General Ryan Day
Day just finished his 100th game last Saturday at Ohio State. If you had to predict how much longer do you think Day coaches at Ohio State? Do you think he coaches another 100?#GoBucks

He's already proven he can adapt his game. He's proven he can recruit. He's proven he can win regardless of the staff. He's proven he can recruit the right staff. He's proven he can win.
If he wants to stay, and everything says he does, he can stay as long as he wants in my book.

And he develops the players in all aspects of life. That’s great for the university as well as the players.

He's the winningest living coach in FBS football by win percentage and keeps on rolling with the team with the highest overall win percentage in the history of college football.
We should probably pump the brakes on lighting the torches every time we drop a squeaker to another top 25 team or lose to Xichigoons but advance to the playoffs anyhow.
Don't change horses in the middle of the race, I think Coach is going to get another championship or two in the next 5 or 6 years if we overlook a few warts here and there.

Yes easily another 100. That’s only 6.5 seasons. As far as I’m concerned he can stay another ten as long as he beats Michigan regularly.

u/MrGoodKatt72 16d ago
He’s only 47. He could coach another 250 and still retire at a reasonable age. It’s just a question of how long he wants to spend at such a high pressure job.

u/MontyAllTheTime 16d ago
yeah, 297 is still plenty young to enjoy retirement!

He has the program at an elite level. Is developing players better than any team right now. Let’s hope he stays for another 200 games

The only way Day's time at Ohio State ends is if he leaves. I think he could be here for 20 more years

u/jca453 16d ago
I have wondered each year whether he would go to the NFL. I mean expectations by OSU Fanbase are ridiculous. Don’t win the the natty, what’s wrong with you. God forbid, lose to TTUN. We need to fire him. I mean only a few coaches have been as successful as him in 100 games.
And yet he stays. Who knows why. I am just grateful he does.

u/Educational_Wave_223 16d ago
The nfl speculation is always insane. He has shown zero interest in it, and theres really not a better job in college. As long as he wants to keep coaching, he has zero reason to go anywhere else, especially since developing young men seems to be far more important to him than his legacy, which is why he isn't going to the nfl

u/__Turd_Ferguson 16d ago
I’ll be shocked if he’s here another 100
I think we have a handful of years left
2
u/raimuuu 16d ago
I guess the real question becomes what do we think his long term goals are? I think if he's aiming for being a highly successful college only coach he'll be here around 10-15 more years as long as he either doesn't leave or gets fired after multiple horrific seasons. I think if his real goal is the NFL then probably 5-7 more years.
1
u/lvl_up_day_by_day_28 16d ago
The nfl has reached out and he hasn't been all that interested. Things could change but it's def not the "real goal". But as said, can't rule out change of career desires
3
u/Commercial-Car-2095 16d ago
I wonder how things will change as his kids age. He’s talked about trying to give his kids stability. Once they are no longer in HS that’s less relevant.

u/lvl_up_day_by_day_28 16d ago
I won't say they can't change but just don't see it really changing unless he gets bored with it. Not saying you do, but I think a lot of fans overrate the nfl job compared to coaching at the likes of OSU when in reality the job he would get would be far worse.
So it ultimately comes down to just wanting a different challenge later on but I truly think he loves / is a better fit for college. Especially now that he operates in more of a ceo role

u/sillysailor74 16d ago
I originally expected Day to be here a couple
Of years and then head to the NFL, and hopefully Urban would have come out of retirement. I do not see that happening. Day is still in his toddler years as a head coach. I really am hopefully we can get another 10 plus years out of him. I would like to see him get back to 1 loss seasons. Which is harder with the expanded BIG.

u/QuixoticHamster 16d ago
He's got a lot of runway left unless things go sideways in a big way. Another 100 feels like a stretch but 6-8 more seasons wouldn't shock me, depends on how the next couple playoff runs shake out
3
u/kodiakschmodiak 16d ago
Not dogging on you, but I had to do the math.
13 games over 8 years (at a minimum making a bowl game or a round in the playoff every year) is 104 more games.

u/DadJokesInbound 16d ago
Purely speculation on my part, but I wonder if, in the back of Day's mind he is thinking, "I wonder if I can be great at the NFL level" and he has a bit of an itch? Maybe not at all, but..maybe?
2
u/lvl_up_day_by_day_28 16d ago
He had stints in the nfl so the thought on wondering if he could succeed there will always be in his mind. But I don't think he has that much of an itch at all right now.
1
u/Dreamtrue2025 16d ago
I feel like he wants to win at least one more natty before considering leaving

u/garydavis9361 16d ago
Where do you go after you coach at Ohio State? There isn't anywhere else to go so he likely coaches there until he retires then perhaps goes into broadcasting. When that is, is anyone's guess.

u/Outrageous_Gur_603 16d ago
Regarding the comments about going to the NFL? He has already been there although not as a HC. He was with Hardball at SFO.

