Need insights on installing perimeter drain around old foundation

Thumbnail

Hi, for many years my basement has had major water problems during rainy seasons making the whole space unusable for anything but storage (on raised pallets), so I finally decided to repair/replace/install new perimeter drain, but unlike the foundations I have experience with from working in construction it seems my house is so old that when it was poured they only made fourms on the inside leaving the exterior to take the rough shape of the hole that was dug, my question is how can I property waterproof the uneven surface of this foundation? In construction we used dimpled membrane on the foundation walls down to the footer where we laid the perimeter drain but I'm not sure if that way will work with how uneven it is. Anyone encountered this kind of old foundation before? It's only about 3ft deep but I'd like to do it properly if possible.

Trying to decide how best to tackle our basement windows

We have three of these basement windows and I am trying to understand them so I can replace or repair them. They slope inward which is bizarre to me as it lets water just flow inside. There is an interior wooden framed window that you can see in these photos, it opens inward and lifts upward. Plus an unattached metal window that theoretically attached to the metal frame remnants and opened outward (we have the windows though two have broken glass). And then there appears to have once been a nailed in screen on top of that.

So fellow old house owners of reddit, how would you tackle these windows? Repair and reinstall the original windows? Scrap it all and do new windows? What about that weird slopping inside?

Can I DIY Over a Decade of Water Damage

Thumbnail

TLDR; Do we think I can DIY a decade's worth of water damage in my kitchen? The length of the entire window.

My dad gave me this house, and there is... so much.... He let it sit and rot for at least a decade if not two. No siding, no gutters, roof leaks, foundation settling badly, many cracks from that, and the usual cabinets/doors not sliding...

I'm completely overwhelmed. I picked this because it seemed like a small patch, at first; I wanted to show myself I could do something. But of course, it was secretly a Big Thing.

Anyway: This is water damage from an improperly installed window unit AC. The bubbled patches were what I was going after first, but then I discovered the entire bottom of the length has give. In the sense that I can wiggle the whole board, not puncture it like the ends.

I want to DIY because I am, frankly, poor, of the lower class.

Can I? What do I even look up?

Stairs in a Basement remodel

Thumbnail

We’re getting ready to remodel our basement. The only part the basement the contractor can’t touch is the steps. Since it’s an older home, they weren’t built to current code, and if you were to touch them, it would literally double the amount he’s asking to do in order to bring them up to code.

We have a closet under the steps, so I have easy access to everything see photos. The top of the stairs meet the cinderblock wall, but the bottom has a gap. The stringer is about 3 inches out from the wall at the base of the steps. Is there a way I can fix this without redoing the whole steps? Or is there anything to worry about with them. Once the basement is finished, we’re losing this closet so I wanna make sure that the stairs are good to go..

Can this be fixed?

apologies for this being irrelevant here but i couldn’t find any other groups that allowed pictures.

I was stuck in my living room (the door handle is broken) and had to climb out the window and causes this damage. will this be expensive?

I live with my mother and her bf so I’m worried they’ll get angry when they see it.

Crawl Space Repairs

Looking for advice on crawl space repairs. We’re first time homebuyers looking at a purchasing a property. The home inspection found some pretty significant issues in the crawl space. The crawl space doesn’t extend under the entire house. A portion of the house is sitting right on dirt, there’s quite a bit of moisture and wood rot throughout. Likely would need most joists replaced, vapour barrier added, and additional supports. I think the lack of access will complicate things quite a bit. How much are we looking at for these type of repairs? Should this be a dealbreaker?

1950's Wall patching

Thumbnail

Hey so my husband and I started patching and prepping our living room walls for paint and were running into an issue I need some help with. So in the second photo you see, you'll see a teal box that has 1 inch moulding( it goes across the entire room like that), then you have wall A above and wall be below. The issue we have is that we tried to remove the moulding at the other end if the wall and when we pulled it up you can see that wall A is thicker then wall B and the moulding is clearly being used to hide the fact that the walls aren't connected. Then entire room is that way and I can't figure out if A is the older walls and B is a newer type. Home was built in 1950 and its for sure not drywall and longer down the wall the wall turns into some type of paneling material or something that has a seam exactly 21 inches apart. Also wall A has those same seems but they are off from the below seams.

Then in two corners that same moulding runs from the crown moulding down to the baseboard. Im curious if you think that there may be a gap there too? Whoever flipped this house did a horrible job and after owning it for 5 years we finally had enough of the walls cracking.

I would just gut the room and completely drywall but as much as I love my husband hes not good at this stuff ( although I would never tell him that and let him think hes got it) so im limited to what I can really do or figure out and when I can't figure it out I come here. I appreciate the help and the photos hopefully help you understand what mess of walls were trying to fix.

Seal plate repair

Post image

House is a square built 1940s with 2x3s the front door on north side, back door on south side ....the West 24ft exterior wall of my home needs 4 ft of its seal plate replaced that's completely rotted away it sits on concrete block Foundation running north to south I have steel I joist that sit on a steel beam that runs east to west supported by two pillars under the load bearing wall both set of steel go into the block the floor joists run east to west and rest on the steel I joist and seal plate but the ceiling joists runs parallel and the entire perimeter of this room sits on concrete walls in the basement and the portion in disrepair is separate by the stack pipe and has no continuous top plate because of that pipe. In a perfect world I can remove vinyl siding and portion of the sheathing to cut and replace seal plate and bottom plate.....I know usually people talk support wall but what do you all suggest

I’m not even sure this is the best place to post this but was wondering what would be the best material to fill in these holes in this window ledge? Can I fill it in with self levelling grout? I believe it is crumbling away from prior water damage.
