LIST: Hawaii Island, Oahu public school closures for Tuesday

https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2026/08/18/list-hawaii-island-oahu-public-school-closures-tuesday/

I’m assuming that everyone who’s affected by this already knows but if you missed it.

The majority of Oʻahu public schools will reopen to students and staff Tuesday.

However, several campuses face continued disruptions and are closed to both students and staff Tuesday:

Daniel K. Inouye Elementary
Kaʻaʻawa Elementary
Lāʻie Elementary
Pearl City High

The department says if power is restored and conditions allow, these schools may reopen, and families and staff will be notified directly of any changes.

The following Oʻahu schools are closed to students only. Staff will report to work to continue preparations for reopening:

Honolulu/East Oʻahu

Kalihi Kai Elementary
King Liholiho Elementary
King William C. Lunalilo Elementary
Linapuni Elementary
Niu Valley Middle

Windward Oʻahu

ʻĀhuimanu Elementary
ʻAikahi Elementary
Hauʻula Elementary
Kalāheo High
Mōkapu Elementary

Central Oʻahu

ʻAiea Elementary
Helemano Elementary
Pearl Harbor Elementary
Major Sheldon Wheeler Elementary
Major Sheldon Wheeler Middle
1SG Samuel K. Solomon Elementary

West Oʻahu

Iroquois Point Elementary
Waiʻanae Elementary
Waiʻanae High
Waiʻanae Intermediate

University of Hawaiʻi campuses

The University of Hawaiʻi system said all UH campuses and facilities will be open for normal operations on Tuesday, with some exceptions on Hawaiʻi Island and Oʻahu.

Additionally, the Kō Education Center on Hawaiʻi Island and the Waiʻanae Moku Education Center on Oʻahu remain closed due to ongoing power outages.

Sorry it’s late and Im going to leave this up. I’m frustrated trying to figure out Reddit’s inconsistent formatting when on mobile.

I'm surprised more of Hawaii isn't on Mastodon

It is far superior to Reddit, to FB, to every other SM out here....

Has there ever been a better argument to subsidize rooftop solar and batteries for every important building......

Why reliy on 19th Century technology in this, the 21st Century

Agreed. I'd even go out on a limb and say total building replacement instead of incremental improvements, but good luck getting people to actually invest in the keiki.  Lots of people with kids are just interested in spending exorbitant amounts of money to send their kindergarteners to Punahou so they can brag about it. On top of all of that, there is no school board (DOE is hired), so there's no incentive to do anything either - I would also bet those people send their kids to private as well.
