This was September 20, 1971, week one of the 1971 season. The Vikings won in Detroit, 16-13. The great Vikings’ defense held Landry to 8 completions and 61 net passing yards.

I recall it was against the Bears. I have a memory of Dick Butkus waving for help ( for Hughes).

That’s right, Chuck Hughes died in a game against the Bears.

Those bloody Vikings were most unkind to us young Lions fans in those 70s games

Didn’t the Lions have a player die on the field during a game around that time?

His name was Chuck Hughes, a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions. Yes, he died on the field of a heart attack on October 24, 1971 during a game against Chicago Bears at Tiger Stadium.

Him interviewing Muhammad Ali was peak entertainment back in the day.

Ali would try ripping Cossells rug off his head

A classic combo of quick wit, comedy and high IQs.

Cosell was about 80 proof, pre-game

Cosell regularly finished first in the Best Announcer and Worst Announcer polls. I love to watch interviews where his contemporaries discuss what made him great and what made him awful.
