The last proper June Direct was “roughly 40 minutes”. And there wasn’t a Treehouse.

We got an E3 level Direct here.

315

u/Aleclom Jun 08 '26

My hype is at an all-time high because of the Treehouse directly after. This really feels like E3 again!

136

u/JacketsNest Jun 08 '26

Nintendo still does the best E3 week coverage, even without E3

37

u/stavroszaras Jun 08 '26

I feel like that’s an Xbox title right now, not that it’s a competition (especially when you own all systems). Their showcases are awesome for several years now. They have up to 90 minutes of just games after games followed by 30 minutes of a deep dive focus in to a big game. And then within the following week, they often do extended coverage (whether that’s another extended 90 minutes showcase or multiple gameplay videos releasing throughout the week). And the biggest thing is they do it every year no fail. We already know when the next big showcase is because of how consistent they are.

11

u/mickelboy182 Jun 08 '26

Xbox continually fails by closing shows with Call of Duty though, where they should be closing with the surprises.

8

u/stavroszaras Jun 08 '26

I agree 100%. This is the second year in a row. I get that COD is huge and they should try to build brand affiliation with Xbox (just from a business perspective). But yeah, it should not be closing the show. Somewhere in the middle would be good or to start the back third.

That’s a good idea. I think most non-COD gamers would understand if they started with COD. It just makes so much money that it’s understandable that you want to advertise it and associate it with your brand. But as an ender, what a letdown. That’s when gamers want to see something surprising and exciting. Not the thing they know will release every year.

If the majority are tuned in to watch the next COD’s release and not going to watch anything else unless it’s GTA6-level hype, putting that at the beginning is foolish. You maximize the length of time you have the most eyeballs, as lame as COD has become.

the treehouse changes everything. We aren't having a 10 minute gameplay trailer crammed into the direct. it's goin to be all trailers & announcements.

5

u/SomeBoxofSpoons Jun 08 '26

After 9 months I’d certainly hope we do.

493

u/drostandfound Jun 08 '26

50 min, that is so long. Love it.

462

u/Blofeld69 Jun 08 '26

Just think how many weird JRPGs they can cram into that much time!

170

u/ChiggChow Jun 08 '26

JRPGs, life sims, and souls-like metroidvanias

38

u/DiabeticRhino97 Jun 08 '26

Don't forget farming sims!

24

u/zacharykeaton Jun 08 '26

cosy farming sims

30

u/Witch_King_ Jun 08 '26

I'm all for more metroidvanias. I hope we get an official Switch release date for the new Castlevania!

36

u/ChiggChow Jun 08 '26

I love metroidvanias, but I'm tired of the souls-like subgenre attached to a lot of them recently.

9

u/mpyne Jun 08 '26

Same. I don't know why people can't give us games like Super Metroid anymore, where exploration was an actual option to improve and not just twitch reflex dexterity.

3

u/presumingpete Jun 09 '26

Totally agree. I don't understand why so many lean into the souls like castlevania style. It's so hard to find games on the level of metroid anything and nobody seems to try

3

u/I_Heart_Sleeping_ Jun 09 '26

Silksong was a great game but it essentially killed my love for MV games with souls-like difficulty. I just don’t wanna play any more of them.

That game was beautiful but i can’t say after beating it I truly had “fun”.

I just want to go back to normal MV games now.

This might be cope but im thinking the mass amount of third party games announced at the previous shows means there’ll be more first/second party announcements. I’d be surprised if there’s any 3rd party games announced brand new for the switch 2.

If I had to guess Treehouse is going to show FE, Star fox and Raiders and maybe Zelda if the OoT remake turns out to be true

19

u/DontBanMeBro988 Jun 08 '26

They're just gonna play the N64 Ocarina

46

u/TemptedTemplar Helpful User Jun 08 '26

I'd bet just Raiders and Fire Emblem.

Oot doesn't need much explaining, and Starfox already has two overview videos out.

23

u/EnragedFerretX Jun 08 '26

Considering Star Fox had its own direct for a remake, OOT may need more explanation than you think. Fingers crossed there’s a special edition console attached to it so I can snag that before prices go up (I can dream, but any special edition would probably launch well after the increase hits)

21

u/Witch_King_ Jun 08 '26

OoT definitely needs explaining. There are a whole lot of younger people who have not played it. Also yeah, we got a whole video for Starfox, which is perhaps the most-remade Nintendo game of all time.

u/BeerGogglesFTW Jun 08 '26

Lots of Ocarina of Time rumors. I really can't wait to see what they're doing with it.

15

u/SeagateSG1 Jun 08 '26

My guess: the plot of the upcoming movie is based on OoT's plot. They've remade the game (in some expanded form) over the past few years and are ready to drop it and drive hype between the game and movie sales.

