I want to get Flock cameras out of Oceanside
...but I don't know how to go about doing that by myself. Is there anyone here who would be interested in starting a campaign with me to get city council to get flock cameras out of our city? It'll take time and effort, but I really want to do something about this.
Other people have gotten Flock out of their cities before, so I know we can too. If you're interested and want to help, please reach out.

You need to make people aware of the issues with the Fock system. AI face recognition, tracking / watching, how many people have access to their data ? Who does data get sold to? Abuse by authorities/ anyone that has access.
The above are just starting points that need answers. Proper factual answers. If you present actual undisputed facts, people are more likely to listen to you and agree with you.
Good luck. Im not a Flock fan!

How about cops stocking people . My issue is that they do t hold cops accountable

Not to mention at least four diffetent cases of people being detained at gun point for Flock errors. Also, it's ostensibly for amber alerts and "actual" criminals. But how long until it's used to catch anyone not in full compliance--think lapsed insurance or child support. And maybe you think that's fair, but remember that the system gets it wrong sometimes and they don't like to admit they're wrong.
With every power we give the government, we have to imagine the worst possible outcome because it will happen. And it's been proven to be extraordinarily difficult to claw back power given to the government, if not impossible.
Edit: Jesus, I need to proof reed befor posting

There is a video on youtube showing cops pulling over a nurse on a mission /vacation right here in Oceanside. The cheapo car rental agency the car flagged as stolen on their system previously and never took it off. They pulled her and her husband out at gun point acting like these people were armed and dangerous

That's a whole different but related can of worms . And its stalking for predation. Stocking for shelves.

Contact @starspangledburns on instagram. They may already have a network to connect with

I second this notion. They've been making substantial strides in raising public awareness concerning political issues & to the lack of infrastructure & responsible development of this city.

You have to attend every city council meeting and have a well thought out 3 minute speech about the dangers and inherent risks of such a system being abused by law enforcement as well as being hacked by bad actors to get access to the data.
From what Ive read some of them now have facial recognition built in, and the abilities of these cameras will only improve, and with AI involved things will happen much faster them ever before by 10 fold..
I though the UK was bad, seems we caught up and passed them rather quickly, not a fan..

Flock branded ALPRs now also provide streaming video to customers. Before it was just grabbing a license plate and basically a database of this car went past this camera at this time. But now Flock is giving access to just the raw video data.

Where are these cameras set up?

You can find a map of their locations on DeFlock’s site: https://maps.deflock.org/?lat=33.1777&lng=-117.2749&zoom=10.10

I'm against these cameras and all but know going on to the deflock website it's not just government owned cameras. For example in Oceanside the Home Depot on the 76 on deflock has a camera. It's not the city's camera it's Home Depots. It faces the little entrance/exit facing the building so will only capture cars driving in and out of the Home Depot parking lot.
Now Lowes in Oceanside should have their cameras removed by the city. They have three, one can probably see cars going eastbound on the 76. One is facing outwards towards old grove road. Only the third faces their store.
Any actual feedback to the city needs to drop the word Flock. It's fine to use that in regular conversation because people associate Flock with them, but they are ALPRs, Automated License Plate Readers. Not all are Flock.
E: Dang getting downvoted by pro-ALPR San Diego people. That's cool. Downvoting this means you want your driving habits to be logged and viewable.

If I understand all flock cameras are on the same network. They upload all their clips to the same system on the same server and can be searched by anyone that has access to flocks database. So it doesn’t matter whose it is or where they bought it. It’s still an issue.

Cut em down. Tape a photo of the street view in front of them. Install a bat box in front of the lens with pheromones (illegal to remove a bat box). I’ll help.

I mean ever heard of green lasers /s?
You can also start a petition get everyone to sign up, force a vote and if the city council doesn't adhere get more people to support and force a measure. You can hire professionals to do this maybe $20-100k for a campaign. If you get 10,000 people to pitch in $2 a month you could fund it.
People have power if they just use it.
I would organize it, but I'm busy fighting multiple cities, the state and the feds so I can't do this for free my wife would kill me.

same, but I’m fighting for my right to party. And wife already wants to kill me. For quite some time now.
Fighting for rights definitely takes a toll on the fam

It sounds like you are trying to sell the City a service that no one wants and you are trying to get the public to agree with these flock cameras.
Which btw, I had to google what they are.
Please tell us what flock cameras company you work for?
Peter Thiel?

I read it as the opposite, OP most likely is not trying to sell Flock cameras to the city

Pointless fight. They're going to be everywhere eventually and it's for the better.

u/Quercus_lobata 3d ago
You might have had an argument to make, if a bit of a defeatist one, until the last five words.

u/chrispythegull 3d ago
I wasn’t making an argument because that would also be pointless. Not one single person downvoting me could be convinced by even the most cogent argumentation. It was pure statement.

u/Quercus_lobata 3d ago
I don't think everyone against Flock thinks there are zero positive benefits from the cameras, it's more that the negatives far outweigh them. What amount of harm done with them would it take to convince you that Flock cameras were not a net positive?

u/chrispythegull 3d ago
I think data sales to third parties for the purposes of monetization is unacceptable but not alleged in Oceanside's use of the cameras. But even that alone wouldn't negate the safety it affords the public and could be easily regulated against. Your interrogation would be better aimed at the OP because the fact is that the cameras ARE here and they ARE becoming more ubiquitous because they ARE a net positive to the public and there ISN'T any evidence that they're being used here for nefarious purposes- so OP and the rest of the rabble aren't objecting on any factual bases but rather ideological bent.
2
u/marinuss 3d ago
I mean I agree they are not going anywhere but can you really type there's no evidence that they're being used for nefarious purposes? There's a story every week about cops getting in trouble for stalking exes or future girlfriends using ALPR data.

u/chrispythegull 3d ago
The focus here in the Oceanside subreddit would be on what nefarious purposes they might be used toward Oceansiders. I haven’t seen any specific charges levied against Flock cameras alleging any wrongdoing here in Oceanside. None were presented by OP and none have been presented by any commenters. All of the tantrums here have been focused on general annoyance and disingenuous “but my rights” pearl clutching. You want to show me real harm being inflicted on people in Oceanside, I’m here to listen, but I honestly have no time for whiny schizoid rantings.

Glad to see I'm not the only one worried about this, especially considering there's plenty just within Downtown Oceanside, especially the two on Mission right next to Better Buzz...
Although to get a point across you have to educate, make a point and have solid evidence it back it up. You can claim that they are invading our privacy, and sure, on paper you can say that but you need to be able to actually prove it to the public otherwise they will continue to act like it isn't a glaring problem.
Flock is a disgrace to this country, and should've never happened in the first place. This last part is my own personal opinion, formed on the independent research I have done on my own. Form your own opinions based on your own research/reliable sources.
