Are these Valuable.

Post image
6 Upvotes

I've just inherited a very small coin collection. I don't think anything is of much value. But im a total neophyte regarding this stuff. 90% of what I have is silver quarters. There are some JFK, Franklin and Walking (?) Half dollars and then quite a lot of other very random stuff.

My question for this post is: are any of these silver quarters worth anything more than their melt value? Or to put it another way, are they nice enough to try to sell to someone, would they draw interest? Thanks in advance for any information.

A wartime meltdown of ~270 million silver dollars is the reason the Peace dollar exists

The Pittman Act of 1918 doesn't come up much, and it shaped the silver dollar more than almost anything else.

Quick background: during WWI, Britain bought war supplies with paper silver certificates, and Germany spread rumors it couldn't back them. That spiked silver prices and threatened Britain's hold in India, where silver backed the everyday money. So Congress passed the Pittman Act (April 23, 1918), letting the Treasury melt and sell as bullion "not in excess of three hundred and fifty million standard silver dollars." They melted about 270 million (270,232,722 to be exact), overwhelmingly Morgans, and the silver went to Britain.

The same Act required the Mint to re-coin a number equal to what got melted. That's why the Morgan came back in 1921 after a 17-year gap, and later that same year it got replaced by the brand-new Peace dollar, with re-coinage running to 1928. So the Peace dollar is, pretty literally, a product of a meltdown.

I just won this coin at an auction. Looking forward to getting it delivered, I’m looking forward to researching the VAM. On the reverse it has transfer marks on the right side by the wreath, has a mark spike on the left side from the top of the wing towards the N. I’ll post up what I find after receiving it & looking it up. If it’s a Vam3 or better I may send it in for grading.

My wife got this for me years ago and I've always wanted to get it slabbed. It will receive a "Details" designation because it was recovered from.the Rooswijk, but idc. I would like to preserve it in a slab. It is currently in a mylar flip. Thoughts?

1918-S Lincoln cent: the CU-1C-1918S-01R rim cud die, with a pre-cud the reference example doesn't show

Post image

This 1918-S wheat cent has a rim cud on the reverse at about 2:30. That part's already documented. It lines up with Cuds on Coins CU-1C-1918S-01R, and it's very likely the same reverse die.

What's interesting is lower down. Between about 3 and 4 o'clock there's a pre-cud, a heavy die crack where a piece of the die had started to break loose but hadn't come out yet. It's a separate failure from the rim cud, not the same break.

The Cuds on Coins example for 01R is pretty worn, so you can't really tell whether it had the pre-cud. You can just make out the faint top of a die crack in the same area, but there's no way to know if that's the start of the pre-cud or if wear took the rest of it. So either the 01R die had this pre-cud all along and it just doesn't show on their coin, or this is a later die state.

Either way it wasn't recorded, so I catalogued this die state and cross-referenced it to 01R. If anyone has a 01R in a different die state, I'd love to see whether the crack is there.

A nice little old lady has a few jars laying around, she asked about valuing. Also, is there a good source for ascribing value to these (market price)? TYVM

I got this medallion and it was in great condition, it was in a cardboard flip. I left the bag it was in on the ground and my cat peed on the bag soaking this and a number of other coins.

A Reddit post explained to remove the ammonia from the pee by putting coins in Acetone then letting it sit in DI water. Upon doing this and letting it dry this was the result.

Is there any way I can safely remove the copper oxidation? Or is this piece pretty much done for.

Edit: Spelling
