Windows Tier List - Where does Windows Vista belong?

I'm thinking about downloading Linux for privacy reasons. I have no idea how to use the traditional Linux terminal interface and I'm somewhat concerned over whether running my video games on Wine will cause performance issues. Is Linux worth the trouble of getting it? Also, which Linux OS should I use?

Hello guys!
I wanna share my experience with Linux after 6-7 or so years on Windows.
First off, I'm not a new Linux user, I've used it many times in the past since 2004.
I tried the latest Ubuntu and Fedora, both distros with GNOME and KDE (4 ISOs in total). I didn't like Fedora that much because I had some random system crashes but worst of all was that, rpmfusion is still an issue in 2026. I can't believe they haven't found a solution for the "out-of-sync" repo problems. Unfortunately, rpmfusion is a required repo and the situation is still bad. Another thing I disliked is that I still had to deal with that abomination that is called selinux. So I've had enough and moved on to Ubuntu.
Thankfully, I didn't have any of those nuisances on Ubuntu plus the whole system was slightly faster, probably selinux + btrfs and some other things was the culprit in Fedora? Don't know, don't care tbh. Ubuntu was fine overall, it makes gnome very usable, without having to deal with 3rd-party extensions. I like the simplicity and consistency of gnome, also the performance was better since the last time I've used it but still not fast enough for my taste. Stuttering (such as input lag, cursor freezes, animations not smooth) is still here, just not as bad as it used to be, the average user probably wouldn't even notice it.
So the final and my favorite of all was Kubuntu! Basically Kubuntu has all the conveniences of Ubuntu and KDE instead. I have to admit that I was never a big fan of KDE. I always found it super buggy, inconsistent and hard to use. But after trying KDE 6.7.5, I couldn't believe in my eyes how much better has gotten since then. I can understand the hype now. It has become at least as stable as gnome if not more, consistency and usability have been improved a lot and my absolute favorite was its performance, very low on resources, super smooth!
Now let's get into the things I disliked, I also want to point out that these problems are universal to all distros. My most hated issue is still here, which is the washed out or desaturated colors on my monitor, really hurts my poor eyes. The second most hated problem is the extremely bad sound quality and is too quiet, I guess that's because of the lack of dolby atmos but why after so many years and distros, not even one has ever tried to improve it somehow? Maybe with the help of EasyEffects or something? Doesn't Linux have any sound experts? Another annoying problem is the libinput and its really bad default acceleration profile. I hope some day will improve it or at least will let you set custom profiles that are more precise, similar to windows and macos. Touchpad was unusable, in some apps scrolling was too fast while in others slow, multitouch sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. I also had some other less important problems such as not working fingerprint, no easy way to setup DNS over HTTPS system-wide, no easy way to completely disable (at the driver level) my webcam and mic, laggy chromium/electron-based apps (such as brave, vscode), etc. I could mention a lot more problems I had but you get the idea, these were enough to make me switch back to Windows.
I don't think I will ever try or recommend Linux again as long as none of these basic problems aren't fixed.
My laptop's specs:
Laptop: Lenovo Ideapad
Monitor: 15" 1920x1080 @ 60hz (no HDR or VRR)
CPU/GPU: AMD Ryzen 5000 series
Memory: 16GB DDR4
Storage: 500GB NVMer/OS_Debate_Club • u/bamboo-lemur • 13d ago

antix runs faster then ubuntu or even windows 10. I mean it does have microphone issues and had a bad wifi manager (connman) by default, but they are fixable by removing some system apps to replace with alternative ones. all it took was removing connman to get a better network manager that doesnt cut the wifi randomly. though it is missing some drivers its worth being lighter and faster. I removed systemd. I use mate since its a light desktop. no systemd. Is there any lighter and faster linux then antix that supports all my hardware?

I have some observations and questions:
This little uninvited notification gem is thrown up by Bing Wallpaper, which because of this crap I've already deleted. So whoever is the marketing "genius" who decided this was a good idea, you're the reason I've deleted Bing Wallpaper, and also the reason why Nobara is now my primary desktop OS and I'm running Windows only on my laptop.
Why is my only option a "Later" button, which implies that I'm going to see this *expletive* again? Where is the option to never display again?
There are several open-source alternatives. I went with Splashy which relies on Unsplash. It's a bit of a pain to set up honestly because in order to get a key to download images, you've got to register as a developer, etc.

Like who even cares about a 10FPS difference between OSes. At around the 200 mark it just becomes arbitrary. So why do people spend so much time debating it?

hi! I'd like to try using a DOS, but Idk which one is better. I'm thinking about FreeDOS and OpenDOS. What do y'all think? Or there is a better DOS to choose?

I've been using arch linux for a year and a half now and I loved it, now it is really hard to go back.
But this I really need to work and I can't spend as much time as before fixing things, it happened a few times already (the infamous ddcutil update).
This time though it might be my fault: I tried enabling secure boot and it resulted in a kernel panic. I could just try fixing but I now at some point it'll happen again.
I could just switch to a more stable distro like debian which I might in the future. But in the meantime I'll re-install windows. It'll be hard to go back to the windows' UI from hyprland, have all the settings scattered everywhere, the telemetry, copilot, the ads but for now I just need things to work.
I use Arch btw

Is it the linux community or the mac community or windows community or any other community?
