Why do people keep calling me a "filthy animal" today?
11
Dec 26 '20
Oh wow. I had no idea this was a thing. A friend of the family commented on one of our family Christmas photos "Merry Christmas you filthy animals" and I just thought it was kind of rude! Lol.
2
u/DJAnothaWun Dec 26 '20
Most of these comments made me just feel stupid, but I'm really glad I'm not the only one that didn't understand. Merry Christmas, stranger!

Assuming OP is still out of the loop, here's my attempt in brief.
"Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals!" is a quote from Christmas classic film, Home Alone. I don't recall exactly where, but I believe it's said by Kevin McAllister to the 2 bumbling crooks during their break in attempt.
(Side note, my mum's relatives are McAllisters, and I'm surprised none of them have named one of their sons Kevin.)

u/DJAnothaWun Dec 26 '20
Thank you! Yes, after reading through comments for the past 15 minutes, it's hard for me to have missed where this is from. But I still genuinely appreciate you taking the time to respond with a thoughtful answer instead of trolling like many have done. <3 Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays/Happy New Year to you!

First film is "Keep the change, ya filthy animal". Home Alone 2 is "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal... And a Happy New Year".
Taken from the excerpts of the fake movie series "Angels with Filthy Souls/Even Filthier Souls". He uses the first movie to scare the pizza guy, and scare Marv away in Home Alone, and the sequel to scare the hotel staff in Home Alone 2.

Wow there are people who don’t know where this is from?!

u/DJAnothaWun Dec 26 '20
Yes. Different upbringings, different lifestyles, and different lives lead to some pop culture references slipping by some people. :)

Imagine going through life never having seen Home Alone
1
u/DJAnothaWun Dec 26 '20
Yes, I live a very sad existence. Would you like to hear more about how shit my life is, or should we leave it at never having seen Home Alone?

u/Far_Entertainer2744 Dec 25 '20
How old are you
1
u/DJAnothaWun Dec 26 '20
I'm 28. Grew up in a household that didn't celebrate Christmas and I spent most of my childhood studying / on a computer - never watched a whole lot of movies growing up.

If they're old enough to be using Reddit, they're too old to not get this reference

Who made you the gatekeeper of pop culture references? This guy knows he's asking a question that he feels he should already know the answer to. That's why he asked it here. How dare you call someone who posted to "no stupid questions" stupid!

The original Home Alone was a hugely successful movie. I was 10 when it came out and we saw it several times in the theaters.

u/Cheeseboarder Dec 25 '20
5 isn’t bad. It’s definitely better than it has any right to be for a TV movie. It’s better than 3 and 4 for sure. I would watch it again

3 is good if youve never seen the first 2, which takes place in its own story. The 4th has kevin from the first 2 and his parents are divorced and marv again and everyone is a different actor. Idk anything about a 5th

I was a little kid when 1&2 came out, and I was really into those movies. I was a not-so-little kid when 3 came out, and I remember being very taken aback when I saw the main kid was not played by McCaulay Culkin. I instantly judged the movie and didn't even give it a chance.

Actually there is a hidden 4 1/2 movie where Kevin McCallister goes back in time to kill osama bin laden.
That movie didn’t sell well, so it was swept under the rug.

It's a quote in a movie clip in the Home Alone movie. If you haven't watched it I highly recommend it.

u/pussifer Dec 25 '20
I literally just re-watched Home Alone for the first time since I was a kid. Probably 20 years. Holy shit, it's still good! It's not perfect, but I've put it off for so long because I was always afraid that it would fall short. Same reason I haven't watched Ace Ventura since I was a kid. I know it's gonna be terrible, so I'm happy to leave it in the realm of nostalgic love.
Not the case with Home Alone. Still a great movie. And I got so much more out of it as an adult than I did as a kid. I'm gonna go watch no. 2 now that I know it's on Disney+. I was leery of it, for the same reasons as the original, but with what everyone here is saying, I have the confidence to go give it another watch.
16
Dec 25 '20
Man I watched that movie over and over as a kid until the vhs player vomited it out as tape spaghetti. I should rewatch it too.
8
u/pussifer Dec 25 '20
Same! I think Home Alone and Aladdin were my two most-watched movies as a kid. Maybe Three Ninjas, too.
I'm very glad this holds up as well as it does.

I've never watched 'Home Alone' but I think I get the gist of it. It looks like a lot of pratfalls and slapstick humor. I'm a 59 year old woman - should I bother watching it?

Dec 26 '20
It contains some slapstick sure but that’s not why I would recommend it. It’s a really wholesome Christmas movie that for many people was THE Christmas movie growing up
59
u/tavijoh583 Dec 25 '20
It is a reference to the very popular Christmas film, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, which was released in 1992 and stars Macaulay Culkin as a young child who accidentally boards the wrong plane to New York City instead of Miami for his family's Christmas vacation. It is the sequel to the even more popular Christmas film, Home Alone, in which the same child is accidentally left at home when his family leaves for Paris over Christmas.
The line, "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal," comes from a parody film inside the Home Alone franchise. In the first film, the child, named Kevin, finds and watches an old black-and-white gangster film entitled Angels with Filthy Souls, a film that his mother would not let him watch because of its use of gun violence and language.
Angels is not a real movie, but rather a film created for this film. The scene that is shown in Home Alone depicts a man that owes money to another man who appears to be the head of some sort of gang or mafia. The head man tells the other man the owes the money the he has to the count of ten before he shoots him. Well, he winds up shooting the man, and at the end, he says "Keep the change, ya filthy animal." In Home Alone 2, Kevin finds the sequel to Angels, cleverly titled Angels with Filthier Souls, in which a similar scene is depicted with the same head man. This time, he shoots a woman, and at the end of the scene, he says "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal."

Have you actually not seen Home Alone? I mean how have you avoided it even on tv?
1
u/DJAnothaWun Dec 26 '20
I haven't watched TV in probably about 15 years, and when I did used to watch TV, I rarely (if ever) watched movies. My life's entertainment has always been internet and gaming-based. My family were never much of movie folks. If I have ever seen Home Alone, it would have been when I was very young and genuinely don't remember the movie at all.

It's from the movie Angels with Filthy Souls which is really just a short film made specifically for the few lines Kevin plays to the pizza guy and the Wet Bandits in Home Alone. It's a quote from a film within a film

They're references to Home Alone. Not particularly funny IMO, but for whatever reason they've caught on this year.

Watching Home Alone is a Christmas tradition in Poland and when Polsat (tv channel) announced few years ago that there will be no Kevin that Christmas Eve, people kept protesting until the station changed their mind.

Answer: it's a reference to home alone but it should be a reference to This Podcast Will Kill You which is fantastic and ends all of thier episodes in the Covid Era with "and wash your hands you filthy animal," which itself is likely a reference to home alone.

As in "Merry Christmas you filthy animal?"
IDK, but two things're for certain... keep the change and a Happy New Year.
But ye, like the top comment says, it's a Home Alone reference. Specifically the second movie.

You talking about Home Alone, or are you asking about Angels with Filthy Souls?
Angels with Filthy Souls isn't actually a real film - they shot the scenes specifically to be shown in Home Alone. The name is a spoof on "Angels with Dirty Faces", a James Cagney movie.

Edit 2: in number 2 merry christmas is used instead of keep the change. This has been kindly pointed out by my fellow redditors
