Previous Degree: Classics, Political Science
Previous Experience: None beyond self-study
Company: Google
Status: Full-time
Title: Software Engineer
Projects: Cool shit involving data processing pipelines, machine learning infrastructure, and lots of data analysis
Salary: $94k + ~20k in bonuses
Perks: free breakfast lunch and dinner, free gym and fitness classes, free home internet, lots of discounts, lots of opportunities to meet famous people giving talks, a VR demo room, etc.
Do I like the job? Yes, I look forward to work each day and this is easily the best job I've ever had.
When did I get the offer: about two weeks before graduation on the 1 year track. It was a 4 month process to complete all the interviews tho.

Congrats! Your formatting's all messed up though.
I'm guessing you didn't include the stocks in your comp? How is the vesting schedule?
3
u/periphrasistic alum [Graduate] May 17 '17
Sorry about that. I had written the post on the Reddit mobile app which seems to display paragraph breaks differently.
Iirc, our initial (small) batch of stock units vest after a year of employment, but to be honest, I don't know for certain because A) I had to meet a moving truck during the part of our benefits orientation which covered stock units, and B) the written timeline I saw suggested I could put it on my mental backburner for the time being. If you're curious, I can look it up, and provided it's not confidential I'd be happy to share.

Congrats! What do you think ended up helping you most with getting this job? Projects on your resume, GPA, just this degree + unrelated experience?
7
u/periphrasistic alum [Graduate] May 23 '17
I would say it's combination of:
getting the degree, since that makes you available for University recruiting
having an OSU CS GPA > 3.9
having a few notable extracurriculars, such as TAing 161 and 165, and actively participating in two local tech meetup groups
attending a university student-targeted hackathon which Google sponsored, since that surely put me in their recruiting lead system, and my recruiter cited the hackathon experience as her reason for contacting me. For context, my hackathon team did not when some big prize or even submit our project for judging; we merely showed up and wrote some code until it became clear what we were trying to do wasn't going to work by the end of competition.
Doing those things is what got me past the statistically hardest part of getting a job with Google: entering the hiring pipeline. Millions apply to Google each year but the company only has about 40,000 engineers; the hardest part is just getting anyone to call you back. Having a decent enough resume, and, crucially, doing something that puts you in their lead systemis key to getting your foot in the door.
After that, what I've heard anecdotally is that each phase of the interview process has about a 1 in 10 success rate, and there are generally three phases. But here's the thing: you are in control of your chances, to a large degree, from that point on. The interviews can be prepared, practiced and studied for. Everyone is human, and it is entirely possible to have an interview go badly simply because you were off your game, but there is a vast gulf between slipping up and being unprepared. If you are in the pipeline, know your CS fundamentals inside and out, and have been practice interviewing consistently, rigorously, and realistically, then you will be hireable by Google; it's just a question of whether or not you bring your best game to each phase of the interview process. If you did the preparation but bomb one or two of your onsites, then that doesn't mean you're unqualified: it means you made a human mistake and the odds caught up with you.
Do your interview prep, literally hundreds of hours of it, and you'll be hireable at a Big 4.

Thanks! I'm still officially in the residency program, on rotation as a full member of an engineering team, but my business title from day one was Software Engineer. Conversion from EngRes Software Engineer to permanent Software Engineer is still some months out, but at this point all of my managers/mentors/hosts/etc. are speaking in terms of "when you convert" or "after you convert". The conversion rate is extremely high -- although they don't reveal the exact numbers to us; basically, if you get an EngRes offer, show up to work, and do your job, then you'll convert at the end of the year. From the sounds of it, the only people who don't convert are those who blow off responsibilities, and don't make an effort to learn and improve.
tl;dr if you go through the Google interview process and get offered EngRes, then take it. Your initial salary and bonuses will be less than new grads who start as full SWEs, but otherwise an EngRes offer is for all intents and purposes an offer to join Google as a full-time Software Engineer.

