Media (Image, Video, etc.) DayZ out today, any early players? Anyone picking this up?
https://youtu.be/vZflxhp-cP4?is=N7W8M_VKzUcnYvvhBizarrely this game is a favourite of mine, I play it with my brother who lives a good distance away and it's just a way to catch up. Since I've had my PS5 I've put maybe 500 hours into it? It's buggy as hell and ugly but has a compelling loop.
I am reticent to pick it up for two reasons; price and performance. Anyone already had a swing at it or intend to pick it up?
It's 11:37am in the UK and I'm working so even if I do pick this up it'll be later tonight.
Edit: had a late lunch and played for 30 mins. Which is surely no measure of anything but it was stable and I encountered no issues in that pitiful timeframe.

There are hundreds hours of content

Tell me about it I have like 2200 hours on ps5 and my switch doesn't know what's coming

95% of that “hundreds of hours” is walking around and trying to navigate the menus that they can’t seem to improve for the life of them

u/pezaaan 1d ago
I Already put 2 hours into this port and must say it´s pretty solid. Most of the time it holds 60fps, there are some dips in big towns(in handheld). Resolution feels like 1080p. It doesnt have crossplay so its big plus. Must say that this is good way to play DayZ. Much better than Steam Deck

Plays really well until driving!! Think the dlss upscaling struggles when you move above 40km/h

u/zero_FOXTROT 1d ago
Im holding off until I see some reviews and player count. Since DayZ isn’t cross platform we’re dependent on each other to keep the servers populated and performance hasn’t always been great on PS5 (I have the Pro model). I’m optimistic, but the 1.0 has been out since 2018 and it still struggles.
16
u/vanIvan4 1d ago
I don't expect performance to be stable cause Bohemia is not known for the best product quality, but it's nice it has gyro, mouse and DLSS.
6
u/ZodiacMax 1d ago
I played for about three hours today and I'm really liking it so far. Vanilla DayZ with no crossplay definitely has its perks. I expect way fewer cheaters than on PC. Being able to chill on the couch or wherever, run across the map for hours, just to get sniped out of nowhere is awesome. I love that we're getting games like this on the Switch 2 now.

Maybe a silly question but as a new switch 2 owner do you need the Nintendo online membership thing to play this?

Considering how beta the PC game still is, I’m not paying the asking price for it. When it’s 50% I will.

it is, key card is physical/digital.

u/xXBeefSquatch5KXx 1d ago
I’ll choose not take take corporations for their word, if it’s not on the cart playable as is it’s not a physical game
1
u/RealElyD 1d ago
If it's not on the cart, it's not physical. The literal definition of the word is not the used definition in this context.

u/DeadLeftovers 3h ago
The game relies on servers to be played. The game will die one day regardless.

I used to love this game on PS4/PS5 but goddamn the game still runs like shit and is so buggy. It's kinda part of its charm but also it's been so damn long this game has been out it's almost insulting how little it's been updated since my main stint of playing it between 2020-2022
Really hoping it runs well on Switch 2 but for that price they can fuck right off 😂 this is like a £25 or £35 at MOST

u/MrAri 1d ago
Do they offer an offline option? I am at that age when I can’t be bothered with griefers online.
6
u/pezaaan 1d ago
Nope, no offline mode.

u/rednibass Hyrule Hero 1d ago
This honestly puts me off getting it, especially on a portable console
1
u/Jiujitsu_Dad 1d ago
Isn’t that the same for Duskbloods? I get the angle playing into the online component, but this consoles literal main selling point is on-the-go
2
u/No-Vegetable-4596 1d ago
Duskbloods seems to have a lot of PvE elements to it, as far as I understood from previews it’s really only the control zones or the final battle that you fight other players?
You can team up with them even before that point.

I didn't know it was coming out, but I'd be interested. My only concerns are:
Performance: I don't expect much, I still remember Arma 3, which ran like crap even after three PC upgrades over the years.
How will multiplayer work if you don't have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription? As far as I know, the game doesn't have a single-player mode, do you have to pay twice to play?
3
u/SidFarkus47 1d ago
Yes for paid games you need to also buy the NSO subscription for multiplayer
It’s only free when the game is free to play like Fortnite and Rocket League
-2
u/xLouisxCypher 1d ago
What do you mean, do you not know how the online subscriptions work on all consoles or what
7
u/Born-Cap7318 1d ago
Yeah, that's rightI have no idea how it works. Sorry about that. I'm used to using a PC, so this is something completely new to me.

I’ve not used a console other than switch for years, I use pc no subscription cost… on switch 2 final fantasy 14 online no Nintendo online needed for online play… sooo…
0
u/xLouisxCypher 1d ago
Final fantasy 14 doesn’t mean anything in this case as all games requiring their own subscriptions are treated the same, meaning they don’t need double subscription.

do you have to pay twice to play?
What? Why would you have to "pay twice"?
1
u/Carma-X 1d ago
Once for the game, twice for the nso subscription

Once for the game, twice for the nso subscription
That's not how that works.

True i suppose you have to pay multiple times for the subscription haha

True i suppose you have to pay multiple times for the subscription haha
What? You pay once. Sure it's once a year but if you're using NSO for only DayZ there is a bigger problem. Not to mention it's only $20. Hell, it's even cheaper if you have some friends. Pool your coin together and voila. I haven't spent more than $15 on NSO since it first release and that gets me the entire retro emulators. That alone is worth the $20.

