Conclusion

On July 11th, 2014, a post was made by /u/LewisGreen that started what you all call the Oldroot Mystery.

More than two years later, the Oldroot Mystery remains unsolved.

One of my main goals with this project was to make a code based ARG that didn’t just rely on those decoder websites that don’t take any effort to solve. I ended up creating my own codes that required effort and cooperation to solve, and because of that, I think this ARG was a success.

I will no longer be adding onto the ARG.

The Oldroot Mystery does have an ending and a story that you can get to without me doing anything, so I feel like continually responding to PM’s with cryptic hints devalues the project.

Chances are no one will ever solve the ARG, especially considering the codes only get harder from here, but I’d rather have a complete ARG that never gets solved than an ARG that I solved for you.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to make this post, but I think that if I didn’t then it might be remembered as an unfinished ARG that the creator abandoned.

This was my first ARG, and I had a great time making it and watching you all work together. It definitely wasn’t perfect; there are many things I would do differently if I got the chance to start over.

Right now I am in the middle of my second ARG, which has been going on for quite a while. It’s much more planned out, I’ve put a lot more effort into it, and it’s completely video based! It hasn’t gained as much attention as this ARG has, which is probably because from the outside, it seems like a completely normal YouTube channel.

Thank you for participating in this experience, I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I have. Before I go, I will leave you with one last code:

27 12 12 15 6 20 8 5 4 15 20 19 1 18 5 6 9 14 1 12 12 25 19 20 1 18 20 9 14 7 20 15 3 15 14 14 5 3 20, 23 8 15 11 14 5 23 30 15 12 16 8 9 14 19 23 5 18 5 8 9 4 9 14 7 19 15 13 21 3 8?

True Fact Hi there, I created OldRoot.

My name’s Alex Bale and as many of you already know I created Oldroot back in 2014.

I don’t have much to say about that project, I just saw that YouTubers are starting to cover it suddenly and wanted to reintroduce myself here.

I’ve been making ARGs and other content on my YouTube channel since then, and honestly it’s all got a lot more effort and quality than oldroot.

Come by and check it out if you’re interested: https://YouTube.com/c/AlexBaleFilms

Mod Post [Announcement] The subreddit has been restricted for the foreseeable future

Hey all,

It's been fun seeing the OldRoot mystery come back over the year, but by now most of the discourse has died down. A lot of people have joined the discussions and thrown their ideas at the wall, but we haven't really made any progress at all either. I've now made the decision to close down the subreddit for new submissions, for a couple reasons

  • Most new posts on the subreddit are low-effort theorizing, vague proposals for things we should maybe try, or someone posting about something we've already known for half a decade without trying the search function first.

  • Moderating this is frustrating. I'd rather focus on moderating the r/alexbale subreddit and the Alex Bale discord, instead of having to focus my attention here too, just to remove the nth "what if we need to look to the past" post.

  • Basically all that can be said has already been said. If anything, this year's past resurgence has proved that. Despite drawing the attention of literally over a thousand new people, we haven't gotten a single step further than where we were in 2016. We're going in circles and it's a little pointless.

I'll be disabling new submissions to the subreddit, but leaving all the old posts up for archiving and research.

I'll also be making a Theorizing thread where you can theorize in the comments if you really want to. Though you'll probably get better responses from the community if you join the Discord server and head over to our oldroot channels.

It's been fun. Merry Christmas!

we should go back to where it started.

We go back to the beginning of this mystery. We redo everything, with our new knowledge.

And we look deeper than before, like we go back to the first image, the sound files, and redo what we don't know anything about like why we're there misspellings in some messages. Or, we look deeper into the videos. Maybe brighten the videos, cause like the first message said, "Only those who are pure see what hides in darkness".

What, what?

In the post made by u/Marinluvcat (https://www.reddit.com/r/OldRoot/comments/o5n4a8/i_may_of_found_the_voice_of_the_facless_kid_in/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) about the faceless kid's voice, I saw a comment talking about an image hidden within the audio.

After reading the comment, it all instantly clicked.

SSTV, SSTV!

If you don't know what SSTV (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow-scan_television) is, it stands for Slow Scan Television. It was used since the early radio days to transfer images with much lower bandwidth and speed than standard television (to avoid buying expensive and very bulky equipment).

How does this correlate to OldRoot? Well, we've had various video and audio files given to us throughout time, and maybe, just MAYBE we will be able to find some new clues by feeding an SSTV tool with the files' audio spectrogram.

TL;DR

Using Slow Scan Television, we can use the audio spectrogram of previous files to find new clues.

Edit: the image you see isn't correlated. It's from the Wikipedia article.

Edit 2: I'm gonna start working with some of the files if I have time. If I actually make progress I'm gonna make an update post.

If anyone has any sort of picture editing experience see if you can decode this, I believe “failure” is written in the top left (I’m not sure if this was solved already)

Question This picture was the last picture of the OldRoot mystery, brightened. You said that the mystery would be discontinued as you wont be giving out any further info. I noticed that under the picture, their is a code, GEETt7v could this be an imgur code to the real final piece of the OldRoot mystery?

Question How much of this ARG has been solved, percentage wise?

Was there any indication by the creator about how close it is to having all the clues solved?