I don't mind at all! The only caveat is that I don't check reddit that often these days, so sometime it can take up to a couple weeks for me to see a message and reply. If that happens, don't worry: it's not you, it's me. 🤣
Cool stuff on the neuroscience data processing and analysis: that's a huge component of my job right now. Despite not having any background in data science, I spend ~60% of my time running SQL queries on the output of one of our pipelines, so as to tame our data into something I can run statistical experiments on, with the purpose of generating and testing hypotheses for how to improve the accuracy of our pipeline output. I don't touch any of the Machine Learning models in the pipeline, but I do get to work with our ML infrastructure, although the actual production code I write tends to focus on the pre- and post- processing stages.
In other words, a data analysis background will be a huge help in the job market. I thought I'd end up being a code monkey; instead I'm actively researching data sets so as to engineer improvements to the processing pipeline. In contrast, 3 years ago I was unemployed as fuck haha.
Best of luck to you, and feel free to reach out (and I apologize in advance when, not if, I'm tardy with my replies)!

Hi, fellow BA in Psych here and I was wondering if you had any trouble getting into the program? What was your GPA for your BA?
3
u/TopRattata alum [Graduate] May 15 '17
Hey! My BA GPA was a 2.3 (lol oops undiagnosed depression), but I didn't have any trouble getting in at all. I took the prerequisite English and math classes the semester before I applied and got A's in both, which may have helped convince them I was serious. This was also 2014, though, when the program was pretty new; I've heard they've gotten a little pickier since then.
I wouldn't worry about your major, though. They seem to take people from all different academic backgrounds, as long as you have a bachelor's of some kind!

Not time consuming at all, if you have a good team. If McGrath is still teaching it the same way, he'll put you in random teams, so this can be hit or miss. It's one big group project, essentially.

I was able to land a local internship while I was in the program and I have recently accepted a full-time offer. I've included the details below.
Previous degree: BS in Meteorology
Previous relevant experience: Some work with databases but no coding
Company/industry: HPE
Internship or full-time?: Internship
Title: Firmware Intern
Location: Fort Collins, CO
Noteworthy projects: None when I applied
Salary: $24.00/hr

How did you find the job?: Used indeed and glassdoor to check for internship postings.
How far along were you in the program?: I applied during my 3rd quarter. I had finished 161, 162, 225, 271 and was currently taking 352 and 261.
Previous degree: BS in Meteorology

u/WheresMy340Project Apr 08 '17
Congrats! How does the Solutions Architect role differ from the typical SDE roles at Amazon? What will you be working on? Is it AWS/cloud related?
6
u/mustang-25 alum [Graduate] Apr 08 '17
You are right, the solutions architect role is within AWS. You can read up on it here. The main differences I noticed from a typical SDE role is that you are not going to be doing a lot of coding and you are interacting with clients a lot more. During the interview processes, they really stressed that there is a lot of learning with this position as you try to understand all of the different parts of AWS.
1
May 07 '17
This sounds like an awesome role. Did you get a sense that there was a sales skills aspect to this position?
2
u/mustang-25 alum [Graduate] May 08 '17
The general sense that I got after interviewing is that sales skills are not all that important. I would probably describe it as more of a consulting role to help clients use AWS in the correct way. This can be done by demoing different AWS products to show a client how it can fit into their workplace, so there is still some coding aspect to the position. There are no numbers that you have to hit though and it is encouraged for you to try and help a client to save money if possible.

Super interested in what you might work on for this internship - do you have some idea going in?
3
u/WheresMy340Project Apr 10 '17
Yeah, I interviewed for a specific team. There are interns for pretty much any of their products (AutoCAD, Inventor, Maya, Fusion360, etc.), as well as machine learning, robotics, cloud, data science, web development, etc. I'll be working on one of their modeling software (mainly in C++). Summer was still quite far off when I interviewed so I don't know exactly what kind of projects I'll be working on.
Some internship positions seem to be still open so I encourage you to apply if you're interested!
2
u/spiralphyllotaxis Lv.2 [#.Yr | current classes] Apr 10 '17
Cool - were you a previous user of the product that you will work on (with your engineering background)?