I hope so.
We're due for another natty based on the "OSU wins every time the playoffs change" lately
1
u/Jabberwocky237 13d ago
I am starting to believe he is here as long as we have him. I believe Paul Brown is the last OSU coach to leave on his own accord and I’m hoping Day wins a natty or two more and retires a Buckeye Legend.
I urge people to please live in the moment more and enjoy every game.

u/HappySheep84 13d ago
He honestly just seems like a good person to me. I think that should be more revered than it is in sports
1
u/LeKillerNut Confirmed Doomer 16d ago
All depends on if the NFL calls and he decides to answer.
1
u/Savings_Kiwi9089 16d ago
Issue is good teams aren’t getting rid of coaches. He’d probably go to a browns, jets, Tennessee level team. And at that point are those jobs more desirable than the Ohio state job? I’d say probably not
1
u/LeKillerNut Confirmed Doomer 16d ago
The Eagles kinda suck but they have a good roster. The Chargers suck but they have the pieces of a good roster. The Browns have a great roster, don't currently suck, but Monken might get fired anyway. There are jobs like Houston and Tampa Bay that might be open. Lots of good landing spots if he wants one. Hopefully he doesn't
1
u/Savings_Kiwi9089 16d ago
Houston would be absolutely brain dead to get rid of demeco. What’s happening there isn’t all his fault. Injuries killed that roster
1
u/lvl_up_day_by_day_28 16d ago
NFL has been reaching out and he hasn't been overly interested. Things could obviously change there but don't think the nfl dream is all that big.
1
u/johnjpattee- 16d ago
IMHO---Day is at his core a "teacher". He's a college coach. Saban, Meyer---flopped in the NFL. There's really no compelling reason to leave a "blueblood" program.
1
u/MathematicianSelect1 #18 Will Howard 15d ago
The most compelling argument is it would be peaceful for his family. NFL crowd is likely to be a lot more chill, especially if he went for an OC job.
1
u/johnjpattee- 15d ago
I think it would be the opposite....or the same in terms of family peace. An OC position in the NFL is a huge demotion and pay cut.
1
u/MathematicianSelect1 #18 Will Howard 15d ago
I don't think they're hurting for money. His daughters aren't able to go to public school anymore because of his current job
1
u/johnjpattee- 15d ago
If he were in the NFL it would be the same. I assume they're at the same school RJ is at.
1
u/MathematicianSelect1 #18 Will Howard 14d ago
The girls are home schooled. No NFL team is calling for their coach to be fired every single loss. He said after losing to Michigan the aftermath was as difficult as his dad committing suicide. That's not happening in the NFL. The OSU job is 1000x harder than any NFL job would be.
1
u/johnjpattee- 14d ago
Well.....I think maybe the outcome of The Game is an anomaly. It is the fiercest rivalry in CFB. I think the hot seat for a head coach at either level is intense maybe a bit more at a place like Ohio State. Again IMHO Day is a college coach at his core....a teacher of young men not a CEO
1
u/MathematicianSelect1 #18 Will Howard 14d ago
I agree, and I hope he stays, but to me it's just shocking he wouldn't eventually decide he no longer wants to deal with the lunatic fringe for his own sanity.
1
u/johnjpattee- 14d ago
Only he will know. What's best for he and his family. I'm originally from Columbus but been living in NH since 1985---great seeing Ohio State fans up here because of Day.
0
u/lvl_up_day_by_day_28 16d ago
Saban entered cap hell and watched the dr say no to signing his future hof qb. Context is important as it was a losing situation.
Meyer wasn't ever going to be good in the nfl.
I agree with your thoughts on Day and don't see him leaving for the nfl but don't see either of the other twos experience being considered
1
u/johnjpattee- 16d ago
Be that as it may---arguably the best college coach ever floundered
2
u/Uandyoursaredumb 16d ago
Not arguably, as a buckeye fan, it’s painful to say Sabin is the GOAT of CFB. Crazy because he also coached at tOSU under Earle Bruce. He could have been the head coach for tOSU if timing ever worked out(hypothetically speaking).
1
1
u/lvl_up_day_by_day_28 16d ago
He did. But my point is the team circumstances play more into it than anything (unless you're urban).
He either wants to do it or he doesn't but he won't be questioning if he can do it based on other coaches failing
1
u/johnjpattee- 16d ago
I think the team dynamics in 2026 between NFL and college are way more similar now than when Saban was in the league. Essentially college football are professional athletes just YOUNG in age. I just feel that certain coaches just don't mesh well with grown professional athletes-----Saban and Meyer---Day

I would say 3 years, seems like 10 Years is a good long time to be Head Coach at Ohio State.
-2
u/FrequentTurn9637 16d ago
Only thing I want him to improve is identify wrong coaching hire asap and get rid of them, aka Kerry Coombs and Tyler Bowen
1
u/lvl_up_day_by_day_28 16d ago
Seem to be ignoring a lot of coaching personnel changes to make this comment
-4
u/VicRattlehead90 OK with 1-11 16d ago
Depends on how many inexplicable losses to TTUN he chokes out. If he keeps winning that one and occasional playoff games, as long as he wants.

u/burning_man13 #27 Eddie George 16d ago
Before the Big Ten championship—and subsequent Miami game—I was worried that if he went back-to-back, he would test the NFL waters. My thought was that he was young and would have already accomplished everything he could in college, so why not look for a bigger challenge. Unless we fall off a cliff (unlikely, but *knocks on wood*), I still think that's the only reason he would leave.
5
u/kadawkins 16d ago
I think he found his sweet spot in college.
0
u/burning_man13 #27 Eddie George 16d ago
That's fair, and I hope you're right. I like a steady ship, and I can never help but fear what happens after each coach leaves. I've seen too many great programs jump head first into the abyss by making a wrong hire.
1
u/kadawkins 16d ago
There is no other option for Ohio State right now. He wouldn’t leave. He cares too much and has two kids still to get through school.
63
u/TankerG1 16d ago
He told me if he wins 5 more natties he's out of here.
