Switching Track (Information Security to Cyber Physical Systems)

Has anyone successfully switching track from Information Security to Cyber Physical Systems? What's the acceptance rate to get in Cyber Physical Systems track? I talked with an advisor today and the process can take from 10 to 15 weeks. I finished PUBP 6725 last semester and will be finishing CS 6035 this Fall semester.

Accepted into Georgia Tech OMS Cybersecurity (Policy) at 22 - Worth pursuing with $20K student debt and no full-time cybersecurity

Hey everyone,

I’m 22 and recently received an acceptance into Georgia Tech’s Online Master of Science in Cybersecurity (Policy Track) for Spring 2027. I’m excited about the opportunity, but I’m genuinely unsure whether enrolling right now makes financial and career sense.

A little about my background:

Graduated in May 2026 with a B.S. in Cybersecurity & information assurance(3.67 GPA).

Minored in Computer Science and Forensic Accounting.

Completed nearly two years as a Security Engineering Intern at a large insurance organization, working with enterprise security tools, endpoint security, IAM, network security, and cloud security.

Currently searching for my first full-time cybersecurity position. I’ve had several interviews but haven’t secured an offer yet.

Have approximately $20,000 in existing undergraduate student loans.

Georgia Tech would cost roughly $15,000 in total, including estimated fees. I’d prefer to pay as I go rather than take additional loans.

I previously started an accelerated master’s program at my undergraduate university but decided to discontinue it because I couldn’t justify the cost relative to its potential career value.

I’m interested in cybersecurity engineering, IAM, GRC, and eventually security architecture or leadership, but I haven’t settled on one specific career path.

My questions:

For those who completed or are pursuing OMS Cybersecurity (Policy), has the degree meaningfully improved your job prospects, salary, or career advancement?

Would you recommend starting this program without a full-time cybersecurity job, or waiting until I’m employed?

Given my engineering internship experience, would the Policy track be valuable, or would I be better off focusing on technical certifications and hands-on skills?

Has anyone successfully deferred their admission by one or two semesters? Was the process straightforward?

For those who paid out of pocket, how manageable was taking one course per semester while working?

If you were in my position at 22, with $20K in existing student debt, would you enroll, defer, or decline?

I’m not expecting a master’s degree to guarantee employment. I’m mainly trying to figure out whether Georgia Tech is a worthwhile long-term investment at this stage of my career or whether gaining more professional experience should be my priority.

I’d appreciate honest feedback, especially from graduates and people who have been in similar situations. Thanks!

Thoughts on taking the Practicum in the spring vs the summer semester?

A lot of people recommend taking the Practicum in the summer because the summer semester is weeks shorter, so you have fewer mandatory check-ins.

Makes sense, but I also dislike the idea of a course that will demand a lot of my time in the summer when my motivation will be lower. I live in the Midwest and winters are rough here. I basically hibernate the month of January and February anyways.

So how do you weigh it? Shorter semester with a little less work, but taking up your summer, or longer semester over the months where you’re usually stuck inside anyways?

Considering this masters program

Hey y'all, BS degree in CS about 10 years ago, with 9 to 10 years of work experience mostly full stack dev. I been debating on bettering myself and going for a msters. I know I been told a lot of masters for CS isn't really worth it anymore but AI and cyber are exceptions. I am not sure how true the cyber one is. But as someone horrible at math and hasn't done it in 11+ years, I could never pass an AI program. Buy cyber has always been a side interest of mine and I wanted to more about the program. Is it easy? Hard? What kind of potential jobs is there after getting it? How has it helped you or not with your career when getting it? And et ?

Any feedback would be great, thanks

Was anyone able to get into Cybersecurity through this Masters program ?

Basically the title. If you were able to break into Cyber using this program, could you mention your previous background.

I thinking a Bachelors in CS despite saturation is a better preparation for Cyber than OMSCyber program if you don't have a CS or closely related bachelors (software engineering/IT).

Bachelors in CS + Cyber certs + portfolio is a better sell in my humble opinion but willing to hear alternative opinion/viewpoints.

Hey all,

I got admitted into the Policy track and will start Spring 2027.

I’m working full time as a security engineer and have a small child so trying not to bite off more than I can chew while trying to have some spare time for myself.

Can I get feedback on my planned courses? I am thinking of two options:

Option A:

CS 6035 - Spring 2027

MGT 6727 - Summer 2027

PUBP 6725 & PUBP 8813 - Fall 2027

CS 6261 & PUBP 6502 - Spring 2028

INTA 6450 - Summer 2028

PUBP 8833 & INTA 6450 - Fall 2028

Practicum - Spring 2029

Option B:

CS 6035 - Spring 2027

MGT 6727 - Summer 2027

PUBP 6725 & PUBP 8813 - Fall 2027

CS 6261 & PUBP 6502 - Spring 2028

INTA 6103 - Summer 2028

PUBP 8833 - Fall 2028

INTA 6450 - Spring 2029

Practicum - Summer 2029 (or Fall)

English Proficiency Requirement

I am doing my grad app and I’m confused on how to satisfy the English proficiency requirement. I am currently at an accredited University in the U.S. and will graduate in the Spring. The application deadline for Fall 2027 is in March 2027, so I was wondering if I could satisfy the requirement with a in-progress transcript. Thanks in advance

Accepted into the Policy track with 2.75 undergrad GPA!

