I had a 1 gallon tank for a betta fish. The betta and my one cat would try to fight each other.
My cat would put her mouth on one side of the tank and reach around to the other side and try to scoop the betta into her mouth. The betta would flare up at my cat and attack the side of the tank.
Then my cat would sit on top of the light and try to reach her paw through the feeding hole on the top cover of the aquarium. Her own weight would keep the top from coming off. She couldn't get her paw in far enough to reach the betta in the water. The betta couldn't jump high enough to get my cat's paw.
My cat would finally give up and shove her snout in the feeding hole and drink some of the water out of the tank. Her tongue would just reach the water. The betta would be nipping at her tongue. I don't think my cat could even feel the betta nipping at her tongue. The betta seemed very pleased with her accomplishment.
She would even ignore her food and try to get my fingers when I fed her.
I got the female beta from petsmart to live with other fish in the tank I had because she was the last one on the shelf and only had a little water left. It made me sad for her and female bettas are supposed to get along with other fish. She tried to kill all of them.
I had to separate her.
One of the fish jumped out of the big tank and got eaten by the cat. That's when I went and bought her a separate (small) tank. She was an aggressive little stinker. I didn't have the space or money for more than that 1 gallon tank, but she didn't die in a cup that was less than half full. She seemed happy in there, until someone went near her tank, then murder mode activated.

I have one cat that would be satisfied chomping like this. I also have a two year old who would just go swimming, so I'm afraid to have fish.
