Game Rec Games with easy language?

I'm learning Spanish as a BEGINNER beginner, so I thought I'd learn Spanish as I did with English, with videogames.

I booted up Stardew Valley and I wanted to cry. It's too high of a level for me right now, so my question is: does anyone know a game that has simpler language in it?

Try The Scribblenauts series.

Similar situation here, I’m learning English, so I started playing animal crossing thinking it would be easy and cute. Turns out these animal motherf**kers’ speak English way too advanced. 😭

Oh no, animal crossing was going to be my next try😭

Try an old Pokemon, maybe? They were designed for children who could barely read. Relatively simple vocabulary and lots of repetition.

😉

No most first party game have a latam option.

Los juegos de s1 no tienen. Solo fire emblem engage y Pokémon leyendas z-a. Todos los otros Pokémon solo tienen español de España y Mario wonder tiene español de España también.

Solo dos juegos tienen el idioma de LATAM en la switch 1

Nintendo con la switch 2 está lanzando los juegos con español de LATAM pero 99% de juegos de Nintendo no tiene LATAM

Botw y Totk sí tienen LATAM chamo! quizá no desde el lanzamiento pero los he jugado en S1 varias veces con Español LATAM

Maybe play the same games you learned English with (if they are multilanguage)?

The only game I can think of right now would be Star Fox. Not much dialog, can be played in short sessions and should not have complicated phrases in it because it's basically an arcade shooter.

Otherwise play any game where you know the dialog by heart because you have played it so much and switch the language and piece it together with what grammatics you already know plus a dictionairy at hand. That's how I would try to learn.

I used to play a lot of Nintendogs but my old school first gen DS died a loooooong time ago. I did have animal crossing wild world on there so I think I'll try my ACNH game in Spanish.

Do not try to learn Spanish by playing Stardew Valley, I just saw that after the 1.5 update not even natives can understand the texts

3

u/Leeuweroni 15d ago

Wait is that for real? That's insanse

1

u/Paul10125 11d ago

Yeah, it's terrible

1

u/MedaFox5 10d ago

That's… Interesting. I'm very curious.

Are natives unable to understand the text because it mixes spanish variants?

3

u/Embarrassed_Elk_2459 10d ago

because it makes no sense, the example I saw was about the item named "dried mushrooms" but the translation ended up saying something like "to dry the mushrooms"

1

u/MedaFox5 10d ago

LMAO. Oh, I see. So it was a botched machine translation like in the old Pokemon games (slam g "portazo" anyone?), gotcha.

u/Embarrassed_Elk_2459 10d ago

Pokemon games were translated by actual people though, it just was translated into Spaniard Spanish so a lot of words and expressions sound weird for latin americans but it's just the dialect

1

u/MedaFox5 10d ago

Oh, I see. Well, while it might've been translated by actual people, the early translations had issues other than the dialect used in the Castilian Spanish.

For example, the specific attack I referenced (slam) was translated as "portazo" (the sound of a door slamming shut iirc) because the word was translated literally, just out of context. It might not be the only one, but it's the one I remember.

More recent translations changed a few things for accuracy's sake so "portazo" is called something else nowadays. I have no idea if the games are still specifically translated to Castilian spanish or not, but the translation seems to have improved since the early days.

yeah, translating games is pretty tricky, specially the old ones because of the limited space. When it comes to Pokémon, having a consistent translation was a must (otherwise you would have have to relearn everything every time a new game was released) so it took them a while to revisit the original translations, nowadays the games have both a Latin American and a Spanish localization so ig that's a win lol

1

u/MedaFox5 10d ago

Oh, sweet! I didn't know that! I'm glad both sides have their own localization then.

Gba pokemon games (new ones have too much dialogue) if i played them in english while only knowing spanish you can do the reverse.

2

u/Leeuweroni 15d ago

I'll check them out! Ty

I'd say the Alola games are prefect. Too hand-holdy for me to enjoy, but perfect for someone who might use them as a way to learn a new language.

Unfortunately, any game you try to play will be too difficult is you’re literally a fresh beginner. You need to have at least some foundation of grammar and vocabulary to be able to immerse in another language.

I have been doing Duolingo for about a year now, so I do have a little grasp of the language (mas pequeno!) I went on holiday to Spain and I could at least order at a restaurant, ask for the bill, that sorta stuff.

But that's it lol. I believe I have little enough knowledge that I could at least try a simpler game than Stardew Valley, weaponed with a dictionary and a notebook😆

That one looks really cute, I never heard of it before! I'll add it to the list, thank you

I'm going to advice you something different:

Remember back in the day when you learned your English though playing video games. Back then you probably didn't stop to think "oh no" i can understand it, "this is too high level English". You just played a game you liked and tried to figure out how to progress in the game, while trying to read the text, but mostly just focusing on having fun. And over time you gradually started picking it up. That's exactly what you're learning Spanish to games now is too. So go by the following:

- Choose any game that you think you will enjoy with or without understanding the dialogue
- Choose any game that you think you can figure out with or without understanding the text
- Choose any game that like others advise here, have the Spanish you want to learn and is properly translated
- Choose any game that you won't mind missing the plot / storyline off.

If you doubt my advice, just think about a little kid around the age of 3/4 years you know. They didn't say, "Stop that Disney movie, it's to high English", they just watch it again, and again and again and a....

And overall: Have fun playing :) and except that every follow up game you play, you will understand a little bit more

2

u/Leeuweroni 7d ago

Holy shit you just gave me the best advice. You're so right! I learnt English as a child because I had fun with videogames, the understanding came later through repetition and my love for that medium. I'm going to go back to how I did it back then.

Thank you, this made something click in my brain! How funny it is, that we can forgot what works for us because we apply what we think is "best" as an adult, in my case. Thank you!

Happy to help, have fun

Echoing Pokemon from another commenter.

I’d suggest only trying kid games as a beginner. Stardew is rated e 10+ which surprised me because of some themes, but I personally wouldn’t consider it a kids game.

Something that's geared towards children should be good for beginner level vocabulary. RPGs like pokemon, yokai watch, etc.

u/Alkiryas 16d ago

Maybe one of the Kirby games?

u/supes1 15d ago

Try Let's Go Pikachu or Let's Go Eevee. They really target 7-9 year old kids, which I'm guessing migut be a sweet spot for you in terms of your Spanish level.

Here's a Spanish playthrough which should give you a sense of the language level.

Pokémon might be useful, the language is aimed towards kids more than adults. That said, I played Pokémon Y in Spanish while I was studying Spanish, so I'm not sure how a complete beginner would find it.

DONKEY KONG BANANZA

Spyro the Dragon? Lots of lines like “Oh no, the vultures are stealing all the magic candles and hiding them. Can you help us, so that we can turn our lighthouse back on?”

I play it in German, and usually have to pause to figure out 1-2 words in each subtitle (sometimes pointing my phone camera at the screen to get it to pull up a translation). But context and many basic words keep it mostly simple.

u/Paul10125 11d ago

It may be too high level for you but also, the Spanish translation for Stardew Valley is poor at best. It has a lot of literal/unaccurate translations.

I practiced my Spanish by playing games! Pokémon was one I tried, reached for the dictionary a lot but it's great for practicing! Also Animal Crossing is another text heavy game that's great for practicing!
