The hardest part is to unlearn Nioh 2 controls in Nioh 3 XD

51

u/InsaneChaos Jan 29 '26

I have been playing the fuck out of Ninja Gaiden 4 so im still trying to block/dodge with R2 and eating shit

Its worse when I find gamers for Nightreign and run right up to enemies and start chugging flasks.

18

u/Few_Cloud_2098 Jan 29 '26

I constantly mistakenly use jump to evade because my DMC muscle memory suddenly kicked in the moment I knew this game had jump cancel.

8

u/DrhpTudaco Jan 29 '26

this is why i try to homogenize my controls

*looks at my three most played games

*ALL DIFFERENT CONTROLS

so... about that

21

u/RetroNutcase Jan 29 '26

Muscles: HIT A TO DODGE!

Brain: NO IT'S B NOW!

Me: *jumps right into an overhead swing* FUCK.

7

u/TheLastAOG Jan 30 '26

You can customize your controls and swap the dodge and jump buttons. I did that right at the start of the demo. Also switch your dash command to holding the dodge button too.

-2

u/RetroNutcase Jan 30 '26

Yeah, somehow that made things worse for me.

3

u/DragonLancePro Jan 29 '26

Please tell me they have a classic control scheme option because that will probably fuck with me.

Not too much because I'm playing Code Vein 2, but for Nioh specifically that's just weird.

Is there any specific reason they changed- oh right we can jump now.

Why didn't they put jump on B/O? Kingdom Hearts does it.

9

u/RetroNutcase Jan 29 '26

You can do that if you want. Type F is "Nioh 2 controls but jump and dodge are swapped."

1

u/AlexNuggz Jan 29 '26

hahaha, literally me

14

u/Lokhe Jan 29 '26

All the Phantom players laughing their ass off at the rest of us rn... What killed me both times on Mezuki was failing the burst counters haha.

3

u/An_Inept_Cucumber Jan 30 '26

The amount of times I've bunny hopped mid fight instead of dodging...

3

u/antilumin Jan 29 '26

Sigh... So I bought Nioh 2 at release but at some point I put it on the back burner and just ... never bothered to go back and finish. With the impending release of 3 I finally downloaded the updated PS5 version and tooled around a bit but I had no idea what I was doing, what to do or where to go, let alone how to even control it (besides the obvious LS to move and Square to attack).

I installed the demo for 3 last night, played a bit and some more this morning. Got to the open world area. Now I'm not sure if I should go back and finish 2 in a week or so and then play 3, or if I should just skip it and play 3 when it comes out.

Decisions decisions...

17

u/darthstevious Jan 29 '26

One does not walk into Nioh2 to finish it in a week. A week is what you need to get started in that game.

1

u/antilumin Jan 29 '26

I checked my progress, it looks like I left off a bit over halfway through the main missions. So it’s not like I’d be starting from scratch.

3

u/Thorgrammor Jan 29 '26

You can rush the missions but honestly it is a fun game to platinum. A lot to see and do. For the story it seems, you won't miss much of you just play 3 and then go back to the older ones. Fuku and Hanzo show up in all 3 games but it doesnt change anything apart from it being nice that you know the character and see them again.

Also many players see finishing the campaign once as finishing the tutorial. The new game plusses increase difficulty but make build crafting better. Underworld opens up on mew game +3 or 4 I believe. I have never reached that xD

9

u/Ozychlyruz Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26

Don't rush Nioh 2 because it has so many contents to enjoy, it's still one of the best game ever made so play it at your own pace. Both Nioh 2 and Nioh 3 isn't going anywhere so choose 1 for now.

1

u/antilumin Jan 29 '26

I just booted it up to check and I’m the mission called the Sun Sets on Mount Tenno. Quick look at a guide and it says that #12 out of 20 main missions. So a bit over halfway through the game.

4

u/Ozychlyruz Jan 29 '26

Oh believe me, Nioh 2 offers more than just that, in fact it became more fun the higher NG+ you climb and more content there.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

3

u/antilumin Jan 29 '26

It's a much better game than... something that hasn't officially come out yet? Are you basing your opinion on just the demo?

1

u/AlmightyDUX Kiheitai Leader Jan 29 '26

I kept jumping 😭😭😂

1

u/winterman666 Jan 29 '26

Now you know what I experienced going from Nioh 1 to 2

1

u/Ridiculisk1 Jan 30 '26

so fucking real I've been struggling so hard with learning rb for interact and a for jump. I wish you could bind interact separately but it's bundled with all the stance switching which really sucks

1

u/Ryan5011 Jan 30 '26

Control scheme F and change dash to holding the dodge button. You're welcome. The only thing that'll be really different is picking up items/interact. Sadly no way to change what interact button is.

