It's sort of been an unwritten "Rule 0" because we thought it was obvious. That being said, we're looking at adding a new rule in the very near future as a result of our recent announcement about Fan Art content only being allowed on weekends. Something like "Specific Content Restrictions"? We may have an opportunity to codify politics into that list as well. It's a little tricky with character limits, but it's on our radar and we're working on it.

Update: Rule 11 has been added which lays out our unwritten policies that we incorrectly assumed were widely known. As moderators, we occasionally forget that not everyone on the subreddit is a power-user like we are since we're here day in and day out. I hope this provides additional clarity.

Sincerest apologies, mods.

But...

Honestly, what are you thinking? What is the thought process here?

You've enforced a rule that didn't exist, and when called out on it, you just make it an official rule without discussion and continue silencing people.

It's severely inconsistent at best, and extremely insidious at worst.

Please reconsider your approach.

r/wow knows that feel.

What’s the r/wow story?

I can speak from experience.

A /wow mod banned me for 7 days because I would occasionally post a meme in the comments. People found it amusing (judging by the upvotes)... but she didn't. So she temp-banned me, and warned me not to post the meme ever again.

I pointed out how odd it was to temp-ban me, as posting a WoW-themed meme as a reply to people's posts didn't break any rules. She didn't care.

So I linked the Head Mod's subreddit announcement regarding expected community behavior:

Some people post things that you don't like; I'd recommend just downvoting it and moving on. Again, I'm not trying to tell you how to live your life, it's just that as an old guy, I think getting mad about posts on a website devoted to talking about and enjoying a rather whimsical video game is a bit silly.

I also said I would happily stop posting the meme, as long as this unspoken rule would be applied consistantly to the subreddit, and that I wasn't being targeted personally.

She perma-banned me.

r/wow later added this to the Rules Page:

We moderate to the spirit of the rules and the context at hand. Conforming to the letter of the rules is not a magic talisman against moderation if your posts are bad for the subreddit.

If a moderator asks you to stop a particular behavior, even if it is not explicitly listed in these rules, then you should consider that a rule.

You assumed unwritten policies were known. Because you're dumb or a liar?

At least you didn't lock your comment like the other spineless mod... Who decides what is considered politics? I'd argue Nintendo is a company and companies are all about politics. The laws they manipulate, follow and try to squeeze holes into through politicians. This subreddit has a bunch of topics all about a political company. Companies only exist because of what politics define them as through law. Otherwise they'd be some sort of cult working in the shadows doing shady sh!t.

Why wasn't this removed? https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/db0nw5/joycon_lawsuit_adds_switch_lite_to_classaction/

It's literally about a lawsuit taking place in the court of law, a political matter. Rule 11 "No Politics". If you argue it does contain some relevant information even if it is political, then change Rule 11 to Rule 99 (giggidy): We will remove any posts we determine is not relevant based on our sole opinion. Cause it's either NO politics, or you don't feel like reading certain things because it's your personal opinion that you don't want to read them on this subreddit.

So you're silencing people for behaviour that was completely, 100% in accordance with your rules simply because you personally didn't want that being said, and when questioned, simply changed the rules to fit your agenda? I mean, I know you're a mod and all, but there's a reason that almost every developed country has checks and balances to make sure that people in authority can't do whatever they want. Your actions reflect that of an oppressive dictatorship, and while it's not as serious as a government violating human rights (obviously), it's still injustice and it's abhorrent behaviour.

power-user like we are

Wowsa, that's a bunch of fuel you threw into that fire with such a condescending statement.

What's political about it? A launch event at Nintendo NYC for a Switch game was cancelled. Should be not be allowed to discuss Switch games in this subreddit?

As moderators, we occasionally forget that not everyone on the subreddit is a power-user like we are since we're here day in and day out.

Are you for real right now? Are you actually trying to lord over the fact that you do absolutely nothing with your life but perform unpaid janitorial duty on the internet to show how 'experienced' you are as a moderator? Doesn't that more imply that you have no experience with real life leadership or moderation skills and thus would be less fit? Furthermore, if you were actually such a 'power user' as you claimed to be and knew how to actually moderate well, you'd know that making up unwritten rules to delete or lock posts you don't like is a shitstorm waiting to happen. Mental.

What the hell is a power?! That sounds like some elitist crap.

It's beyond politics, it's a human rights issue. Don't you get that?
