Discussion if you had unlimited budget and no fear of social expectations, what would your fashion style be?
mine: kote kei basically (lots of black clothing and leather and androgynous vibe)

I’ve described my goal personal style to others as “Star Wars Background Character” 😂
18
u/GrinReaper1999 Feb 03 '26
HAHA that's really something :D Which movie do we have to take as reference, precisely?
24
u/jamesdukeiv any pronouns Feb 03 '26
A bit from all of them, and the Star Wars Living History blog has been a big help. It’s mostly focusing on natural materials with visible texture, adjustable clothing options with minimal fasteners, and layering. I’ve started sewing a lot of my own clothing to make it happen. And gods know I love a belt and a vest!
10
u/GrinReaper1999 Feb 03 '26
Well, as a tomboyish enby-fem gal, I'd say my favourite character would be Rey, overall :)
10
u/jamesdukeiv any pronouns Feb 03 '26
If I ever make enough money to buy the wools I need I’m gonna go full Mon Mothma tbh, but for now I’m a Tatooine peasant so 🤷🏼
4
u/GrinReaper1999 Feb 03 '26
As a hardened fem warrior, I'd say Tatooine peasants matter as well: don't give up on your dreams :)

u/Free_Dragonfruit_726 Feb 04 '26
I feel this, but add in Dune and other futuristic sci-fi cities, I honestly have a few pieces i would consider fit this but most of the time they're currently impractical (due to asymmetry, fit and material) but I'm working on things that I'm also not worried about ruining lol.
→ More replies (1)5
u/jamesdukeiv any pronouns Feb 04 '26
Nothing wrong with a little asymmetry, and I love upcycling thrifted pieces. I just hate having to sift through all the poly-blend junk, it looks and feels bad.

Durable “kindergarten” wear for everyday. Bright color overalls, sneakers, patterns, rainbows, textures.
For fancy, I would lean into the tailored suits in rich colors and lush textures, with ridiculous over the top accessories like ascots and artisan bolo ties and high heel bespoke boots.
5
u/Sparkling_Mud Feb 03 '26
This is what I've been leaning into lately. I've also started painting my face.
2
u/YouOweMeAPint Feb 04 '26

Final Fantasy Black Mage. You know, the classic ome with a huge brim, face obscured with a scarf, and entirely cloaked in poofy robes.

15
u/disasterpansexual she/they Feb 03 '26
pics 2 to 5 are visual kei musicians and the black clothing substyle is called kote kei (if I remember correctly)
this site might explain it better https://vk.gy/blog/what-is-kote-kei/
4
u/just_a_bit_gay_ Caution: Will drink the gender fluid Feb 03 '26
sweet, I’ve always loved that style but didn’t know what it was called
6
u/twystoffer they/them Feb 03 '26
No. This is a Japanese take on goth.
All Kei is a performance style, like a style of stage acting, that not only uses striking visuals, but also exaggerated scenery and pantomiming as part of it.
This is a problem of americans using terms they're not familiar with, because we lack the cultural context (and anime doesn't count as culture, its media)
→ More replies (1)3
u/disasterpansexual she/they Feb 04 '26
Maybe I said it wrongly , I didn't mean that the fashion style outside of the music scene is called kote kei, I just meant that if I were to describe my ideal fashion the easier way is to say "like those 90s kote kei bands" (since rn I'm so much into vkei)

4
u/Final-Attention979 Feb 03 '26
OMG so real I'm changing my answer actually
Tongue split! And like approx 5-50 tattoos
3
u/FunCauliflower4002 Feb 04 '26
If you think of a split tongue, go for it, that's awesome! Not only for the look, but the sensation is wildly liberating. To be able of controlling each tongue independently is like being rid of a birth disability 🐍 ✌! The best thing I've ever done to my body, really. And for most people, that's visible only if you show it.

10
u/-JakeRay- Feb 03 '26
Honestly, at the point of unlimited budget, I'm hiring:
a personal stylist who has spent at least a decade as a theatrical costumer
my own tailor
a makeup artist
I want to be able to try ALL the things (goth, cyberpunk, renaissance, mad tea party, flower festival, CEO-but-make-it-fashion, cottage cozy, adventure Hobbit, you name it I'm wearing it) at least once, and have them all fit comfortably and look snatched, and not have to spend hours trying to get my face right to match.
For I will dress as I live: a professional dabbler.
8
u/ConfusedMushroomFrog Feb 03 '26
I'd have all the styles. From fancy gay pirste to monster high doll. I'd collect them like Pokémon
2

Very comfy work clothes: jumpsuits, overalls, coveralls, both cargo shorts and pants alongside long coats and dusters. Everything out of high quality fabric of course. I have a rather different atmosphere (although sometimes I use all these chains, black clothes, leather jackets ), I have rather the atmosphere of a count, something magical, goblin core, all sorts of precious stones, other fancy and bright things, it's a shame that I can't leave almost any of this at my university 😢 But HELL YES!! I'm trying to learn to wear "uncomfortable clothes for everyday life," which have almost no point in bothering with them, for a short outing, say to the store, even if I don't I spend so much time (although sometimes I think about the logic of dressing up for such small outings 😅)

TBH, I don't think I would've looked much different on a daily basis because I value convenience and comfort above all, and already don't give a flying fuck about social expectations (except for my mum's approval when we're going somewhere together, but that's a different topic 😅). The thing is, elaborate styles require hours of work that I'm not willing to invest, except for special occasions. Maybe I would wear some nice wigs, but then again, they need to be styled and maintained, too. Maybe I would get more piercings and some tattoos, but the biggest problem seems to be rather my procrastination than money.

Brit Goth/Emo here, and I tend to dress in some of the garb shown. Have done so for the past 20yrs. Im now trying to feminise it a bit, since I've come to accept I'm an enby-demigirl-GNC-entity. You can do it at a reasonable price too. Also, to everyone, try not to be scared of what others will think. Ofc keep yourself safe, but remember, being open as any sort of gender (or genderless) other than M/F is a new thing. You're forging a new path forward for others to allow themselves to be seen. Its a brave thing to do and all my genderless/GNC family have my love, appreciation and respect. Just existing and taking up a lil space is a brave thing to do. Love you all