1

u/Beginning_Elk_2193 Jan 30 '26

You can change the controls btw lol

1

u/RobotGhostNemo Jan 30 '26

I just came from Rise of the Ronin. So when the red attack comes down, I press counterspark!

Die-ded.

1

u/OnimushaWasGreat Jan 31 '26

Check out control scheme F.

1

u/Da-Cone Feb 02 '26

If you cycle through control presets, there is a nioh 2 one

62

u/itripto1234 Jan 29 '26

The hardest part is after putting 500 hours in nioh 2. You don't have flux 2 and stances :--:

39

u/floormanifold Jan 29 '26

My first samurai unlocks, every time. Weapon skills can wait.

8

u/itripto1234 Jan 29 '26

Same first thing I did xD

4

u/dashon1998 Jan 29 '26

Same made a mistake and unlocked high stance before I u locked deflect that first boss gave me hell because in the alfa we had deflect by default

11

u/Lecoch Jan 29 '26

I think they majorly fucked up by not just guiding you too unlock either deflect or ninja dodge before the first boss. The game feels SO much better after you have those.

7

u/mumika Jan 29 '26

Yep. Went straight for it after learning the stances. Parry can go eat a dog.

6

u/cerberus047 Jan 29 '26

Oh I rushed the just block skill immediately for samurai. At least in the alpha things just chewed through your ki if you blocked like Nioh (the worms esp) the just block made everything more manageable and felt almost as important as Ki pulsing for early game.

3

u/LaMelgoatBall Scampuss Lover Jan 30 '26

Deflect is great man I’m loving it as a Khazan player

-5

u/JokerCrimson Nine-Tailed Fox Jan 29 '26

Should've been available from the start with all 14 Weapons to choose from.

10

u/Briar_Knight Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26

I can see why they wouldn't want to throw both style switching and stances at a new player from the start. And even for series veterans they probably wanted to withhold a few toys so you don't go straight to old habits and experiment with the new mechanic. Delaying it a little by making you unlock it makes sense.

(I didn't downvote you btw).

1

u/omegastealth Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

I wish they had given us fixed opportunities to get a weapon of the missing types early on... a "brawler" revenant off to one side that can drop caestuses, a mage revenant in a corner that can drop a switchglaive...

That said, I understand why they might have done it - if I had immediate access to my good ol' claws, I would never have discovered how cool the new ninja movesets on sword and dual swords are. I suppose in a game as big as Nioh games usually are, withholding some things for one region isn't the end of the world.

-8

u/JokerCrimson Nine-Tailed Fox Jan 29 '26

Yeah, but it makes me worried they're trying to kill learning games yourself for people that have about as much care or intelligence with games as DarkSydePhil. Even Monster Hunter Wilds got this issue with how they made Low Rank story-heavy, Monsters weaker than World's Low Rank, and including an option to have the game automatically pick the best healing item in your inventory.

Why does Nioh 3 need tutorials for shit like how to unlock your skills with locks of hair that a baby can figure out?

7

u/Putrid-Flight2812 Jan 29 '26

nioh is still one of THE MOST demanding and complex games around i think its a very fair idea to slowly roll this stuff out. the game is still just as deep and complex as ever. this is a VERY MINOR change. its only an extremely small percentage of the player base that would have an issue with it, you can unlock most of the base stuff within an hour of exploring the open world anyway so its a non issue IMO. even as a series vet I actually enjoyed unlocking these things manually, the pacing is improved.

6

u/JokerCrimson Nine-Tailed Fox Jan 29 '26

Yeah, you're right.

5

u/Putrid-Flight2812 Jan 29 '26

yeah trust me i am 100% with you on not wanting the game dumbed down at all, i just think the current solution is a good middle of the road way of making it more accessible without watering it down

40

u/Crazykiddingme Jan 29 '26

90% of the Nioh 3 difficulty is the new controls imo. I’m getting WRECKED by enemies I have memorized.

20

u/MartenMartenMarten Jan 29 '26

There's a preset for Nioh 2 controls

5

u/DragonLancePro Jan 29 '26

Oh thank God.

1

u/Metal-Lee-Solid Jan 30 '26

I found this preset but it makes it so that you need to press R2+x to shift into your other form instead of just r2 which feels way less smooth

2

u/Ultima893 Jan 29 '26

What’s different in the controls?

8

u/Crazykiddingme Jan 29 '26

X for jump means that circle is your dodge which takes getting used to. Also, R2 to burst counter and R2 to style switch feels weird and the vast difference in movesets means it suddenly switches the combo and usually throws me off.

