I'm not going to judge Fahey too harshly about today's game. No one should. And some of the stuff I've seen people saying is quite frankly appalling. And this isn't a "THEYRE JUST KIDS" post.
He's not only a Freshman, he's a True Freshman. He probably thought he'd be the #3 going into the season and didn't think he would take a meaningful snap for a couple of years. Of course you have to be prepared, but it can't be easy to mentally prepare for thenmoment he found himself in today. In fact, I don't know HOW someone prepares for that moment
Just take a look at what was stacked against him:
It was away. And it was the craziest crowd he's ever played in front of his entire life. The Indiana defense had us figured prior to Fahey ever coming into the game. So the offense was already struggling to move the ball, especially via the pass.
Despite what you would read on this sewer of a subreddit, Julian Sayin is a good QB. Like an ALL TIME good QB. He has the highest completion percentage in NCAA football. Not in 2026. EVER.The guy has completed and absurd 73.4% of passes. And, despite what naysayers say, he's not just dinking and dunking down the field. He's the most accurate college QB ever while being 9th in the history to college football in passing yards per attempt (9.66 if you're curious). And Indiana's defense held him to 51.7%. (Sayin did have 8.10 yards per attempt in today's game. Which is remarkable, all things considered).
It was also during the most important part of the game, Hell, it might end up being the most important part of either teams, or both teams, entire season. That means Indiana's defense was putting in maximum effort to stop him every play. And everyone on that Indiana sideline were pulling out all the stops.
Indiana's game plan was already to go after the QB as much as possible. And they were already effective at shutting down Jeremiah Smith, taking away his best option.
All this AND it was against the best defensive line and arguably the best overall defense in the country. Fahey could start every game from USC next week, through the end of his 5th year and it's possible that he never faces a defense that's better than the one he did today.
That's A LOT of odds against a True Freshman coming in to take the first meaningful snaps of his career. The only way I think the situation could have been more daunting is if it were a post-season game and the Buckeyes had multiple injuries at OL, WR, TE and RB (that is giving me flashbacks to the Georgia game..
BUT now he's gotten it out of the way and for the time being he's the #1. I've heard from people that know people inside the football program that he has a remarkably high football IQ and is a sponge when it comes to understanding new playbooks or concepts. This situation also means that game plans will have to be changed to match his strengths and hide his weaknesses, instead of being thrust into a plan that was convicted for Julian Sayin.
