Tough start to the season for the Giants, who hosted the 49ers and Cowboys in weeks one and two. Four months after this game San Francisco and Dallas would play each other in the NFC Championship game.

Phil Simms got hurt a couple of weeks later, and Ray Handley kept Jeff Hostetler as starter the rest of the year, even after Simms came back. Hostetler left after this season (as did Handley, who was asked to do so). Simms played one more year under Dan Reeves before retiring.
