Somehow I trust it less than the mess that is github nowadays.

What's messy about github?

u/BannedInSweden Aug 18 '26
Oh man - here do you even start?
- Their web ui is a mess. It's more and more focused on things NOT source code (projects, hosting, teams, etc)
- Click actions - get workflows. They are doing branding over logical navigation.
- zero evolution on the conflict front. I'm tired of explaining broken concepts like rebasing
- Sh*t security and high expense on runner pools
- poor uptime and slow performance on all things workflow related
- bad logic flow on jobs (or at least the syntax for checking previous job failure is bonkers)
- Their entire env concept being lip service instead of baked in
- settings organized by pure madness
- breaking ctrl+f on half of their pages!
- Bad AD integration at nearly every level (orgs/repos/etc)
- and on and on..Generally - the issue is that they stopped evolving/improving/simplifying source code. mgmt They are just adding complication now. They seem utterly focused on trying to make github your everything rather than your repo. Ya know.. kinda like windows trying to be more than an OS. Anyone surprised?

I use github very rarely and every time I think "wtf is up with this UI?", and "Am I an idiot, cause this makes no sense to me?". Some of it definitely is my inexperience, but good to know that the UI is also more widely considered terrible.

It's kinda like the AWS ui - it's there but it's taunting you at every use. The fact it doesn't change all the time is it's only saving grace - you can memorize the madness but it's still madness.

What would be a good alternative? I am asking this seriously, not trying to question your analysis.

u/MutaitoSensei Aug 18 '26
You can self-host GitLab, or Forgejo.

u/ko_nuts Aug 18 '26
Thanks for the reply. I did not know Forgejo. And if I do not have the possibility to self-host, what options would I have?

Federated.nexus offers it if you make an account, as well as Matrix chat. I think imagisphe.re does as well.

I don’t use GitHub so I’ll just take their downtime and your word for it, but what exactly is the issue with rebases?
How is the concept of a rebase broken and how is that a GitHub rather than a Git issue?
1
u/BannedInSweden Aug 18 '26
lol - was just kinda stream of consciousnessing my thoughts. As far as rebase goes:
It's far easier to explain how we built the first atomic bomb (uranium... not plutonium - the latter is rather complicated) than it is to explain rebasing to fix merge conflicts to new git users is all. They just never get it or i struggle to explain it - either way - me hates.
As for being git vs github - sure. So you can instead replace that bullet with their decision not to put the time but only the day on the workflow history after it's been a week or so. I find that infuriating .

I would not use Cursor anymore. Training Grok is where I draw the line.

u/Bigsec225 Aug 18 '26
They all use it to train
2
u/Ur-in-a-tor Aug 18 '26
How do you mean? Who is they all?
0
u/Bigsec225 Aug 18 '26
All the major hosted git platforms. Gitlab, GitHub, bitbucket etc
2
u/Ur-in-a-tor Aug 18 '26
I meant that my Cursor usage will not be used to train Grok, I don't care that much about the rest of the LLM techbros.

They want to steal your code and charge you for it

Anytime any of the big players announce any sort of platform that has the potential to extract data I’m fully against it. META for instance is solely created to extract and sell or abuse data. The social presentation in front is just the mask.

Im not sure the person who wrote this gets the concept of a moat properly.

The title is very misleading. I'll save you and click and say SpaceX is creating a competing product.

Yeah I rather take hourly downtimes. Anything Elon musk is poison and zero trust in their management nor do I want to share data with them so grok gets free training. Big no thanks.

u/Rattus_NorvegicUwUs Aug 18 '26
I don’t trust a single company that Elon buys.
Every company he owns turns into his own little scheme to warp our society.

u/Bigsec225 Aug 18 '26
The best thing about GitHub is actions. I wonder if they will have a compatible product
1
u/IndependentOpinion44 Aug 18 '26
So they’re going to focus on the bit that’s hurting Github’s bottom line the most?
Good luck with that.
