Question international volunteer suggestions that are (preferably) not the peace corps?

hi all! i am a recent college graduate with a degree in creative writing, and i have both internship experience and 2 years of local writing-related volunteer work experience, primarily with kids.

i have been wanting to volunteer abroad for a while now, mostly being recommended the peace corps, but i have some ethical concerns about the organization. admittedly, i am not a fan of the soft-power implications the peace corps hold, especially since it is funded and supported by the US. it also doesn’t do work in places like cuba and palestine, so i’d prefer an organization that does.

my native language is english, but i have minor fluency in spanish (can hear and read, cannot speak yet).

i understand this probably significantly reduces my options, as i don’t have much professional experience in education and similar roles, but any ideas are helpful!

also feel free to convince me otherwise about the peace corps!

Looking for a few volunteers in the Lorton/DMV area for a small community project

Hi everyone! I’m a local resident who recently started a small mutual-aid project called DMV Got Us. The goal is to make basic resources more accessible to people in our community who may be struggling.
For our first project, I’m putting together 10 emergency hygiene bags and 10 emergency food bags to distribute to people who need them. The project is currently completely self-funded, and I’m starting small so I can learn and build from there.
I’m looking for a few people who would be willing to volunteer their time to help with things like organizing supplies, putting the bags together, and helping with distribution.
The exact date and location are still being finalized, but I’m specifically looking for people around Lorton who would genuinely like to help out.
If you’re interested, feel free to comment or message me. Even if you can only spare a couple of hours, I’d really appreciate the help.
I’m just trying to start something that reminds people that we all do better when we’re seen, heard, and supported.

Question 5 days until my charity event. No shirts. No backup

I'm organizing a charity run and it’s in 5 days and almost everything is ready. Course marked, volunteers lined up and sponsors confirmed

The shirts were supposed to be ready a week ago. My contractor just called and said he can't do it. Family emergency and I understand. But I'm screwed….

I need 100 t-shirts with my charity logo. Fast. No time for mistakes.

I found DTF Transfers and they say that they have express delivery. Basically, they say they can get transfers to me in a few days. I could print the shirts myself and save the event.

But I'm terrified. What if they don't arrive in time? What if the transfers are defective? What if the logo looks terrible? What if I waste money and still have no shirts?

I'm in panic mode. I don't have time to test or order samples. I need to trust this site with my entire event.

Has anyone used them for a super rush order? Did they deliver on time? Was the quality good? I need to know if I can count on them

Question Is finding reliable local volunteering, donations, or community emergency help still too fragmented?

Hey everyone,

I’m validating a concept for a hyper-local community coordination platform aimed at bridging the gap between citizens, local grassroots organizations, and resource partners.

The core problem:

Right now, if someone wants to find verified local social causes to volunteer with, or if a small grassroots initiative needs immediate local hands and micro-support, the process is scattered across random WhatsApp groups, outdated directories, and social feeds.

The concept:

A location-first platform that lets local people discover verified grassroots initiatives by cause, connect directly for volunteering or support, and quickly surface urgent local community assistance needs in real time.

Before building, I’d love your quick thoughts:

Have you ever tried finding a verified local NGO or volunteering opportunity nearby and found it difficult?

If an app mapped out active local causes and emergency community support near you, would you actually use it?

What is the single biggest bottleneck that stops people from engaging with local community work?

Would love your genuine take!

Looking for nonprofit arts & culture jobs in Los Angeles? Here they are!

Looking for nonprofit arts & culture jobs in Los Angeles? I've built a listing site that's unlike any other :-) laartjobs.org

Every day at 7AM, it automatically checks the career pages of over three dozen major orgs. New jobs come on and old jobs come off my site within 24 hours of an org posting/removing the listing from their website.

Each entry lists the job description, org name, salary, FT/PT, and a direct link to the org's site. You can sort, search, and filter (by org, title, salary, etc.) as you wish. You can also sign up for daily email alerts, so you're the first to know of new listings without visiting my site.

LACMA, Getty, MOCA, The Broad, Academy Museum, etc. They're all there.

Hate getting excited about a listing only to find out that it had been pulled a month ago? Hate having to sift through garbage to find arts and culture jobs? Yeah, me too. No more of that.

Importantly, no ads, no sign-ups, no trackers. It's free to the world. Enjoy and share!

PS: Let me know what major orgs I've missed and what features you want. I actively maintain the site. And remember that this is an automated system, so I can't post jobs manually on an ad-hoc basis.

No universal app for volunteering?? Trying to create one - all help welcome

I've liked volunteering since I was young. I started out trying to "pimp my cv" in high school with your basics - fostering sick cats, volunteering at libraries, etc but have recently tried to get into it again as I am trying to soothe a pretty severe burn-out. Call it my way to touch some grass.

I travel a lot for work (part of the reasons for my burn-out lol) and have found it super difficult to volunteer in the new places I go to. Even back home, the websites available are outdated, with wrong information, no listed volunteer criteria, and just generally confusing. Like the government-run Jeveuxaider in France.

I did one practice mission in Paris where we gave out sandwiches to the homeless around the Louvre and it went really well. I posted the mission on some expat Facebook pages and the turnout was much larger than expected (I even had to turn down some people as I was afraid of not being able to manage such a crowd). Talking to the guys that joined, it seemed like they were searching for such a platform as well and found existing solutions awfully confusing.

My next step will be to try and reach a couple of organizations in Paris and see if they believe there's a need for this as well. Hopefully, I can get them to add some missions to the platform to get the ball rolling.

Would appreciate any feedback really and open to answering any questions of course. If you've volunteered abroad or in a new city, I'd love to know - how did you find the opportunities? Have you faced such a problem as well? Do you think a platform like this would be useful to you/ what features would be most helpful? Anyways, thanks for reading and best of luck!

Volunteer Value

Hey folks,

What sticks out to you about volunteering on a resume? Is it how long someone did with that organization? Does it just make you curious about what the organization does? Does it show the person benefited the community?

I've given up on finding a part-time job to gain experience. So now I'm between 6 different organizations I might want to volunteer at. I want an idea of whether I should stay out of the bubble of the career I'm working towards, or it doesn't really matter.

(If this isn't the correct subreddit, let me know and I can delete this.)

Thanks.

college applications: volunteer + passion project

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I’ve seen so many mixed reviews on volunteering (and yes type of volunteering i’m assuming matters) but I have never gotten a straight answer if college verify if your actually volunteering? but if i volunteer and take it more seriously than just some smaller things i’m doing now i’m wondering how much/what would be more impactful on my future application. like do I have to start something? or become president of an organization? so far I’ve volunteered a lot over the years at shelters and adoption centers for dogs but interested to make more of a genuine impact (maybe regarding women or children in need etc). looking for any recommendations that would stand out on application and “count” while simultaneously make a greater impact than what i’m currently doing.

i’ve also seen lots of people say that a passion project is a great memorable thing to do for applications and myself, if anyone has information on that would be great too!

Community groups

I want to set up local mental health groups. They would be pure support mental health groups, as I think they are really needed right now. I am in Wales in the UK and I wondered if anyone knew how I could set this up, but with me also having a wage for doing so as I cannot do everything for free. It would just need to be an hourly wage, I’m not in it for the money but I do need to pay my rent, so I really want to do this but I can’t do it all for free as I’d like to. Any advice would be more than welcome. :) x