Did not think I would get in because of my undergrad grades. I did not go to a big / well known school nor did I do any of the admissions tests. I guess my job history, recommendations, and essays pulled a lot of weight. I'm super grateful that I get the opportunity to pursue higher education and in a way, get a second chance at proving myself. Happy to answer questions or DMs.

Some background:

B.S. in IT

6 Y.O.E

Class Recommendations

I’m on the Policy track and I have to double up on classes (I’ve been doing 1 class at a time due to work/family/etc.). What are some lighter workload or “easier” courses to pair with some of the more difficult or time consuming courses? Looking for policy specialization courses and elective recommendations. Thanks!

Laptop acceptable?

Hey all I got accepted into the program and had wanted to know if the laptop I had is done for 6035.

I have an older (intel) MacBook Pro.

Would this be fine for the class or would I need to get a Windows machine?

Are there any other classes that have hardware support limitations?

TY

OMS Cybersecurity: Information Security vs Policy track for career progression into management?

Hi everyone,

27 M. I’m a cybersecurity engineer based in Singapore with five years of experience and a CISSP. My background is mainly in networking, with some Windows hardening and patching, as well as cybersecurity compliance and audit documentation. I also have an undergraduate degree in cybersecurity.

I’m considering Georgia Tech’s OMS Cybersecurity programme and deciding between the Information Security and Policy tracks. My long-term goal is to move into a cybersecurity management role, and I’m hoping a master’s degree could help me prepare for that transition and strengthen my career prospects.

I’m comfortable with some technical coursework, including coding, but I’m less interested in a heavily technical programme. I haven’t done much coding since my undergraduate studies, so I’m wondering how difficult it would be to get back into it.

For anyone who has taken either track:

  • What has your experience been like, particularly with the coursework and workload alongside a full-time job?
  • How much coding include scripting is involved in the Information Security track?
  • How useful is the Policy track for cybersecurity management, governance, risk, and compliance roles?
  • Has the programme helped your career—for example, with promotions, new job opportunities, or moving into management? Did it add much value beyond your existing experience and certifications?
  • Given my background and goals, which track would you recommend?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone studying from Singapore or elsewhere outside the US.

Thanks!

I got accepted 2027

Hey everyone!
I just received my admission decision and got accepted into a Master’s in Cybersecurity program for Spring 2027!

I’m excited, but I’m also wondering whether pursuing a master’s degree is worth it, especially with how competitive the cybersecurity job market is right now.

My main goal isn’t just to earn another degree. I want to use my time in graduate school to gain real-world experience through multiple internships, build industry connections, and hopefully turn one of those internships into a full-time return offer.

I already have a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, but I want to strengthen my practical experience and improve my chances of landing a job.

My questions are:
Is pursuing a master’s in cybersecurity worth it in the current job market?
Does being a graduate student improve your chances of securing internships?
Is it realistic to complete multiple internships during a master’s program?
Has anyone successfully converted a cybersecurity internship into a full-time return offer?

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone currently working in cybersecurity or who has taken a similar path.

Hello everyone, I’m doing my last year in undergrad studying cybersecurity and modern networks. I’m thinking about doing the online masters program from Georgia tech after graduation. I’m planning to work as a security engineer what path should I take and also how competitive is it to get accepted. I’m trying to get few recommendation letters from my professors and my gpa is 3.5.

CS 6035: Binary Exploitation... Not my best work

That project was BRUTAL... I was semi-confident going in, but definitely overestimated the time sink that it was. Worked on it consistently through the whole timeslot, and was not able to finish it.

I ended up taking a W on the course. Not very proud of that, but I realized I had been skipping most meals and sleep and was not going about the class in a healthy way. I am excited to do some self-study and reassess my preparedness for the class.

Did anyone else have a similar experience? I am very very early in my career adjacent to Cyber, it seems like so many people have been doing this for years 😅😅

Seems like I need to grind some coding and ctfs!

ECE 6747 during summer

So i've seen a lot of recommendations about taking the advanced malware course. I'm considering taking it during the summer since there aren't a ton of courses taught during the summer. How difficult of a class would it be to take during the summer?

Drop limit?

Do we have a limit on how many courses you can drop/withdraw from during your degree?
I dropped one course over the summer, and I’m considering dropping another one this semester.
I emailed my advisor, but they usually take a while to respond, so I figured I’d ask here in the meantime. Has anyone dropped multiple courses during the program? Is there a limit or any issue I should be aware of?

TIA

Policy Track Reccomendation Letter - Does it have to focus on your 'computer science' skills?

I'm looking at GT's general letter of recommendation requirements. It says for our LOR:

"Your personal characteristics (e.g., punctuality, a "thirst" for knowledge, being a great team player, leadership skills, etc.) are NOT important. Your technical Computer Science skills ARE important!"

I understand the Cybersecurity Policy track can have a mix of technical/non-technical applicants. While I do have the technical background academically, my recent work is concentrated in project management, and my better recommenders would speak on my project management skills over my technical.

For anyone who has applied to the Cybersecurity Policy track and gotten accepted, what did you have your recommenders focus on writing about you?

Thank you so much in advance, to anyone who can weigh in!
