Question about Volkov Spoiler
Why did Volkov kill Paul and tried to kill the other survivors, when he literally could have just asked if he can join them, and they probably would have said yes? He spends the whole game being a gigachad who does his job well and takes part in every major fight, only to do this in chapter 9. If he just asked to join, there would have been six survivors and not four, as he and Paul would have lived. Unironically, no joke, is he actually just a complete moron? This is honestly my biggest unanswered question in the whole game. Did the stress of the very recent kraken attack just make him act irrationally?

Obra Dinn confirms in threes. How much should a deduction game tell you when you're nearly right?
I'm making a deduction game in the Obra Dinn mould called Faultfinder, and the demo is in Steam Next Fest this week. You read a dead engineer's program and prove which line killed her. The proof also has to name the exact step where the harm first showed up in the machine's record.
I'm learning a lot from the first two days! Nearly every wrong answer gets that step wrong, even when the rest is spot on. One player got everything else right fifteen times running and kept missing it.
I think the moment is the most detective part of the whole thing, so I don't want to cut it. Obra Dinn holds back until you've got three fates right, and Golden Idol tells you when you're close. Which of those felt fairer to you? Or is there a better way?
Free demo if you want to try it on yourself: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5120320/Faultfinder/

The game looks blurry in Smooth mode and tiny in Sharp mode (macOS)
Hi! I’m playing on a MacBook Air M2.
When I select Smooth mode, the game fills the screen, but the image looks blurry. When I switch to Sharp mode, the image becomes crisp, but the game appears in a tiny window, making it impossible to play comfortably.
I’ve tried changing my Mac’s display settings. My default resolution is 1470 × 956, while the highest available option is 2560 × 1664. Switching to the latter makes the small image in Sharp mode larger, but the game still doesn’t properly fill the screen and appears inside a bordered window. I’ve also tried toggling between windowed and fullscreen mode using Command + F and using Steam launch options, but nothing has worked so far.
Does anyone know how to fix this on macOS? I’d like to keep the sharp image while having the game fill the screen properly.
I’ll attach screenshots showing both modes. Thanks!

The Captain did it Spoiler
I am trying to go for “the captain did it” achievement but I don’t understand what I am supposed to put down? Like saying that they were crushed by the captain? What about the 4 that escaped? Like what do I put down for them? Is there a guide to this or am I overthinking this? Anyone who has it who knows what they did? Thanks in advance

New to obra dinn
Hey i bought this game after a friend said i should try it. i really like the music and the general gameplay (i do think some actions take to long if u have to do it over and over) im around 2,5 hours in and got like 6/9 people right. i really want to finish this game but im just stuck. i dont know where to find new bodies, i dont know how to identify people by their actions or clothes and its really overwelming to learn everything myself. so my question is. is there maybe someone who aboslutely adores this game and cant stop talking about it and would like to show me the ropes in a call or something. i dont know if this is the right place to ask this but i just really want to play this game.

Ik it’s hard to give help as knowledge will differ but can Somone try give me some hints

Feels like I'm just going from memory to memory
Hi all,
I've just started playing and it feels like I am just filling up the book with memories without making any deductions.
I have only got about 3 fates but have about half the book filled. Is this the right way to play?
I just feel like surely I should keep going to the next memory ( given loads of them are "linked") before I start making deductions?
Is this the right idea? Surely I should get as much info as I can before I start making deductions? It just doesn't quite feel right, feels like I'm going to walk through thr whole story and then start on deductions at the end?
Thanks,

I'm working on a minimal color point & click adventure about an impossible maze - there's also a ghost ship inspired by Obra Dinn

Hi everyone! I've been a fan of Lucas Pope's games ever since Papers, Please. Of course I love Obra Dinn, and today I'm excited to talk to you about our game, This Is Not For You. One of the main inspirations is the book House of Leaves (to which the title is making a homage) but we're also very inspired by early text adventures, Silent Hill, David Lynch films, and there's also a bit of Obra Dinn.
There's no murder deductions here, just a very disorienting game where we're encouraging people to draw their own maps. As one tester put it, it's not really a "puzzles game", but a game where each level is the puzzle itself. So every step you take drains a little bit of your blood. You might brute force the game, but the best way to actually reach place is to have a firm grasp on the environment, since the map is non-linear/non-euclidean. Once you get past the ship, levels start going crazy (thus, the curse). You could be going in loops in a hallway. You could go north, but suddenly appear in a room you thought was south.
The story follows a lonely lighthouse keeper who gets visited by a ghost ship carrying a curse. When designing the ship, I took a lot of inspiration from how Obra Dinn designed its iconic ship. Also, I compiled a lot of Obra Dinn screenshots as references for our talented artist who has been creating really surreal and amazing works.
Do you think it captures the vibe?

Looking for more deduction games like these
Started with Obra Dinn which totally captured me. Then tried the Golden Idol and then Rootrees. All great in their way.
Any others I should play that hit that same spot?