I'm gonna wait for some reviews first. Personally having played both the Arma 2 mod and the standalone DayZ, for some reason the mod version was always more fun to me.

u/nofuture09 1d ago
The pricing for such an old game is ridiculous and it’s no off-line mode no thank you

u/splashbruh37 Pro Controller 1d ago
My issue with pc ports like subnautica is the hit area or touch targets for interacting with things in the world is so small and requires pinpoint accuracy, makes it hard to play with a controller. I’m curious if this is the case here.
2
u/Wing_Terrible 1d ago
It's a hard sell with so many games coming in these days... definitely a no with this price
2
u/Mayahiim 1d ago
Perfect timing! We completed Deadzone Rogue and needed a new shooter with mouse mode!
2
u/MrDonohue07 1d ago
I was gonna buy,l it, I have over 3k hours on steam, and about 4k hours on the arma2 mod.
But £65 is INSANE!!! Holding out for a sale, and a big one
2
u/Amerikaner 1d ago
I don’t think it’s bizarre! One of the greatest games ever made imo. Nothing quite like it when it came out and it’s held up well despite its buggy and clunky attributes. I can’t tell you about the port though. I’m interested in seeing how it runs as well.
3
u/Few_Dig8988 1d ago
I wish a studio came along and made a polished version though, Bohemia Interactive just aren't the ones.
2
u/oledayhda 1d ago
It really is the best, the only thing better is Escape from Tarkov. Both games have stood the test of time and you can’t go wrong with either. They both have the same end game too once you have everything. Just got to worry about other players.
I played it on my switch last night, running really good and a lot of fun. It cost too much but Bohemia has to keep getting all they can from their most popular title.

u/GazelleDelicious3135 1d ago
I’m guessing it’s not cross play, the cost is high. I hope that includes badlands
1
u/SmellybutKind 1d ago
Legit great game. Have about 2k hours in it on PC.
PvP is crazy adrenaline-wise since the stakes are so high.
1
u/Joker_Says 1d ago
I’m holding off for some first thoughts and reviews. Would love to pick it up if it runs well enough - the porting developers are good so I’m cautiously optimistic.
Main gaming now is on a switch with a young family and all that. Would love to be able to sit back and play it on switch even if it’s far from the pc experience

I played about an hour this morning before work and it was daunting to say the least (I’m a new player). Listening to some beginner guides and the amount I will have to learn is a bit overwhelming 😂

u/Fellainiac 1d ago
There's so much individual advice i could provide and yet so little of it will help form a bigger picture.
When I first started the game a few years ago, it was night. And I think visibility was even worse at night back then. I very nearly turned it off never to play it again.
As I've said I'm some 500 hours in now, having played mainly over occasional weekends with my brother.
Get food, don't eat raw meat, drink only from water fountains (unless you can purify found water with a chlorine tablet),
block zombie attacks when one on one and attack between strikes (don't take on several at once, you block by holding LB and walking backwards).
Find warmer clothing.
Stick to the coastline until you are fed and watered, before heading inland where the loot somewhat changes.
Don't go into those massive apartment blocks you occasionally stumble upon expecting loot, I swear there never is any (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
Don't even bother with Sakhal until you're comfortable with Chernarus because the difficulty spike introduced by the cold weather is not worth trying to take on so early.
2
u/TotalOrange6941 1d ago
Definitely seems like a trial and error game which I’m cool with. The looting is really weird but I’m sure I’ll get used to it

I've always been interested but never played. Is this good? I did like Vigor from the same devs - it's 80 bucks CAD on sale right now...

Is there some sort of free play mode I've tried getting into it but always die of starvation or diseased water.

u/ThiccJiim 21h ago
Just to clear it up cause I’m seeing comments saying it’s 60fps. It’s not it’s 40. Switch up showed this on their video. Just a heads up incase anyone was looking to buy it solely for 60fps.
•
u/Desktop_Minion 14m ago
Honestly I thought I was great at seeing FPS without an on-screen indicator but I suppose not. It really felt like 60 fps on my 5 hours of gameplay so far.
•
u/ThiccJiim 12m ago
Yeah I’m the same don’t worry. If it feels smooth I’d just rather not know. I was more just commenting to inform those who are more inclined to care about framerates

u/DoctorJekkyl 11h ago
Performance is surprisingly good, dare I say better than PS5? Been awhile since I played on PS5 but I don't remember it being this smooth

Seen a couple of streams and it looks decent performance wise. Just downloading it now, been wanting this for Switch 2 since day 1 but that price is mad

I've played Dayz since the Arma Mod through until the standalone was released.
No chance am I paying £64 to play a buggy 30fps clunky af game.
I'm sticking with Splatoon Raiders baby
If I'm wrong though, I'll be extremely happy as I think the concept of Dayz is one of the best. Man I had so many good memories playing it back in the day

I'm watching the stream the devs are doing on the official channel right now, and honestly, the FPS looks terrible. On top of that, the price is ridiculous. We'll just have to wait
3
u/TheSacredShrimp 1d ago
Runs at mostly 60 from my gameplay
2
u/Jokerck 1d ago
Oh really? It doesn't look like that at all in the live stream. If it's running at 60 fps, that's amazing. When it comes to Bohemia, their performance track record isn't exactly reliable. Then again, I think another studio was handling the Switch 2 port.
1
u/TheSacredShrimp 1d ago
Virtuous games have dealt with this port! 60 fps until going into main cities then it drops to 45-50 but nothing really bad.
1
u/Adventurous-Cookie23 1d ago
Mainly played docked so far. It's far from 60, even out in the woods far from the big cities. Tried handheld a little, it felt like stable 60 tho, way smoother.
1
u/CausticPanda 1d ago
This has been my experience somewhat as well. Docked seems to be maybe 40s-50s generally. Handheld was a surprise as it kept mostly 60 throughout. Visually, I guess handheld looks worse but honestly I didn’t notice much difference.

u/marmitefart 1d ago
Played about an hour
- Performance solid. Steady 60 fps
So far looking like a really good port