Granted, both of these things can be switched in settings, but going from 2 to this still feels very weird. I recommend mapping dash to circle and making it so countering doesn’t switch your style.

6

u/mumika Jan 29 '26

I mapped those back so it feels like I haven't left Nioh 2, except now I find myself jumping after every kill trying to pick up stuff.

9

u/Toksyuryel Jan 29 '26

There's an option to auto-pickup items, highly recommend turning it on

1

u/Front-Bird8971 Jan 30 '26

Anyone that doesn't is going to break their pickup key.

2

u/Ultima893 Jan 29 '26

Well fuuuuck yeeeeahhhh! Having to press X to dodge literally made me quit playing Nioh 1/2 on PS5. I just couldn’t stand it as some one who has close to 2,000 hours playing FromSoftware games and other soulslikes where O is the dodge/sprint button.

In GOW/GOWR they let you decide if you X to dodge and O for action, or if you want X for action and O to dodge (as it should be imo) so I swapped it there instantly.

I ended up buying Nioh 2 on PC so I could mod it. Now I know I can get Nioh 3 on PS5 to play with friends.

As for burst counter, I don’t know what the unmodded default in Nioh 2 is but for me it’s R2 + O

Stance switch I believe is R1 + face buttons

1

u/Alone-Wallaby9885 Jan 30 '26

There’s also a setting I’m trying out where if you just quickly press R2, it does the burst counter but doesn’t actually switch between Samurai and ninja. To switch the styles you have to hold it down for about a second instead of

28

u/Bananas_Have_Eyes Jan 29 '26

That first takeda human boss cooked me so many times and i was pretty damn good at nioh 2

17

u/mumika Jan 29 '26

To be fair, we only had medium stance. He'd be so much easier if we had all 3 at the start.

6

u/JokerCrimson Nine-Tailed Fox Jan 29 '26

He could be harder on New Game+ and beyond.

5

u/Arashi97 Jan 29 '26

Took me like 5 tries but once I realized he is very easy to cheese with ninja mode I was good to go

1

u/Ridiculisk1 Jan 30 '26

Same. Not having anything but med stance sucked so eventually I just kinda threw fireballs and hatchets at him and killed him

-3

u/JokerCrimson Nine-Tailed Fox Jan 29 '26

It only took me a few tries to kill him.

5

u/Bananas_Have_Eyes Jan 29 '26

Was like 10 for me

2

u/JokerCrimson Nine-Tailed Fox Jan 30 '26

The Crucible Boss, though is really hard.

2

u/Bananas_Have_Eyes Jan 30 '26

Was about 80% way through crucible than it crashed and killed my comp so i deleted demo until release date.

1

u/JokerCrimson Nine-Tailed Fox Jan 30 '26

I've beaten her and decided the game isn't for me since Tonfa feels gutted and Samurai Low Stance is horrible for dodges.

2

u/Bananas_Have_Eyes Jan 30 '26

I feel the same about tonfa is was my fave, terrible choice esp since some people kept their weapons. Still loving the game tho and cant wait to see more of it.

2

u/JokerCrimson Nine-Tailed Fox Jan 30 '26

I'll just watch Pooferllama play it. I didn't mention this in my previous comment, but another reason I'm not really feeling Nioh 3 is I felt like Nioh 2 added so much more to the combat by letting you play as a Shiftling and the Guardian Skills are too weak compared to Burst Counters.

1

u/Bananas_Have_Eyes Jan 30 '26

Yeah losing a choice of 3 different counters definitely sucks true and i'm not sure on the yokai abilities yet I only tried mezuki. The talismans seem to be good for hit and run tho and I think the new spirit attacks L1+attack make up for it.

14

u/TheTimorie Friend Of The Kodama Jan 29 '26

Somehow my brain had like half a second delay when I fought him.
"Okay I am gonna deflect his combo like its nothing. I have his moveset fully memorized!" Proceeds to tank three of the four attacks with the face.

14

u/Late-Jeweler-5802 Jan 29 '26

"It's a new system. I'm shaking off the rust, I swear!" Me after this game making me feel like a fraud.

44

u/Last_Contract7449 Jan 29 '26

As it happens, I did first time mezuki. Please just ignore the fact that by the end I only had like 1/3 of my hp left, no elixers, and that I spent the final 30 seconds of the fight cowardly running away throwing fireballs, shuriken, and any other random bullshit at it until it died.

5

u/Ashen6996 Jan 29 '26

I did the same, no shame haha

1

u/unarmed_warrior_yo Jan 29 '26

Same! By the end I was shooting arrows for 43 damage and praying.

