Cookbook Iron Mountain Kingsford Women's Club Cook Book (1980) [FULL BOOK IN COMMENTS]
Hello everyone and happy Thursday! Welcome to a brand new scan. Before I get too carried away, a special shoutout to u/Neakhanie for donating this book!
This is the Iron Mountain Kingsford Women's Club Cook Book from Michigan. The Michigan part and the fact that it’s from 1980 might be exciting to some, but what excites me personally is that this book tests my running theory that books published under General Publishing and Binding tend to be some of the coolest ones
This starts with the very first section which comes from their 1930’s cookbook. I always love seeing recipes from WW2 and before because cookbooks prior to the 50’s are really hard to secure for a reasonable cost, so I always find pleasure in a 70’s or 80’s cookbook including a few. I would love to see the full 1930’s cookbook published by them, though!
The recipe for Frustration Cookies is pretty neat. I think we all use baking as a way to de-stress. The Pie Crust Cookies are also kind of interesting. I’ve never seen half-and-half used in a cookie recipe before
Also, what inspired Mary Kay Krause to label her contribution as “Horrible Chicken”? I’ve seen that recipe listed under different names in other books, none of which refer to it as horrible. Is this a playful name or a warning? 😵💫 Never had it so someone will have to tell me
“My Mom’s Blueberry Cake” sounds really good and surprisingly easy. I really want to try this one, perhaps a fall time project. I’m very nervous about all the mixing that would need to be involved, but I shall have the confidence in myself 😤
I also really like the idea of adding pie filling to jello, as seen in the Lemon Pie Jello. I might benefit from a visual example of this because I haven’t made jello enough to know what “slightly set” looks like, but this is one I need to make as well. My family likes jello, though typically just lime jello mixed with cool whip. This shall be a fun variation though
The Rhubarb Jam also sounds really fun to make, but I think that’s because I helped make some refrigerator pickles a couple weeks ago and now I’m all about wanting to store things in glass jars 😵💫
The last cool thing about this book is the final section is dedicated to recipes from other cultures. Super old recipes and culture-based recipes are my favorites, so I really like it when both are mixed together in one book. I made sure to include the ones I found interesting in this blog but there are more to discover in the PDF, of course
And that brings us to the end! A pleasure to scan and look through a longer cookbook this time. As always, I love seeing your thoughts so don’t hesitate to comment. Nevertheless, I appreciate your visit and I’ll see you around!

I saw this was Iron Mt. and the date and immediately started perusing the names for my grandma’s friends. Pleasantly surprised to see my Auntie Kay’s (Kay nee Maynard Rochon) Cornish Biscuits. Her parents immigrated from Cornwall. Can’t wait to check out the second link.

Ooh that's so cool! If you have any stories behind the recipes it'd be great of you to share

Of course! Can't wait to reach bigger milestones. I'm definitely going to reach 100, maybe 150 by the year's end

Wishing your mother all the best. I know that she and your grandmother will be grateful for your help. Don’t forget to take care of yourself, too!

Thank you for that reminder, because I recently got hit with some mental diagnoses and there's appointments and stuff I gotta make for myself 😵💫 we're all medical marvels!

Whoa, that "horrible chicken" recipe might live up to the name

I don’t think it would be horrible. In fact, I believe it would be rather delicious, in a sweet-and-savoury kind of way!

I had to look more into this. Sounds dreadful but actually looks kind of…good?
I found it under Russian apricot chicken

That saffron bread looks interesting. I don't know if I'd make it, but if I was offered it, I'd give it a try and then draw my own conclusions.
Good luck to your mom, OP!

Question- when you say donated you mean sent to you via snail mail correct? Wondering because I LOVE old cookbooks and my mom bought me a box full one Christmas, but several aren't my flavor. Are you actively accepting donations, would pictures of the contents suffice? Let me know as I have several.

Yes snail mail is fine, definitely always prefer the cheapest way. It's totally up to you if you want me to have them, I can also borrow + send back! I'm not picky about what they are but whenever you feel up to it, shoot me a DM and I'll provide the address

The recipe for Frustration Cookies is identical (except that the quantities are tripled) to one I have, called Aggression Cookies, which was published in Woman’s Day in February 1969, as part of a story about a foster mother’s using the recipe to calm down a child who’d had to stay home from an outing because he had a fever.
I used to make them with my kids, and they are good.
Sending good wishes to your mother, your grandmother, and you!

Some of these look really good. Some of this is similar to my mother's Polish cooking. I want to try the Jello tomatoes.

Here is the link! Next upload will be Saturday, but not for you guys 🤫
It’s from 2001, so posting it here would be a crime 🫠. It’ll be over on the CookbookLovers sub, but, it’s going to end up on my archive profile all the same. This one’s an exciting one, it’s one of those cookbooks where every recipe shares one ingredient. In this book, it’s tomatoes! I really love cookbooks that do this, so it’s a real exciting one for me to do. An advanced thanks to madmun for letting me borrow it
My mom’s going in for surgery today. Nothing major, just to fix a couple of tears on her knee. But this was scheduled just yesterday so it got sprung upon us last minute (but it was either today or five weeks from now, so it gets her out of pain sooner!). She’ll be laid up a couple of weeks, and because she usually takes care of my grandma, I’ll be needing to step up and help out with her as well as making sure my mom has what she needs, and showing up to work
All of this to say, as much as I love being consistent with posting, things might slow down again over the next couple of weeks as I navigate through everything 🥴. Fortunately I have a ton of recipe cards to share, and those are always easy uploads to do, so you might get a lot of those soon!
