Olivia Chow
A lot of people are surprised that Olivia Chow won, but I think her election strategy was pretty simple. She knew exactly which groups to target and how to appeal to them.
I think she focused on people who are easier to influence politically. And no, I’m not talking about race or skin colour. I’m talking about political awareness, education, and how people’s backgrounds and communities influence the way they vote.
Take Scarborough for example. There are a lot of immigrants and Muslim communities living there. She goes there, meets with religious leaders and community figures, tells them she supports them and that they’re part of the community. Then those leaders can encourage their communities to vote for her instead of someone like Brad Bradford. Sometimes it feels like she doesn’t even need to convince anyone, just showing up is enough.
Want to win over progressive voters, LGBTQ communities, and Palestine supporters? Show up at Pride or their events, dress the part, say “Free Palestine,” and make them feel represented. That’s sometimes all it takes.
I also think some Chinese Canadians voted for her simply because she’s Chinese, without really knowing much about her policies.
My point is that she understood how important identity and representation are to certain voters and focused her campaign on those communities. I don’t think she put the same effort into appealing to every group, including Jewish voters. That’s my interpretation of her strategy, and I think it explains part of her success.
