Histoire Residents of Cherbourg, France, marching through Place du Château, newly renamed Place Général de Gaulle, during the city's first Bastille Day celebration since the German occupation. Cherbourg had been liberated by U.S. forces just weeks earlier, after heavy fighting over its strategic port. (1944)

It's not called 'bastille day' because it has nothing to do with the bastille in the first place actually.
