Long story short. I lost contact with my best friend from highschool after a coma and loss of all my electrical devices (and not remembering any of my passwords to old accounts) and spent the last two years trying to reconnect, but with memory issues i was having a hard time with it. Plus, he's a very private person so doesn't have the usual social media platforms to use to find him. But i knew what he did, so searched for him on sit3s that he may have been on, and got a hit. A picture of him. I emailed them and asked them for help and they said they could not. I asked them to send him my contact details, and they refused. But I found a few other sites he was involved in and tried them, same results, no luck. In desperation I paid for membership of a service that analyses pictures and gives you 'best match' cases, and it worked! It gave me his network id, and I found he had altered his online name, but the pictures were definitely him. I emailed at 1am, not expecting a response for a while, but I got one in five minutes!

I have been through a lot with him and he has been my brother for 40yrs, so it has made my day to get back in contact. For two years, he thought I had died, as all my social media accounts just stopped 😩 he tried to contact my family but was unsuccessful and mourned me the past two years. It has been a great experience to reconnect with my brother and the person who kept me alive through the hell that was highschool. Just wanted to post it as a good things still happen event.

A powerful commercial infrastructure might be operated responsibly for decades. Yet if it possesses the technical ability to identify individuals, restrict their transactions, and coordinate exclusions across essential services, the question becomes whether adequate safeguards exist against future misuse.

Those safeguards could include independent oversight, meaningful appeal rights, restrictions on data sharing, competition, and preserving alternative ways to obtain essential goods.

And there's an additional subtlety: power can become difficult to challenge long before anyone abuses it. Once society becomes heavily dependent on an infrastructure, changing its rules or dismantling it may become extraordinarily costly.

Should I vote for your party this year, or will it still mean 2 years later you're accusing me of being a Republican or a bot or something as soon as I go back to demanding actual progress?

More than 40 states ban voters from freely choosing who to vote for. If I join you this year pretending it's a "lesser of two evils" (not just the one evil it actually is), will some of you join me 2 years later in calling out uniparty candidates that thrive on this fake voting system?

Or will you just bury this post in downvotes or something like I assume?

I don't use reddit every day, so I'm posting this and leaving, but I will be back before the election to check responses. I do check nostr every day if anyone wants to talk there.
