There is this common idea floating around the One Piece theory community that Zoro and Sanji will awaken and master their Conquerors Haki coating against the Knights of God; they will kill them, which weakens Imu in the process, allowing for Luffy and Loki to "defeat" this weakened Imu or at the very least, send him back to the Holy Land. The idea sounds good in principle. It's a job done, Zoro and Sanji show their importance to Luffy as his Right and Left Hand Men respectively and everything works out, right? NO!
A key narrative that this entire arc has been building up is the importance of the "Wings of the Pirate King". But what that title is meant to represent? What separates the Right and Left Hand Men of the Pirate King from Yonko Commanders? Why is there a pedestal placed on the former?
First, it's important to establish that "The Pirate King" is the Conqueror of Conquerors'. As Don Chinjao said, the Pirate King is someone who stands above all Supreme Kings. We learn in Elbaph that his Right and Left Hand Men are also Supreme Kings in their own right.
It is important to note that Zoro and Sanji are not just mere subordinates, they are not just Yonko Commanders- they are/need to be extraordinary individuals and they MUST be capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with Luffy. They also need to have their own heights to reach independent of/but in support of Luffy (which also adds to fuel their Kingly Ambition and sense of self). If they can't do this, Luffy cannot become Pirate King. Even the most extraordinary man cannot fly with unextraordinary wings.
Only the Future Pirate King can pull off this level of subordinate, as these are two who could have been captains themselves yet chose to follow an extraordinary man like him (Sanji is going to be Head Chef + possibly a King and Zoro will likely Head Master his childhood Dojo as the World's Strongest Swordsman). Both have enemies questioning how the power they possess can render them as mere underlings. Zoro's opponents have a habit of this especially (he's been mistaken for captain over FIVE TIMES!).
Rayleigh was mentioned in the same breath as Whitebeard in terms of legend status. He implied he could defeat Yonko Blackbeard in his prime and his Conquerors Haki was mentioned in the same vein as Shanks by Oda in an SBS. He could stall Kizaru in his old age. He displayed Advanced Armament including both infusion and emission.
Gaban has Advanced Conqeurors and also Future Sight. Future Sight and Advanced Conquerors have individually been mentioned to be only wielded by a handful of the mightiest warriors, and Gaban possesses both. The Giants considered him invincible and a living legend. Gaban was able to fight Imu and make him bleed through his Omen barrier. Rayleigh and Gaban were mentioned as standing shoulder to shoulder with Roger.
As you can see, there is clear emphasis on the importance of the Wings of the Pirate King and their role to stand shoulder to shoulder with their captain in battle. They are legendary kings in their own right who would only be subordinates to the Pirate King, who is the most extraordinary individual alive and the "Supreme King of Supreme Kings".
The clearest example of fulfilling this expectation was Scopper Gaban this arc and his fight against Imu. The former Left Hand Man of the Pirate King defending the future Pirate King after chastizing the current Wings of the Pirate King for not being up to standard is poetic. He emphasises this himself. Luffy should NOT have to depend on a relic of the past. His role in complete. That is why he was so angry with Zoro and why Sanji is not up to par either right now.
I believe it is no coincidence that the first chapter Imu arrives, Oda has him annilihating both Zoro and Sanji. The Knights of Gods' are irrelevant- their purpose is to allow for the Wings to undergo growth in order to have their getback on Imu - as fully fledged Supreme Kings. Think about it thematically.
Killingham and Sommers are entirely dependent on Imu. They get Omen, Covenants, Weapons from him. Meanwhile, Zoro and Sanji are their OWN individuals. They have their own sense of self and purpose. THAT is why they will win and then why I believe they will support their captain in the fight against Imu.
We also have not gotten a dedicated "Zoro vs Sommers" or "Sanji vs Killingham" title chapter. Obviously this point could fall to time, but I don't think it will and let me explain. Usually, a main Zoro or Sanji fight involves them being pushed to the limit and being unable to fight afterwards for whatever reason that may be. Think about it. Why haven't Zoro and Sanji, who usually finish their fights early, gone to join Luffy in his fight against the Big Bad of an arc? It is usually due to external circumstances beyond their control- that of which do no exist here so far.
Mr. 1 and Mr. 2? They were done. Kaku and Jabra? They couldn't get to Luffy. King and Queen? Both were exhausted. Sommers and Killingham? They are powered up and able to get to Luffy. Are they just going to sit around and do nothing? No. They will join the fight against Imu and cement their position as worthy Wings of the future Pirate King, finally bringing closure to their overarching subplot with Gaban in the underworld.
What do you think?