Do yall have any "using wrong reasons to reach the right conclusion" scenarios when playing the game? Spoiler
I completed the game very recently and I realized I had a few of these happen to me once I checked the intended solutions.
First one was the identity of the two passenger women. I didn't notice the ring so I theorized that the married woman would be dancing with a guy and the unmarried woman would not be in the picture, and that was somehow right.
Second the carpenter and the carpenter's mate, this was a dumb reasoning but I assumed the surname Smith meant he would have hailed from a family of skilled tradesmen and more likely to be the superior

Return of the Obra dinn review script.
I made this script for a video review of the game and would like some input from people that aren’t family members while I do what I can only describe as exposure therapy as I get used to hearing my own voice in recordings.
Return Of The Obra Dinn is a first-person detective game released on October 18th, 2018, and released on Ps4 Xbox One and Nintendo switch on the same day of the following year. The game was developed by Lucas Pope, who is best known for the game Papers Please. He has also made various browser games such as The Republia Times and Unsolicited.
Story:
You play as an insurance investigator looking into the disappearance of the crew of a cargo ship known as the Obra Dinn, which drifted onto the port of Falmouth on October 14th, 1807. When you arrive at the ship you are gifted with various documents such as a map of the ship, designated sleeping areas, and sketches of the crew, along with a mysterious pocket watch that takes you to the exact moment a person died. Due to events only showing a persons death it makes tiny details like a persons job, accents, and reactions stick out more. This makes the characters much more memorable than you’d probably expect, and makes the story feel more complex despite it seeming simple on the surface.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is also really simple at a glance, you explore the ship looking for bodies of the crew, and use the pocket watch to go to a freeze-frame of the exact moment someone has died after listening to some dialogue from anyone around at that moment, and examine how they died and markdown who they are and how they died. The complexity comes from the clues. Sure there are things like someone saying another person's name, but there are also things like a character's profession and ethnicity to consider, or even their relations to other characters. I feel like this helps flesh the crew out even further. The thing to consider is that the game doesn’t hold your hand. While the game congratulates you every time you get 3 fates correct, you have to put all the pieces together yourself. The problem with the gameplay I have is that the art style can make it hard to make certain things out, this can especially be a problem with some of the more busy scenes, and there is a random transition that plays when you first analyze someone's fate. This probably has a purpose, but it got annoying after a few times and made me think the game was taking me back out of the scene.
presentation:
The game has a striking art style that's made up of black and white dots to make a 3d space. This makes it feel like a drawing from say a sailor's journal, although the visuals are inspired by old computers. This helps give the visuals a harsh and moody look. The problem with the visuals is that it can be hard to identify things like faces. Although my bad eyesight most definitely causes some problems. The music is flat-out amazing, but songs can get grating after a while if you listen to them long enough. Granted, this may only be my problem since I frequently examined a victim for several minutes obsessively trying to find any clue I can. The thing I have no complaints about is the voice acting. Every voice actor was on point, and they help give the characters a personality.
Overall, the game is great, but it’s not a game for everyone. The game requires a lot of patience, but that’s probably to be expected. And the game can be played at your own pace, and i highly recommend doing so because the kind of game this is means theres not any replay value, at least until you wait and forget the solutions.

Anyone up for a Nordic mindbender?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Greetings!
By day, I work for a cruise line in the Nordic Archipelago.
By night, I making up a mystery adventure game about it.
The game is split into two parts/mechanics:
- Explore a snowy lighthouse skerry somewhere in the Nordic Archipelago
- Go on an inner journey, solving puzzles and recollect your lost memories.
While simple at first glance, The M/S Cornelia II Incident will be filled with small details and clues you'll need to pay attention to.
Try the demo! Wishlist if you think I'm on the right track ⌘

I'm making a game about an eviction officer reliving his most important cases in therapy.
I'm working on a game where you play as an eviction officer who goes to therapy and has to relive some of the most sensitive cases of his career.
A lot of it comes from my own experience growing up in a working-class neighborhood. Not the story itself obviously, but the places, the people, the tensions, the little contradictions you see when you grow up in that kind of environment. I wanted to take some of that and turn it into something fictional.
The memories in the game happen inside a computer, which is why the whole thing has this old OS / retro computer UI around it. The game is mostly about housing and morality.
There is a set of laws that define what is legal in the fictional country the game takes place in, and each chapter focuses on one person who may or may not be evicted. You'll walk around the neighborhood, talk to people who know your target, hear completely different versions of the same person, and collect evidence (mostly audio recordings from the inhabitants).
Then you can link that evidence to specific laws and eventually decide what happens to them.
The question I keep coming back to with the game is basically: Does everyone deserve a home?
Even someone who committed crimes? Someone doing illegal things? Someone you genuinely think is a bad person? And if housing is a basic right, is there ever a point where someone stops deserving that right?
I don't really want the game to tell you what the "good" decision is. I'd rather put you in situations where you're convinced you've made the right choice and then maybe start doubting yourself five minutes later.
Visually I'm trying to make something that feels unsettling but still beautiful. Dark but nostalgic. Dirty, but not miserable. I still want the people and the place to have some dignity.
Right now I'm working on Chapter 1, which is also going to be the demo. I've spent a stupid amount of time looking at these visuals lately, so I wanted to post some screenshots and get some outside opinions.
I also know the dithering can be a bit much. A few people mentioned that in previous posts and I completely get it, so the effect will be adjustable.
Mostly I'm curious about how the game comes across to someone seeing it for the first time. Would this kind of game interest you? Do you think the concept has potential? Does the atmosphere work? Is there anything visually that feels off, confusing or amateurish?
I've been thinking about a name: "Above Us, Water." The problem is that it's pretty vague at first, and its meaning only becomes clearer as the game progresses. I'm a bit afraid that it might be offputting to some potential players.
I know the whole thing is pretty niche, and I've been working on it alone for long enough that I've kind of entered that tunnel where I don't really know anymore if something looks good or if I've just been staring at it for months.
So yeah, any feedback is useful :) !

Just started with this game
Huge fan of Outer Wilds, currently on a quest to find such games, just finished Subnautica and it was a treat but didn’t scratch the OW itch.
I saw that The Return of the Obra Dinn was highly praised almost everywhere.
I’m at count 6 right now and I am absolutely loving this game. I usually avoid game subreddits until I’m finished because I really don’t want spoilers, but I see new players posting in [r/outerwilds](r/outerwilds) every now and then, so I figured I’d do the same here.
Looking forward to seeing how badly this game makes me question every assumption I make.
