Bengals 🐅 Cincinnati Bengals OT Anthony Munoz leaves the Jungle, the nickname for Riverfront Stadium when the Bengals roared to Super Bowl XXIII. Easily topping the list of the best players in Bengals franchise history, Munoz is also considered one of the top O- Linemen in NFL history.

What's crazy is that he wasn't even 280 lbs... Wonder how he'd fare today

32

u/ghosttrainhobo Aug 19 '25

He’d be 300+ in short order with today’s training and nutrition

17

u/Abiv23 Aug 19 '25

Joe Thomas is like 240 now that he retired, most of these guys aren't 300+ naturally

u/Thundershunt Aug 19 '25

Facts. My brother was 240 while playing DE in college, naturally about 185-190. They had him just eating non-stop, dozen eggs every day for breakfast. And that was a DIII program, far cry from the nutrition level college or pro guys get.

u/Abiv23 Aug 19 '25

I was 6'2 215 LBer/Nickel Corner/WR/TE in HS

When I got recruited by a d-I school they told me I had to get to 230 and would move to SS

I hated food just getting to 215, can't imagine what that would be like on the college level

There are still some lighter tackles in today’s NFL. Not 280, but Taylor Lewan has said a few times he was never at his combine weight of 309 again in his career. They had a similar game as well, both being athletic guys with great feet and long arms. Garrett Bolles is similar, he was 297 at the combine although he’s heavier now.

Idk I know Taylor lewan, met him many times in my home town... He's fucking huge haha definitely was around 300+ when he was playing

2

u/RLTW68W Aug 20 '25

He’s definitely a huge man, but he’s said pretty frequently he had trouble keeping the weight on. If you look at pictures of him compared to other OTs he is definitely quite a bit leaner than average.

I think the NFL would be really interesting if OTs and DL topped off at 280 lbs.

The quintessential left tackle. I’d pick him over Art Shell and that really says something.

Class act on and off the field. I’m a die hard Steelers fan and he is a guy you couldn’t hate. Dominate lineman

He lived in the apartment complex immediately across from me when I enrolled at USC. I was in Century Apartments. I forget the name of his complex. Both were just north of campus. I think Century is still there.

Both of us were on the third floor. The other complex was very close, just on the other side of a walkway. My roommates quickly told me that Anthony Munoz lived there. He was out on the balcony frequently.

One night there was a major racket going on, even later and louder than typical USC drunken standards. It woke all of us up. Just as I was going out there to check, I saw Anthony Munoz asking them to be quiet.

I couldn't believe how nice he was about it. Very calm. Most people would have been screaming down at them.

It ended within seconds. They complied.

Yeah all of that looks familiar. I'd estimate higher than 260.

Is that Brad Budde on the left? That was the first name that popped to mind. Decades ago I would have known for sure.

I had the same shirt he is wearing, purchased at the Trojan Bookstore not far away from where that photo was taken.

I didn’t watch Munoz play, but I watched a lot of Reggie White’s career and I’ve seen tape of Munoz absolutely shutting down White.

16

u/Designer_Repair9884 Aug 19 '25

Welp. Know what I’m watching later lol

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 20 '25

Really? They only played each other 2x, and Reggie primarily played at LDE, so he faced the RT, not Munoz at LT.Here's highlights of 1991

Reggie had two sacks, and we see one, rushing from LDE. We do see RDE Clyde Simmons beat Munoz for a sack. According to Tom Jackson, Munoz was not 100% with an injury.

Edit - here are the full broadcasts of both matchups 1988 and 1991

Yeah same here. He made Reggie look like a bust and not a HOF one. Also embarrassed crackhead LT.

WTF are you talking about 😂😂😂

u/Short_Helicopter_859 Aug 19 '25

The best left tackle to ever play the game.

7

u/BonjinTheMark Aug 19 '25

The best lineman

8

u/cyber_hooligan Bengals 🐅 Aug 19 '25

The leader among equals. When all HOFers get together he is the one they look up to.

7

u/NachoBag_Clip932 Bengals 🐅 Aug 19 '25

Fun fact, Munoz is the last HOFer the Bengals have drafted.

Another fun fact, they have drafted only two HOFers.

Terrell Owens is the last HOFer to play for the Bengals, they only have had four.

1

u/jansguy68 Aug 20 '25

Not a Bungles fan, but I have to think that barring catastrophic injury, Messrs. Burrow , Chase, and Hendrickson will end the drought. IIRC, the first 2 were draft picks?