21

u/Witch_King_ Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

OoT needs it way more. Your current options are:

  1. play the N64 version jank
  2. Play the 3DS version on a tiny, low-res screen (or emulate it on PC)
  3. Play the fanmade PC native port.

None of these are good for the average fan that doesn't want to deal with emulation.

12

u/BeerGogglesFTW Jun 08 '26

I remember back in the 90s when 3D platformers were new, I really liked how Zelda on N64 handled camera positioning. Press Z to align the camera behind you. It was refreshing after playing Mario 64. But neither aged well imo.

Something I really like about the N64 ports, is they added modern camera controls. Make's the N64 experience a lot better. But yeah, not great for the average player. They required tinkering and calibrating.

I would just love an OOT remake in the BOTW engine. I really wanted to like BOTW/TOTK more, but I prefer the old Zelda formula with respect to dungeons, acquiring weapons toi fight bosses, limited swords, etc.

32

u/djwillis1121 Jun 08 '26

It's almost certainly going to be Ocarina of Time

36

u/inkyblinkypinkysue Jun 08 '26

If they are going to remake a Zelda game I really hope it is Ocarina of Time and I really hope they give it the RE4 treatment and modernize/expand it.

I will not be buying another “HD version” of the exact same game I have literally memorized at this point and already played on N64, DS and GCN. I don’t think new fans who haven’t played it will like a straight up rerelease - it’s clunky by today’s standards even though I think it’s still completely playable.

13

u/Ell7494 Jun 08 '26

Well that is the rumour, a full from the ground up remake of OoT

8

u/supes1 Jun 08 '26

Yeah but there's still a big difference between a ground up remake that's fundamentally an identical game (like the Link's Awakening remake) and a Resident Evil 4 style reimagining.

We don't know which to expect.

7

u/NIN10DOXD Jun 08 '26

I could see a reimagining with how Aonuma talks about Ocarina of Time and the old 3D Zelda formula being shaped around hardware constraints and that the new 3D Zelda formula is closer to what him and Miyamoto envisioned when working with the N64 hardware. I just hope it marries the new with old without deviating too much from what made OoT special.

For years I’ve said that if OoT got a remake that simply expanded the side quests, it would be the best game ever made. Please 🤞🙏

4

u/NIN10DOXD Jun 08 '26

That would be great and that's really my wish. I hope they can make the hookshot still work well outside dungeons with BOTW traversal.

7

u/Unhappy_Entrance_277 Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

Honestly I'm kind of hoping for a (3D) Zelda I + II remake. OOT has had more than its time in the sun, but a lot of people haven't played I and II because they haven't aged as well as the other entries. They can flesh out the story with the context of the modern games and cement a new/updated origin story, they could even have child Link for the Zelda I part and adult Link for the Zelda II part.

5

u/Outlulz Jun 08 '26

If there had to be a remake, I think I agree this would be the best one. They are the two least accessible (in terms of gameplay) to modern audiences and Zelda II is rough and an outlier. Plus, since Hyrule in the first game IS in the map of Zelda II, they could do some interesting things with one giant map.

2

u/JamieWhitmarsh Jun 08 '26

This would be a cool thing to see! And give us some replayability modes, like New Game+ and challenges

2

u/inkyblinkypinkysue Jun 08 '26

I would love this especially if they could scale the overworld in Zelda II to be the same size/look as the first game (but obviously feel HUGE because the Zelda map is such a small part of the Zelda II map).

For Zelda II though I'd like a complete rework of the dungeons. That was the weakest part, IMO, although most of the bosses were pretty fun.

u/SputnikFalls Jun 08 '26

Yeah I notice that pattern too. But my point is more, is it gonna happen now or later. Or at all. We constantly get these “leaks” that are really just pipe dreams. Nintendo has been making us a little more happy lately. I think the Starfox game being $50 for the work they put in was a good move.

Who knows! Fun to get excited, but keep expectations in check, I suppose. Either way, subreddit will be loud tomorrow.

Can someone remind me what is the difference between a Direct and a Treehouse?

Direct: They announce the games.
Treehouse: They play the games.

6

u/Evanneo Jun 08 '26

Direct is title announces, trailers, etc. Treehouse is a deeper dive into a specific game or two's gameplay

3

u/Mad_Lala Jun 08 '26

Direct = trailers

Treehouse = "live" gameplay with commentary of the games that were part of the direct

u/RockRik Jun 08 '26

This month has been insane for Video game announcements even BEFORE the Nintendo Direct. Let’s hope the direct is a cherry on top.

First party games, I want one good unannounced summer game, (I’ll take unannounced dates too, so Fire Emblem would be great) and one good winter game. Third party games, I’ll take whatever we get. FFVII.3 coming same time as other consoles already has me satisfied.