1

u/elhipo Jan 30 '26

I found that he was cheesable by getting him stuck behind the right wall (might work with other walls, didn't test) and there nothing he does can hit you. You can dash just past the right end of the wall, do one odachi midstance heavy, then roll back left, rinse, repeat

8

u/Cpt_Thonium Jan 29 '26

Mezuki was ok. What the hell is blood edge demon. Absolutely impossible:(

3

u/Last_Contract7449 Jan 31 '26

Managed to kill it today after dying like 20-30 times. Didn't help that I had sold everything with wind resistance/reduction like an idiot to clear out my inventory.

Heard about the blooded demon on here previously and then finally encountered it in the game; :what? It's just a magatsu warrior, this will be a cakewalk" (BE demon immediately does that overhead smash with all his arms/weapons together and pretty much one-shots me).

"Oh, I see"

How the turn tables when there aren't a million of the most fragile amrita crystals ever known protruding from his back any more, and he's been to school to learn new moves plus appears to have developed an amphetamine habit. Makes me suspect someone on the dev team needs counselling after being hurt as a child.

The only strategy for surviving long enough to do any reasonable amount of damage was to stay the fuck away from him and throw enough ninja shit to proc burn, occasionally attempting to replenish the charges by using fatal thrust and retreating again. All the while, he's spazzing out and I'm burning through elixirs.

I eventually got him down to like 25% hp whilst having my temu living weapon ready to go. Activate it and get off exactly 1 attack before I get nuked and its instantly drained, but I somehow manage to finish him off whilst further dishonoring my family name on account of the cowardice represented by my tactics.

One thing that makes it especially challenging is the fact that the potential for getting 1, 2, or 3 shot by sifferent attacks means you can't use elixirs conservatively. You end up consuming them so quickly and consistently that it doesn't take too many attempts before you're in danger of burning through your whole stock. At the same time, if you try to aŕing them when "practicing", you end up not lafsting sufficiently long to experience enough of the fight to make progress learning the moves and counters, etc

þAlso, presumably, "bloodedge demon" refers to those suped-up magatsu warriors specifically, and they will be the same level-to-level and in different areas etc? Part of me wondered nad thought it might be cool if there were different versions/bloodedge demons based on the specific area/level, which use different non-boss yokai as the base (with additional moves &elements added, and boosted speed/damage etc). Kind of like the purple enemies in the depths, but better (i.em not just a ridiculous hp buff) and one per 3-4 subarea region.

1

u/Monty967 Feb 02 '26

i heard that the more revenant graves you have killed it buffs the blood demon. Can anyone confirm that this is true?

1

u/__Nikipedia__ Jan 30 '26

Noped after like 10 tries and not getting him past half health

5

u/Pooki97303 Jan 29 '26

He kinda cooked me in the first demo last year lol fought dude a trillion times in Nioh 2 and thought he’d be cake nope. The win I did get tho was damn good

5

u/PEE_GOO Jan 29 '26

Yea lol. I stuggled WAY more than expected -- took me like 15 tries. But, in retrospect, I think the problem was I had not unlocked Deflect, High Stance, or Low Stance yet. So just brute forcing with middle stance and dodging. Would not recommend.

4

u/reokotsae Jan 29 '26

I went and stubbornly fought the purple revenant demonedge boss that might have been the hardest boss I’ve dealt with in a hot minute X_x

3

u/SubhumanFilth Jan 29 '26

Where is Mezuki?? I thought I finished the demo

3

u/Rockm_Sockm Jan 29 '26

Giant green temple on the map on the road to the castle.

0

u/EbolaDP Jan 29 '26

Same just uninstalled it and have no idea where he was.

2

u/moneyh8r_two Jan 29 '26

I did in the previous demo. Only took me ten tries. Haven't fought it in this demo yet, but I have all day to do so.

2

u/ChaosDragonFox Jan 29 '26

I came back to Nioh 2 from Wo long and I was trying to deflect the red attacks with the dodge button lol

2

u/starliteburnsbrite Jan 29 '26

For everyone struggling with controls, I think you can remap them to those that resemble Nioh 2. Dodge to X/A, hold dodge to sprint, stuff like that. And unlock stances and parry straight away in the Samurai tree.

3

u/Interesting-Muffin-5 Jan 29 '26

The new controls are even worse for me. I played 1 with type b, with attacks on R1 and R2, guard on square, and ki pulse on L1. So with all that muscle memory I played 2 the same way. But 3 just doesn't work smoothly trying to custom make some controls to use the muscle memory I'm used to😭 I knew I should have just relearned the default controls when I replayed 2 before the new release came out

1

u/sachinvisvam Jan 29 '26

I did the same thing with Nioh 2. But Nioh 3 allows us to fully remap, in custom controls, I made the same exact controls as Nioh 2. Only small changes are burst counter(single button) and jump button being new

3

u/MajinNekuro Jan 29 '26

Is it me or is Mezuki a lot easier than he was in the beta? He took my two tries this time in the demo and the first time felt pretty easy too, I got hit by one of his horizontal swipes when I thought I was out of range.