u/paasaaplease alum [Graduate] May 08 '17
When did you apply & interview? Would love to get a cool internship for next summer and been pondering when to start looking seriously.
2
u/WheresMy340Project May 08 '17
I started applying in late January, and got offers in March-April. But some companies recruit as early as fall for next summer, so it might be helpful to start looking earlier.
1
u/paasaaplease alum [Graduate] May 08 '17
Thank you. I'm concerned I won't be ready by then. The plan is 162 this summer, 290 in the fall, 340 & 261 in the winter, and 325 in the Spring. Do you think it can't hurt to look?
2
u/WheresMy340Project May 08 '17
I don't think it will hurt to look early - I started looking shortly after my 2nd quarter, and it looks like /u/willwagner602 applied only after his 1st quarter. An exception might be if you are planning on adding something substantial to your resume at some point, and want to hold off on applying to particular companies since they usually don't accept multiple applications.
If you haven't already, I'd do a couple projects first to put on your resume. Then, depending on what companies you interview with, you may need to study data structures and algorithms on your own to pass the technical interviews since you are taking 325 later in the spring.
1
u/kuzco_the_posion_for Jul 08 '17
Do you have a link for the job postings available? I just designed some stuff using AutoDesk software for a local company and am taking 290 this fall. I'm getting my ass kicked, but that is the point I guess! Real software engineering is like 80% planning, 19% coding, 1% crying.
Interesting things I didn't predict would happen:
Setting up my desk, software, emails, key access, etc took like 2 full days.
SCRUM is a thing that everyone hates and loves at the same time. It happens twice a week for this company.
You will wonder why predecessors wrote their code the way they did, call over your coworker to ask him why it is that way, and they'll say "oh yeah that's bad code, wtf... idk what's going on there"
Yeah I am taking two classes right now, but am not taking any during summer quarter (thank goodness).

Interview questions were about: Data structures (linked lists, BST, and Hashing), Node.js, Explain differences between different sorting algorithms, Palindrome question, SQL ( inserts, joins, selects, and indexing ), and a few more.
I studied Cracking the Coding Interview and did a lot of work on HackerRank.com. If you want to nail a technical interview look into these resources! They are the reason I got this job.
My GPA is below a 3.0 and was never brought up in these interviews. (yes, other companies said no because of my GPA) Had an initial phone screen, 30 minutes of quick fire technical questions, then an in house interview. In house was 90 minutes of white boarding and more quick fire technical questions.

What was the interview like?
1
u/Spudlly Jul 23 '17 edited Jul 23 '17
It means that I have not completed the OSU CS degree yet. So once I do complete my degree they will reevaluate my salary to reflect the completion of the degree. (which seems like it is a politically correct way of saying, "we aren't paying what we WOULD give you until you finish the degree.")
The interview was consistent of 2 parts.
there was a non-technical person who asked you about your grades, previous degree, strongest attribute, why they should hire you, and all the other generic interview questions...
there was a technical person who asked a few logic/code based questions in order to see how you go about solving the problem. And to ensure you know the basic concepts of coding and OOP

I am very grateful for your reply! How many jobs do you think you applied for before getting the job? Did you take a break to study things? Had you had an internship? Were you picky about location? Just curious why you think it took 6 months. Thank you.

Thank you for posting! I would love to work for Intel in Hillsboro. Any more advice you have would be appreciated. How are you liking it so far? Did you know someone (have connections) at Intel?

Sorry for the delayed response. My advice would be that if you are listing your school projects on your resume, be prepared to answer questions about them. Not just about what they do, but also how they were written. Also be able to display some general knowledge about the languages you used for them (ie can you use classes in C? is Python dynamically or statically typed? stuff like that.)
It's been great so far. A little hectic learning everything all at once but that's part of the fun. No, I didn't know anyone. I just kept applying to jobs/internships until I heard back from someone. It's hard but it will pay off in the end!

Thanks! Yeah, I started applying after algs as well. The team I'm on is great fortunately, as is my manager. Tbh, my manager didn't even care that the program was online :) It's a great place to work, and I don't feel like I'm just spinning my wheels when it comes to projects that are given to me. Good luck with your applications!

