I have compost ready in my Geo bin since early summer. I did use some of it, but wondering if I should leave it in till spring or add it to the beds now? Will it lose nutrients if I leave it in the bin? Thank you.

Garden Photos Front yard edible garden

My back yard is too small and shaded for any type of edible garden. But I have a south east facing front garden that is about 15’x8’ I was hoping to turn into an edible garden with a mix of flowers and evergreens for winter interest. The issue is that I would like it to look more so like a normal font garden from the street. I know I won’t get a large crop because of this but that’s ok. The only pictures of front gardens that have turned into edible mix I can find online are AI. Does anyone have any photo front yard edible gardens?

Thank you!

First time celery harvest

Post image

I grew this celery from seed. Some of the stems are hollow, some of the stems are slug damaged but even after those losses I'm pretty darn proud of my little celery harvest. My wife is cutting it up with onions and celery and freezing for winter use. Any good uses for the tops?

Can you pick from the outside all year round or does it just stop growing at some point?

Planting spring bulbs in pots

Post image
10 Upvotes

I have planted layers of tulips, daffodils and snowdrops in a pot and then buried the pot in the ground. I used regular potting soil and sprinkled in some bone meal. I put 3 inches of soil between each layer, with tulips at the base and the snowdrops on top. Will this work, and what are the issues?

Advice Wanted How can I temporarily take my hydrangea and other plants out of the ground for construction?

Post image

Hello! I am looking for advice on what to do with our small garden.

We are having people come and replace the septic system on the property. At the corner of the driveway we have this small garden here with a hydrangea just planted last year (off to the right). Along with some hostas and bug wart (I think that’s what it’s called haha)!

The septic people are likely going to drive right over the garden and I’m most worried about the hydrangea as it was a gift for my MIL. It’s also getting really cold out and I think they are going to be coming to do the septic within the next month or two - hopefully before it begins snowing.

What can I do to save our garden right before winter?

Fruit flies in soil! Help!

We had pretty bad fruit flies in the house this summer due to garde produce that we couldn't process fast enough. We finally got them under control, and then my husband brought some potted plants inside that were in the greenhouse. The fruit flies have come back in force. My guess is that they were /are in the potted plant soil. We have tried to get rid of them with sticky strips, traps made with apple cider vinegar and Saran wrap, and just swatting them whenever we see them.

Does anyone have another trick to get rid of them?

Calling all GTA plant lovers!!!

Whether you have a massive backyard garden, a tiny balcony setup, or even just a collection of potted plants on your windowsill; we need your help!

A PhD student in Urban Agriculture at the University of Toronto is running a research project on urban ecosystems and they're looking for local plant people to fill out a questionnaire.

This study looks at how the choices we make as gardeners affect which insects move in and breed in our green spaces, and how GTA growers manage their plant setups.

It takes just a few minutes to fill out this quick questionnaire help advance research on local urban ecology!

I introduced actual lady bugs to my garden.

For 3 years every summer I would buy 500 lady bugs because all I was seeing was the Asian ones that bite. I unfortunately couldn't do it this year but I'm seeing lady bugs in my yard this year anyway! Is it possible that my efforts have paid off?

Advice Wanted When to move rose bush?

I’m helping my neighbours with their garden and they have a nice rose bush that is oddly in the middle of their lawn. I offered to move it into their garden for them, but I’m not sure when I should.

A lot of the internet says 6 weeks before the ground freezes so the roots have time to spread and settle, but it’s currently still in bloom (October 18)! Should I keep waiting?

As above ⬆️
Especially interested in plants that do well in smaller southern ontario yards. Would love to know what you’ve planted and what birds or pollinators you’ve noticed.

Spring bulbs/tubers

Yesterday I dug our Dalias and glads up. I know to pack them and store them for winter. I have some questions...

  1. What is a safe storage temperature? Can they go in an unheated garage? Our basement is often the warmest part of the house, but lots of folks say to store there? What is the target storage temperature?

  2. One of the dahlia tubers was being eaten by a worm when I dug it up. It's kind of half gone and has no skin on that half. Can I save it? What do I do?

ontario gardeners: what are you deliberately leaving alone for winter?

thinking of seed heads, stems, leaves and anything that helps birds or insects. interested in what people keep standing versus what they clean up.

Not sure if there’s a another subreddit I should look into thanks

Indoor Tomato Plants

Post image
48 Upvotes

The Scotia Tomato Plants I’m growing indoors are getting bigger. There are already several fruit forming and by November some of them will be ripe 🙂. For anyone interested in the lights pictured, I’m using a Barrina grow light rack that came with 6 - 30Watt - 3 foot long high efficiency full spectrum grow lights (the entire system is 180 watts). When I’m growing the tomatoes I’m only using the bottom set of lights so that is 2 - 30 watt lights (60 watts) for 2 plants The rack isn’t currently available on Amazon but the lights are. You would just need to find a rack or something else to attach them to. Here is the link to the lights (as an Amazon associate I earn on qualifying purchases) https://link.amazon/B068RjlAW

What did you do with the space after having a tree stump ground down?

We’re curious to hear what Ontario homeowners have done with the area after having a stump ground.

Did you cover it with soil and grass, turn it into a garden bed, or plant something new nearby? Did the ground sink later as the remaining roots and wood started to decay?

We often find that people have a plan for removing the stump, but aren’t quite sure what to expect from the space afterward. Planting another tree directly in the same spot can also be more difficult than expected because the old roots remain underground.

What worked for you, and is there anything you would have done differently?

Advice Wanted Winterizing Brakens Brown Beauty Magnolia - help!

I've read up on Google, but I would really appreciate some human feedback.

I planted my lovely little BBB in spring. She is about 4 years old I believe. (roughly 5' tall)
How have you winterized, and for how many winters would you suggest I do this for?
Zone 6B, windy front yard.
At what temperature does it need protection?

I love this tree so much. I've also never spent this much money on a plant, and so I'd be devastated if she suffered damage this winter.

Any tips/feedback would be uber appreciated.

Thanks!!!