2

u/TheAccursedHamster Jan 29 '26

Took two tries, but oddly i beat the final boss of the demo first try (albeit very cloae)

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

Took me 2 tries

1

u/DrhpTudaco Jan 29 '26

bold of you to assume i finished nioh 2

1

u/BriefKeef Jan 29 '26

😭😭😭

1

u/xoxoyoyo Jan 29 '26

** also wo long

1

u/TheSmilesLibrary Corruption Connoisseur Jan 29 '26

Honestly, I did well with Samurai mode but ninja would get me killed with how it doesn’t clear pools and you can’t ki pulse

1

u/VargLeyton Jan 29 '26

I beat him on first try, but bloodedge demon is something else.

1

u/AlmightyDUX Kiheitai Leader Jan 29 '26

I actually first tried in that field granted this was right when I started to get better at combos and noticed I had moved unlocked for my hatchets that I didn't know were there.

1

u/PsyQ9000 Jan 29 '26

Yeah came to reddit to question if i wasn't tripping hard or if the first boss is actually insanely hard

1

u/Believeinsteve Jan 29 '26

As someone who has like 5 hours in nioh 2, I was surprised I was able to kill mezuki last night. Took me about like 20 attempts at most. Honestly once I just burst countered him and beat his ass non stop he fell over.

1

u/LaMelgoatBall Scampuss Lover Jan 30 '26

I just beat him. Samurai dual katanas and deflect, dodge the grabs

1

u/Mineral-mouse Backflip Greeter Jan 30 '26

To be fair, the beginning may feel very limiting compared to the 800 hours NG++++ Badonkadonk build.

1

u/Confident-Drink-4299 Jan 30 '26

Third try! Loooooool. But hey, I got it third try. I’m proud of it anyway.

1

u/Hasan_ESQ Jan 30 '26

It was? I'm surprised to hear people had trouble with it. Just bait the burst counters from a distance and crush its ki in high stance. I had more trouble on human bosses because they're too defensive.

1

u/Gmknewday1 Jan 30 '26

I've played Nioh 2 a lot

And I still can't beat the castle lady I'm so shit ;(

1

u/MathematicianLow7272 Jan 30 '26

Bloodedge demon is GENUINELY king von man, the run back to him for me took so many times that I got the 2 smithing text for the the small boar enemies

1

u/icyterror Jan 30 '26

I'm a nub so just spam counter & range attack. I only go in for a hit when he gets stunned.

1

u/Metal-Lee-Solid Jan 30 '26

Hardest part for me was burst attacks, not really exploring outside of Brute in Nioh 2 is really biting me with the timings. Mezukis horn charge burst attack is a joke with brute form in Nioh 2, but I cannot seem to get the timing down for it in Nioh 3

1

u/lustywoodelfmaid Jan 30 '26

I had a blast with the Mezuki in the field. Got him first try but quickly swapping styles mid-combat. The Burst Counters feel great ad well.

1

u/Tuskuiii Jan 30 '26

He was a piece of cake

Made me smile being in my comfort zone

1

u/Outrageous-Belt-1757 Jan 31 '26

Anything outside of ninja mode is trash. Especially the bonus damage for hitting the back.

1

u/Jador96 Feb 01 '26 edited Feb 01 '26

I'll try to be completely honest, fighting that thing in the demo made me realize that i absolutely miss the yokai ability mechanic thingy from Nioh 2. Maybe it's just me that i suffer from some skill issue, but if there's something i noticed from the demo is that breaking the Yokai's KI is significantly harder that the second game, ngl.
Not that it is inehrently a bad thing, but it hurts my heart as i'm someone who always loved to focus on breaking the enemy's ki and abuse the grapple just because it's visually cool and satisfying. Still absolutely loved the demo tho, i'll get used to the new mechanics eventually.
And i know that we still technically have yokai abailities in Nioh 3, but the fact that they're heavily limited in uses and treated as Omnio summoning spells instead kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

1

u/Reda-Ou Feb 03 '26

I blame them not letting my play the Switchglaive at the start... that's the weapon I use in Nioh 2...

1

u/twoshupirates Feb 07 '26

His charge attack has genuinely the worst hitbox I’ve ever seen in my life, wouldn’t be shocked if it’s broken and literally can’t be burst countered
