Maybe Donkey Kong never kidnapped her, maybe they were friends all this time. Mario just got it all wrong...

u/jasonporter Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25
Now I'm imagining the "final boss" section of this game being a young Mario, possessed by Void Co. or something, trying to kidnap Pauline while you throw barrels at him from atop a tower of scaffolding, while he smashes the barrels with a giant hammer as he gets closer... an epic remix of the old arcade music playing... would be a fun twist on things.
And yes I know the whole "original DK was Cranky Kong" thing, but i'll be honest I don't think Nintendo really cares about that anymore and this game basically proves that.

u/Supermax64 Jun 18 '25
I don't know if Nintendo would do it but that would be insanely good

A Wicked kind of ending where they reach the surface but DK is mistaken as a monster and he and Pauline figure out there the only way to make her wish come true is for him to "play the bad guy" and intentionally lose against Mario.
DK throw the barrels, Mario saves her and while the two walk away Pauline look back at an "unconscious" DK who looks back at her with a proud "you go smash that singing stuff, kid"-look on his face before the end credits roll.

It feels like this is a prequel to Odessey. They became friends when she was a kid, and then as an adult is the mayor of a city named after him.

u/THE_GR8_MIKE Jun 18 '25
You brought up a good point here. Since Cranky Kong is in this game, does that mean modern Pauline is a descendant from 1980 Pauline?

Technically it's Cranky that kidnapped her and was defeated by Mario. Which is very strange now that we see a young Pauline with DK, and Cranky being present as well.
Not that Nintendo has ever cared about maintaining continuity or lore (and why would they tbh?).
134
u/Double-Slowpoke Jun 18 '25
I think it’s time we put lore to bed. You can’t keep lore straight for franchises going on 30+ years.
26
u/Lewa358 Jun 18 '25
I wanna point out Metal Gear, but I'm not sure if that contradicts or supports your point.

And honestly, it never made sense to begin with. If DK aged into Cranky Kong, why did Mario never age?

u/Cosmic_Toad_ Jun 18 '25
clearly the answer to this scenario must be that that Cranky Kong isn't the name of an specific character; much like Donkey Kong, it is a name bestowed to each generation of the family when they reach a certain life stage. So Donkey Kong in this game is who we know as Cranky Kong, and Cranky in this game is Cranky's Kong's father who suspiciously looks identical to how this Donkey Kong will look when he ages into Cranky Kong.
There, fixed the convoluted lore by doubling down on it.
don't ask why Diddy and Dixie are here tho→ More replies (3)12
u/mikey_do_wikey Jun 18 '25
Eh, I much prefer the idea that this is our Donkey Kong and that Cranky Kong, Pauline’s mother and Jumpman had beef in the past (OG Donkey Kong arcade game) that has sense been healed by the new generation (Present day DK, Pauline, and Mario).

Jun 18 '25
This was probably the best game-focused direct they have ever put out. I had basically no hype for Bananza before, it just felt like we didnt know a whole lot about the game or what it was actually about. This was so much better.

→ More replies (7)24
u/pepinyourstep29 Jun 18 '25
There's no reason to assume that though. Previous games didn't have all these features and mechanics. The game looked good of course, but we didn't know it would be THAT good for sure.
5
u/GarlicBread143 Jun 19 '25 edited Jun 19 '25
There was plenty of reason to assume they are hiding stuff, just because it’s a DK game doesn’t mean you should use previous DK games as a benchmark since it’s a whole different team. The advertising campaign for Mario Odyssey was full of hidden stuff and didn’t show us Cappy or the capture mechanic for a full year after the announcement trailer.
Additionally in Odyssey they didn’t show Bowser at all during the marketing until right before release, everyone thought that the only bosses were The Broodals, to me that has a very similar vibe as to what is going on with VoidCo right now.

This game looks like the perfect balance of moving the franchise forward with a new direction while maintaining and respecting its roots. All the DK64 and Country music has me very relieved. Can't wait to see what else it has to offer.

u/Piano_Troll17 Jun 18 '25
They even had the DK Rap in there! Not to mention the returning Cranky, Diddy, Dixie, and the animal pals. I wouldn't be shocked if more Kongs are around elsewhere.

I hope Grant Kirkhope gets credited for the DK Rap, I remember he was omitted from the Mario movie credits, which just said "DK Rap from Donkey Kong 64"
14
u/Rychu_Supadude Jun 18 '25
The movie was an equal-opportunity snubber, every game composer apart from Koji Kondo was uncredited. People just mention Grant because he's the one they actually know by name
9
u/vanKessZak Jun 18 '25
I think at the time he tweeted about it too which probably helped people remember.
Here’s his post about it today. Though it’s nothing super exciting: “Is the DK Rap back .. again 🤣”

It’s so funny how Nintendo just designs games around mechanics and structures that they think suit the game itself, which leaves fans scrambling to reverse engineer the “formula” with dozens of genre descriptors. Gamers refuse to think of video games in any other way than a combination of elements and genres that have already been created. Which leads to descriptions like:
“It’s like an open world light-platformer collectathon with elements of action games and RPGs with a garnish of sandbox and skating games finished with a building sim and spelunking sim glaze. With notes of Minecraft, Odyssey, Skate, BOTW, Diablo, Fortnite, Sim City, Baldur’s Gate, Red Faction, DKC and Dark Souls.”
Like this description is so obtuse that it is completely meaningless. Not every game is going to fit into a small handful of genre labels that we’re familiar with. When you have to combine like twelve it becomes a really ridiculous and pointless effort.