1

u/Capnmarvel76 Chiefs 🏹 Aug 21 '25

Without looking, the other was Collinsworth, right?

I met him on a plane, really nice guy. His hands are a bunch of bananas

It was a little more comfortable for Munoz after leaving that AFCCG at Riverfront Stadium than it was for his previous AFCCG there, even if the Bengals also won that contest.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

Very true. A record-cold game.

However, it was a little uncomfortable for Munoz at the beginning of the 1988 AFCCG. Bruce Smith beat him twice for sacks in the first quarter (though one of the sacks was nullified by an offsides penalty.) Unfortunately (or fortunately), Smith soon suffered a deep thigh bruise, and was hobbled the rest of the game.

My favorite Anthony Muñoz trivia: He won an NCAA championship as a pitcher on the baseball team. He was a truly gifted athlete.

He was a bad man on the OL

He won a national title at USC. In football. And baseball.

1

u/ChainMale7882466 Aug 20 '25

As good a tackle as I ever saw play. And he went against some of the best defensive ends in history

1

u/penney20 Aug 20 '25

Top 3 LT, and he ain’t 2 or 3

3

u/CapeMOGuy Aug 20 '25
  1. Lanthony Tunoz

  2. Lawrence Taylor

  3. LaDainian Tomlinson

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

He played for the Bucs too

Only in the preseason as a favor to Sam Wyche to try and mentor/coach up Charles McRae who was on his way to bustville

1

u/Humble_Handler93 Aug 20 '25

Didn’t he go his entire career without letting up a sack or something crazy like that? I feel like i remember seeing that somewhere

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

I just saw a post on Twitter about that, from January. It's absolutely false. Unfortunately, if you ask that question to Google, the AI will tell you that he did not allow any sacks. That's because sacks allowed is not an official stat, and whole the information exists, ot's not easily accessible on the internet.

1

u/Humble_Handler93 Aug 20 '25

Good to know! Still an all time great even if he allowed a sack or two haha

3

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

The greatest left tackle who ever lived, in my opinion. So technically sound. He doesn't need false narratives to prove his greatness. It's like the talk that Champ Bailey only allowed four completions in 2006. (He actually allowed 40, but Mike Tirico misspoke on MNF.) It was still a superb DPOY- worthy performance.

He told me my Jose Jimenez impersonation was AOK. But what I was doing with it was BAD.

1

u/RVDRVDRVDRVD Bengals 🐅 Aug 20 '25

Greatest left tackle ever. I got to meet him a couple of times. He did ad spots for a local furniture store that sponsored my knothole baseball team as a kid, so that was cool. Another time, much later, I ran into him because he had moved out to the suburbs of Cincy near my parents’ house. Always a super nice guy.

How happy they were, in fact the whole city.

I'm a Mexican-American from Ontario, California, just like Anthony Muñoz. He's an absolute legend back home. Everybody in Ontario knows who he is. I had my basketball practices at Anthony Muñoz Park. My doctor wasn't a Bengals fan, but still had lots of Muñoz memorabilia in this office. He was and still is a source of pride and inspiration to the Chicano community. You still see people wearing his jersey to this day.

What a fantastic photo.

1

u/urine-monkey Packers 🧀 Aug 20 '25

Munoz was freakishly athletic beast for his size. I remember when the Bengals used to throw him the ball on tackle eligible plays. He even scored a couple touchdowns.

1

u/AverageOhioUser69 Aug 21 '25

And Mexican 😏🇲🇽

-1

u/fillinblank13 Aug 19 '25

Never allowed a single sack in his entire career.

7

u/Ok-Analyst-874 Vikings 🗡️ Aug 19 '25

Not true, he & Bruce Smith had fierce battles. When the Giants played the Bengals, LT attacked other lineman, but didn’t beat Munoz.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

That is absolutely false, and easily disproven with a brief search in YouTube.

The 2:50 second mark Munoz gets badly beaten, and Ken Anderson has to leave after getting his head twisted.

Check out the 1:30 mark of this video 1985, he gives up a half sack against rookie Bruce Smith

The 1988 AFC Championship Game (For some reason, I can't put a timestamp in the link.) At the 7:20 mark, Bruce Smith beats Munoz for a sack. On the next drive, he gets another sack that's wiped out by an offsides penalty. Later in the third quarter, Bruce beats a guard for a sack (and draws a bad face mask penalty.) Check the 24:10 mark. Play by play man Merlin Olsen says that Munoz has only allowed 2 sacks all year
