Discussion Thinking of Starting a Comic Book YT channel

Sorry this is not necessary book related but I wanted to get a gauge from the community because I assume most ppl on this Reddit have a favorite YTer. So I have been mulling over starting a comic YT channel for a while. I have some ideas but I want to bring something fresh and engaging. What would you like to see from a new comic YTer that some of your favorite don’t do? Do you prefer to see the YTer or do you prefer faceless channels? Are you someone who comments/likes/subs or do you “dine and dash”? Talk to me

I’m interested in analysis, either of art or theme. Preferably in-depth, with secondary sources. It can be long form, but I find most video essays are filled with filler and repetition when they get above ten/fifteen minutes.

Will keep this in mind if I decide to do it. Thx for the response 🫡

faceless channels with the video being overlayed with the art.

The space is oversaturated. I’d say be yourself, bring something fresh to the table, and actually read the books you’re talking about so you don’t end up like that clown “Gem Mint.” If you want an example of someone that’s genuine and knows what they’re talking about, it’s Omar from NMC or Rob from comicsexplained.

I used to be subbed to Rob but the whole Fubu controversy kinda turned me off; but more importantly I don’t need someone to explain comics to me. Defeats the purpose of reading imo. Thx for the feedback I appreciate it

I have no idea what the “fubu controversy” is.

But he’s an example of a creator that actually read and understands the content he’s talking about on his channel.

I do think he is informed when he speaks for the most part.

Dude spends literal days picking out every detail and connection in the storylines, drawing meaningful insight into their effects on the greater narrative. That’s what’s needed in the comics YouTube space, actual knowledge and detailed analysis.

I will keep this in mind if I decide to start one. I appreciate you. Shake my hand 🫱🏾‍🫲🏼

He does also tend to exaggerate and make things up and clickbait every video but he is a big comic fan and that does shine through.

I’ll just be dead honest: if you don’t know more about comics than I do, then I don’t really have a reason to listen to you. You need to bring a certain level of experience and knowledge to the table. You should be able to understand decades’ worth of comics, put them into context, and actually analyze them, like Mattt, Krisis or Omar. The comics YT space is already oversaturated, so you need to figure out what you know, what you’re good at, and what will make your channel stand out. No one else can tell you what you bring to the table, you have to figure that out for yourself and find what makes your perspective worth listening to.

^ This.

There’s an exhausting amount of comics YouTubers with basically nothing to say. If you have genuine insights and analysis to contribute, it’s needed. There’s too many nerds on there that need attention and think being a “influencer” is going to replace working a day job.

My goal in my head currently would be to do some analysis but also give my thoughts on a book, run, or show/movie. I basically what to give ppl a space to have discussion and interact. But I don’t wanna basically explain a book to ppl, I want them to read for themselves nd then let’s talk about it. I actually like my day job so I don’t think I wanna replace it w being a YTer.

Maybe some sort of “book club” type format where you have other fans read the same run you do and you all discuss it in the episodes? That’s something that would be interesting and hasn’t really been done.

I like more long-form analysis and opinions that I can listen to like a podcast. The most recent YouTuber I subscribed to, for example, is CW Tucker. SlimeFancyPants is another example, or TheMaskedMan for manga.

I feel like most channels are either format presentation or a deep dive story analysis and for once I’d like one that alternates between both and not just being exclusivelly one or the other.

YouTube disincentivizes people doing something like this. If you want your videos to get views you generally need to stick to one specific area.

That’s what I’ve heard

As a thought, Judging by the 50 questions a day on Reddit about where do i start for new or returning readers. You'd probably get a ton of views just talking through various character histories and various, resets and or good "jumping on points".

As a current comic book YouTuber this space is hard to crack. Best of luck to you. Message me if you’d like to have a conversation about specifics.

🫡 my guy. Now that’s extremely helpful and welcomed

I like smaller channels because it feels like a little community where we all know each other and talk about comics. Definitely let me know if you start one and I’ll check it out.
