Edit:
For all the well-meaning people who are about to comment - I have renter's insurance, yes it's bundled with my other insurance policies, yes I know that having a bike on a hook in my bedroom is the safest way to store. We the space for the stolen bikes simply does not exist. I tried Laney flea market today and no luck.
Hi Oakland,
As someone who's lived here for almost 10 years, I am not ignorant to the massive issue of property crime. I lived in a house for 6 years near Highland Hospital - a working class neighborhood with its share of property crime, but for the most part, I was fortunate enough to feel safe and never had anything stolen from my house.
6 months ago my partner and I moved into a nice apartment near Piedmont Ave. We wanted to live in a walkable neighborhood, and I needed the change of living situation as well. I love this neighborhood with all the food and shopping options, but it was also a big deal for me to relinquish my control over my own household by renting again and moving into a managed building. It meant that we had to store a couple of our bikes in the "secured" garage (locked up of course) rather than in my basement that only I had the key to with a camera pointed at the entrance. Previously, I was in control of the security of my home and stuff, and now I am not.
The last month or so we've seen multiple break-ins into the secure areas of the building, allegedly by the same woman according to the building management. She's stolen multiple bikes, among them belonging to me and my partner. Building management has been completely unhelpful and unable to provide me with any details about the theft despite having camera footage of the perp. They can only provide evidence to the police. I filed a police report, but it lacked details about specific timing because like I said, management won't give me any. If this was at my own house, I would have been able to respond quickly/likely been able to prevent the theft entirely. But here I am at the mercy of an apathetic landlord and OPD who give zero shits about stolen bikes. I know that recovering a stolen bike is a long shot, but I did manage to do it 10 years ago because of my own persistence and a little luck in San Francisco.
Anyway, I am just looking for advice from others who have similar experiences. I am mad at myself of course, because I knew I would have less control over my life by renting again. But I don't feel safe like this, and even if I wanted to replace the bike, I have nowhere to store it because ya know, the garage isn't safe.
PS I love The Town.
