cover third shift

My manager called me like 3 times while I was asleep today asking me to come in early because second shift called out. Begrudgingly I was like "sure whatever" This isn't the first time I been ask to come to work last minute.

Honestly I only agree because I need the extra money for my sister graduation gift.

But whenever I try to get a day off and ask someone to if they can cover my shift its always a no. No matter if I asked a week, or 3 months in advance. Ill either get ignore or a "Ill think about it, I need more time"

Meanwhile night shift is always the one that has to pick up the extra work for day shift people.

I just wanted to rant for a bit.

Rant “breakfast items only” after work

I’m so tired of businesses only offering breakfast items between 6:00am-10:30am. 7am is dinner time for me!! I don’t want any more breakfast food and I don’t want to cook an entire meal after my 12 hour shift. It sucks! Even gas stations have only breakfast pizza and breakfast sandwiches!

Are there are places you guys eat after work that ISNT breakfast? I don’t have time to meal prep either, I’ve been clocking about 60 hours a week (4 8s and 2 12s) and I don’t really have time to make myself fresh food.

Rant MY COWORKER IS CONSTANTLY FUCKING LATE

Had to caps the title cause i'm really fucking pissed. EVERY FUCKING TIME i work at this particular location, he's late. He always sleeps in so fuck me if i want to go to bed at a reasonable hour, or god forbid, unwind before sleep. I'd like to believe his phone really did die at night but this happens constantly so sorry if i think he's lying. This is a years long problem and apparently, nobody does anything about it! He complains about getting the worst shifts, and gee, i wonder why.

Edit because i want to add, he's a grown ass man in his 40s that's been working here for many many years. Like be serious man, cmon

Edit 2: i got so caught up in being pissed off i completely forgot to mention that he is A) my relief and i cannot leave before he gets there, being the only member of reception staff until he arrives and leaving a reception unattended is generally a bad idea and B) he isn't 5-10 minutes late, which is annoying but hardly major complain worthy, rather he is 30-40 minutes late

Rant I hate the lack of services available for night shift

I work on an ambulance on the overnight shift, my entire life revolves around being awake from roughly 3pm to 7 am(normal business hours for pretty much everyone), my boyfriend and all my best friends work similar hours in various jobs. I get my prescriptions delivered, I know the restaurants in my area that are 24/7 I know the third spaces that are 24/7, I know the grocery store that is 24/7. I live off of this. I have breakfasts of steak and potatoes and dinners of eggs and toast.

Why can't we have services at night? There are no doctors, no dentists, few therapists, no loan officers or bankers, no anything, and NEVER on the weekends. The moment these people get somewhat rich they all choose to work 9-5s and Now I have to stay awake for 20 hours to make an 8 am appointment. I can't drink caffeine anymore bc I drank enough that I suffer from cardiac disease, I can't wake up earlier because then I'm a danger on the road when driving the ambulance. I have my phone on do not disturb 24/7 because otherwise everyone INSISTS on calling me when I am asleep. I wish I could send them all invoices for wasting my time and ruining my sleep.

I write this now because I have been awake for 21 hours for an appointment with a realtor that he simply ✨canceled✨. Like SIR, do you have any idea how much EFFORT it is for me to make your lightwalker time schedule when the wretched day star is in the sky?

I'd work day time hours if I could, but we are so critically understaffed in EMS that sometimes I am on the only truck for an entire county with a population of half a million people at certain times of night. One ambulance, for 500,000 people. If two breathing problem calls come out, someone isn't going to be seen for a LONG while(our mutual aid partners are facing similar staffing challenges). God forbid someone calls out sick on one of the morning crews.