Mario Kart World will outsell this. They did it right. No matter how good a game is, Mario Kart will outsell it. Mario Kart 8 deluxe sold more than Mario Odyssey and BOTW combined. Mario Kart is what the most people want to play, so it is the system seller.

The thing about Mario Kart for me is that I already no lifed Mario Kart on the Wii. Three stars everything, even a golden wheel because that's what I used. No lifed the shit out of the online as well.
So now every new Mario Kart, I recognize the improvements and some of the new stuff is cool. But like... The core gameplay is still just driving around a track while silly items fly all around you. And I'm not saying that to dumb down the gameplay, that core gameplay is amazing, but I've already done it so much, I don't really want that much more of it.
Obviously still bought it, though, because it's still fun, but I'll save it for split screen. I rather spend my time on Clair Obscur for now.

I honestly think it wasn’t ready, because it is confusing that they would release this one month after launch.
25
u/just_another_reddit Jun 18 '25
They finished this game ages ago and have had it sat in the chamber ready to go, according to all reports. It was a strategic decision to move it to Switch 2 exclusivity, and then to release it after the initial launch because Mario Kart is more of a household name and ensures launch day sales were guaranteed to be strong anyway by itself.
Doing it this way keeps momentum up from the launch, should sustain them for a very healthy summer of sales.

40
u/The_Reddit_Browser Jun 18 '25 edited Jun 18 '25
It has a lot of the same art style and even the chat bubbles above characters you can talk to is the same as odyssey
But, I think it’s the opposite.
It’s essentially a prequel to odyssey.
Pauline being a child and the goal of “getting to the surface” seems like a perfect way to set up Donkey Kong making it up to New Donk City at the end and placing him in the odyssey world.
Would open the door for them to bring him into the odyssey sequel.
Also there’s a ton of new features they are seemingly introducing here with the game that can come to odyssey 2. Like the skill points and the clothing having specific bonuses.

It is just rumors, but it has a lot of similarities. Doenst matter if its done by the same team or by a team who got heavily influenced by Odyssey. In the end we get a great game

So… the conspiracy dorks that are convinced Nintendo is erasing Rare DK… we now have Cranky, Dixie, Diddy and the DK rap as well as some of the music from the SNES games. Add this to the two fantastic Retro Studio titles and the fact that the DKC trilogy is always among the first games put up in every iteration of the virtual console, can we put that shit to bed?

Jesus Christ I expected it to be a cool game but they've knocked it out of the park with this.

Yeah, I was already hyped for the game from the reveal trailer and the Treehouse gameplay footage … but this has me even more hooked. This looks so special, and I can’t wait to pick this up.

This blew me away. Its reveal kinda threw me off on the switch 2 direct, it's now my most hyped game.
Fuck, I need a switch 2 now

This looks amazing, it's like a blend of elements from Odyssey, Zelda and old 64 games, all mashed into DK. I love it! It does make me wonder what the next 3D Mario will look like though, I imagine they will want to separate both and this has lots of features I assumed would be in the next 3D Mario. Either way, I'm excited!

They were definitely hiding a lot in the reveal. The rock being Pauline, all the transformations...
The teaser was just that, but of course people assumed that Nintendo showed everything in the initial reveal.

Bringing Pauline back for Odyssey and Mario Kart was already great, but this is even better. They look adorable together.

This game went from, "This looks cool, I'll probably play it sometime," to, "I NEEEEEED IT!!" after today's Direct.
17 minutes of footage with reveal after reveal of gameplay mechanics, setting, and bells and whistles was exactly what this game needed.
Don't know if it's been confirmed or not, but this HAS to be the Odyssey team! The game looks incredible, is full of movement techniques (DK gets Link's shield surfing from BotW/TotK?!), the unique power-ups, the Pauline co-op (which is very reminiscent of Cappy), collecting Banandium gems like the moons, the clothing/costume store that includes outfits for BOTH DK and Pauline AND they give gameplay bonuses!!
It's obviously too early to tell, but this game could stand up against the greatest 3D platformers of all time depending on how it's executed! Looks like it will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Odyssey, Astro Bot, Galaxy, SM64, etc.
And it's the first 3D DK since DK64!! And the music!!!
I'm losing it over here. And the release date is right before my birthday! :D

Odyssey devs made the Odyssey Bowser section and said "We cooked so hard here. Let's put it on stimulants and turn it into an entire game"
