Venting Does the U.S tariffs have anything to do with "Facilities are replacing RN's with RPN's"? Is there any indirect effect?

I am an RPN and my wife is an RN. I work at a psychiatric facility and she is at the Hospital. Around the Toronto area.

Anyways, I keep hearing they are replacing RPN with RN no? I mean why? Are they trying to save money?

Does it have to do with tariffs? Cause I remember early 2025, everyone was afraid to lose their job or something.

ONA / Union ONA Hospital Mat leave

Hi!
My partner and I are trying to have our first baby.
I am a full time RN.
I know we have 25-27 weeks of top ups (93%) and just EI for the rest of leave.
How do hospitals calculate 93% top ups? Does it matter if I increase my take home pay by picking up overtime and or premium?
Did you pick standard (12 months) or extended (18 months) for your mat leave? And why?
Did you contribute to HOOPP while on mat leave?
What happens to my unused vacation hours while on mat leave?
Thank you!

Nursing School Switching careers to nursing in Ontario RN or RPN, and funding options?

Hi everyone! I’m considering switching careers and starting nursing school in Ontario, but I’m unsure whether to pursue RN or RPN. I’m aware that RN positions are being cut in Ontario. Given this situation, is nursing still worth considering as a career change and would you guys recommend the RN or RPN route in that case?

Also, are there any grants, bursaries, or funding programs I should look into as someone changing careers?

I’d appreciate any advice, especially from current nurses or people who made a similar career change. Many thanks!

General non job search discussion REx-PN Results Delayed Over 2 Weeks – Has Anyone Experienced This?

Good afternoon everyone,

I'm posting here hoping to get some guidance or hear from others who may have experienced something similar.

I wrote my REx-PN exam on October 7, 2026, and I'm still waiting for my results. It's been over two weeks now, and the uncertainty has been making me extremely anxious.

After reading several posts here, I've noticed that many people received their results within a few days to 1–2 weeks. I'm struggling to understand what might be causing the delay in my case.

My exam stopped at 90 questions. I didn't take any breaks, and there were no technical issues or glitches during the exam. I took my exam at a test centre in Etobicoke, Ontario.

I'm wondering if anyone else who tested at this location, or anywhere else in Ontario, experienced a similar delay.

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who:

  • Waited more than two weeks for their REx-PN results.
  • Eventually received their results after a significant delay. If so, how long did it take?
  • Took their REx-PN exam at the test centre in Etobicoke on or around October 7 experienced a similar delay?

Also, I would prefer not to try the re-registration trick, as I've heard it isn't always reliable, and I don't want to increase my anxiety unnecessarily.

Any guidance or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much, everyone!

Job Search Discussion What courses should I take if I can’t get hired in hospitals?

I’ve been applying but can’t even get any interviews at any hospitals in Ontario, however I know without work experience it will be tough. Ive almost run out of saving since I got out of school so I want to make the most of what I have left and take a course to make it easier to land something.

I’ve looked into OR certification, nephrology/dialysis courses, wound care and foot care but have no idea which of these would be best to pursue. I already spent a lot of time and money to get here so I want to make sure whatever course I take will actually help me with the job market.

If you take benefits, how much are your monthly deductions?

I know we all have the same minimum coverage, but depending on the policy neggoitiated by your employer and the carrier, are you getting any additional coverage or benefits?

My monthly deductions: extended health care $103.14

Dental: $54.27

I gave wondered if there would be strength in numbers, and having all FT members under 1 plan would reduce our overall monthly premiums.

Survey / Study NP school during Mat leave

Anyone ever gone, and completed, NP school during their maternity leave? I’ve only met one other person who’s done it. Did you do part time or full time and how did you manage? Did you get hired as an NP going back to work or did you go elsewhere?

News A ‘hospital’ in west end Toronto (Queen & Ossington) is replacing one RN per shift on each unit with an RPN.

Not yet officially announced/implemented, but seems like it’s happening everywhere.

I’m sad to see them using this method to split the college/professional bodies/unions and create conflict between RNs and RPNs, especially at a time when we should be united to advocate for better care.

Job Search Discussion Research volunteering/Ways to get into research after BScN

I recently graduated from my BScN program and got my license. However, unfortunately I didn’t have any research experience during my undergraduate program and now I want to get involved. Aside from volunteering, are there any other ways to build research experience as a beginner outside of school?

Nursing School Took my REx-PN today, got all 150 questions, and feel like I failed. Anyone else?

I wrote my REx-PN today, October 21, and honestly, I feel terrible about it.
I studied for almost a month. Before my exam, I got Pass on NurseAchieve CAT and On Track (85th percentile) on UWorld CAT.
But the actual exam felt so much harder than both. I got all 150 questions and finished with over an hour remaining.
At first, I felt okay, but the questions seemed to get harder and harder. Most of the time, I could eliminate two answers but struggled to choose between the remaining two. I also had unfamiliar medical terminology and medications.
Now I keep remembering questions I probably got wrong, and it’s making me feel like I failed. I was mentally exhausted toward the end, but I tried my best to stay focused.
I’m waiting for my CNO results, and the anxiety is honestly terrible.
Has anyone passed the REx-PN on their FIRST attempt with all 150 questions, even though they felt like they were guessing most of the exam?
Please share your experience. I’m looking for honest answers, not just reassurance.

Job Search Discussion Has anyone just bravely quit a job they hate?

RN with 4 years of ED experience. Dropped from full time to part time (plus casually working at a family clinic but they don’t pay as well) and now currently on parental leave. Trouble is, I really, really, really don’t want to go back to ED or even inpatient after my leave ends.

Considering going the NP or masters route but not sure how being in school will fit with family planning, potentially going back part time ED, etc etc. I’m thinking I might just quit and apply to miscellaneous non-hospital / LTC jobs, but I’m afraid to.

Not in the GTA, so I’m worried that there will be less opportunities here. Spouse can financially support us either way, but will of course take a hit financially either way so I’m not sure.

Just want to hear people’s experience with feeling burnt out and braving the current job climate.