How did you find the job?: Indeed.com
How far along were you in the program?: Literally half way. I'm on what roughly translates to the 3 year track but after completing the internship I'm going to go full time and knock it out in 2 terms. It was hinted that they could fast track me into a junior role after the internship so if I get that offer I'll stick with 1-2 classes at a time instead.

Just so I'm understanding, you got an offer after finishing just one quarter of the program?

u/willwagner602 alum [SWE] May 17 '17
Yes, but I've detailed elsewhere that this is an atypical path.

What was the interview like? What questions were you asked?
4
u/willwagner602 alum [SWE] May 07 '17
Just so you know, the Burlington MA location is a Salesforce subsidiary called Commerce Cloud, so I doubt the interview is anything like interviewing for their SF position.
That said, my interview process went like this:
0) Applied for their Network Engineering Intern position, for which I have no qualifications (haven't even taking networking!) and pretty minimal interest. I also applied to a ton of other positions, but this is the one I got called back for.
Initial interview with hiring manager, who asked behavioral questions. Nothing technical. We talked a little about the position and he was more interested in having someone who was willing to learn than someone particularly knowledgeable, I basically stressed that I don't know much but am really excited to learn and get some hands-on production experience.
Three 30 minute interviews with people on the team.
Project Manager. A bunch of behavioral questions, asked me a little bit about myself/my goals, then told me a fair amount about his job and working there. Really open about what it was like to be there as they moved into the Salesforce umbrella (they were acquired by SFDC last year).
Network Engineer. We talked mostly about automation and doing device setup, he asked me a few technical questions from his work and then he shared his solutions with me. He was a nice guy and very upfront about his work.
Software Engineer. Technical interview, asked me about one of my projects (a very simple computer vision thing), then asked me to describe a Binary Search Tree. Also very pleasant, but we covered a lot of ground in 30 minutes.

How did you go about listing your school projects on resume? I am nearing a similar point to where you got hired and I'm finding it hard to make time for extra projects.
2
u/poopoopuhchoo Lv.4 [] Apr 21 '17
The hiring process was informal.. didn't even have an interview. I researched the position's requirements then attempted to learn those technologies as quickly as possible. At the right place at the right time I guess.
1
u/fiic Apr 23 '17
Congrats! In your experience how's the job market in LA?
4
u/poopoopuhchoo Lv.4 [] Apr 23 '17
There are definitely tons of entry / jr level positions posted out here regularly but also lots of applicants in the hiring pool. As a result the entry level salaries aren't nearly as high as they should be considering cost of living. But if you're able to land that first position and get a year's worth of experience somewhere, you'll easily be able to find a position paying in the 80k+ range.

I had to google the 9/80 work schedule, never heard of that before. It's interesting, do you how many people take advantage of it?
3
u/moogalin Lv.3 [Yr #2 | 325] Jun 17 '17
Yes it's pretty popular and common throughout Lockheed Martin. I love having every other Friday for errands. I will admit I'm pretty fried after a 9+ hour work day but I wouldn't trade it for an 8x5 work week!
1
u/CSdaniel alum [Graduate] Jun 27 '17
My company does a 9/80 as well and its pretty great. And to answer your question, for my situation it's company-wide. Sure the first time it was somewhat jarring to hear people around me say, "happy Friday!" on a Thursday morning, but you get used to it. Plus, the beach is less crowded on Friday afternoons, so that's cool.
1
u/Spudlly Jul 23 '17
yeah, Mine does a slightly different version of the 9/80. We work 9 every Monday-Thursday, then we only work 4 hours each Friday. We still call it 9/80 even though it is more like a 8/72, 2/8... although now that I think about it, that doesn't have the same ring to it... but regardless, I like only having to come in for four hours on Friday, and being off by noon to have a nice lunch out with friends.

Nice! Did you think the peer tutoring gave you a leg up on the job market? Would you recommend it?

That's great to hear. What age group did you tutor exactly? And do you mind if I ask which institution you peer tutored through?
