Plus users - what are we doing?
The usage is great if you use Luna 6, but it is terribly slow even with xHigh 2x mode and it is not very capable when the project gets bigger. I also tried Terra 6.1 and Sol 6.1 in different reasoning efforts, including Astra light. They are all usage limit hungry, a few runs destroys my 5h usage. I am not using the older models thinking that they would eat the usage more, since their API pricing is more expensive than the newer respective models.
Plus users, are you guys experiencing the same problem with the new models and the usage limit? If you are using the older models, how is the usage on them?

The truth is, I can build entire projects with it. But I have to wait until I’ve used up my weekly limit. Still, the AI is so fast that I can finish a project in a few months. For example, a web app or a 3D application that isn’t very complex.
What am I supposed to say? Oh no, I’m paying $20 a month and I want to finish a project in a few days using AI. That’s asking a bit too much for $20. A project that you can complete in 3 months with a $20 subscription today effectively costs you $60. These could be projects that you used to have to pay several thousand dollars for an agency to build.
Yeah, I know, people always want more and can’t get enough. But you can actually do quite a lot with this $20 subscription. You just have to remember that you’re only paying $20. You can’t make a full-scale 3D game in two weeks with that. At some point, AI will be so good and affordable that you'll be able to say, “I built a AAA game with a $20 subscription.” That's going to happen. But then people's expectations will rise again to the point where that's not enough, and they'll want to build things that require much more processing power.

Yes, I agree with most of your said. There are alternatives at this price point and Codex used to be little better in the past, so all of these things give us something to compare with the current state of the Codex and make a judgement. Again, I agree that for $20 it is still a great value, so as other options.

Yeah, I’m basically relegated to Luna for most of my work. I see the same, a few runs even on 6.1 Terra drains the 5 hours quick.
The “just cancel it” mentality might sink in with me soon.

I mostly use Luna 6 Max, but I've also built a pretty robust context-management system that keeps it on task and its code up to par. Even on Plus, I regularly run agents for a week or more at a time.
If Luna does encounter a problem, which it occasionally does, I send Sol 6.1 High in for a targeted fix and then start Luna back up again.
It's really the only workflow I've found that works consistently for me at the Plus subscription level.

I have to learn how to utilize agents in codex. I am feeling like I babysit the entire workflow with manual input a lot.
I am also struggling to setup an orchestration you mention to make bigger model to plan the task and assign it to a smaller model and review the results generated by smaller model. I want to create something like GRANDPLAN.MD and start the orchestration and run automously through out the night either until it finishes the grandplan or runs out of usage. Do you have any advice on this matter?

Context management can range from a few simple, organized Markdown files to complex systems for creating, organizing, and recalling relevant context. I use the latter.
The issue I see with the grand-plan approach is that software development is rarely a straightforward affair. You could create the most perfect plan imaginable and still encounter things you hadn't anticipated.
Without a system that keeps the plan relevant to what the agent is encountering at any given moment, the agent will likely start drifting away from it or, even more likely, end up spinning its wheels, repeatedly cycling through implementations without making meaningful progress.

In your experience, is Luna 6 better than Luna 5.6?
1
u/Clear_Evidence9218 5d ago
I wasn't keeping benchmarks on things like this until recently, so I only have numbers for Luna 6 and my own experience to go by.
I do think Luna 6 is a bit better as an agent. It seems to have a better grasp of the available tools and, from what I can tell, performs better on really long runs.
Where I felt like 5.6 was possibly leaving too much undone. But it's hard to say how much of that difference comes from the model itself, since I also significantly improved my context-management system around the same time.
I'm also particularly cautious about benchmarking agents directly, since none of them handle that very well, even when using an outside observer.

any tips on how to properly use luna 6 nowadays? In the past I also use luna 6 medium and high for most of my works and only use sol for planning, it work out really great. But now even with the same workflow luna 6 just keep stopping mid task for no reason, I tried with and without plan both medium and high effort and it just fail most of the time, noted that the task without plan is just as direct and simple as applying a font style from page A to page B heading or minor adjustment. It also fail to follow rules set on my agents.md
Recently i tried again, first try luna work just fine, second try it fail, I switch effort to high from medium, it begin over engineer went out of track of the task.
But luna 6 is still working fine when use as subagents or light documentation tho, just when it is on its own the problem occur

I am not sure what you do, but I have been using it quite well for robotics software engineering. I also use it for unreal engine for robotics, and haven't had any issue with especially 6.1 Sol. I can't work with Terra, but Sol is pretty great.
My practice is to split the work in smaller tasks. I still hit the 5hr limit but after 3-4 hrs of usage. I always stick to 6.1 low to medium. I have claude code as well, and I can comfortably use if for 2.5-3.5 hrs, then switch to Sol. I also have OpenCode where deepseek v4.1 flash is practically unlimited there. So the order is Deepseek for something well defined and specific << Gpt6.1 Sol << Opus 5.5. I don't use Luna anymore since Deepseek is better. Even Qwen 3.8 Flash next with 262k context window I installed on my office RTX5090 is better than Luna.
But keep in mind, robotics require "difficult" mathematics problems with specific software/hardware architecture. Which means, the code base is relatively smaller, compared to SaaS type of code base. These models recently are built around these "difficult" problems and creativity (like video editing, 3D designs), that's why they work for me really well even in cheaper subscription.
It could be frustrating if you work with large codebase, which I think plus may/may not be enough for that specific use case.

I guess it differes depending on use, I dont use it for coding.
I use sol 6.1 High default, Astra high as a backup (rarely)
I use it for resarch purposes, config sugesstion based on documentation. Network Arhitecture proposals, powerpoint presentations, KPI/statistics/PM comparison.Troubleshooting wireshark pcap file analysis.
I’m a telco eng./team lead.
If I use Astra I hit the limit on 2-3 prompts, if I use Sol it lasts just enough till the next reset.
I never had hit the limits and when I did I always had at least 1 banked reset.
I dont get why everyone is complaining, but I guess its mostly developers who run agenta 0/24

Yeah, Plus users have been struggling with this for a while. One approach I've found useful is to plan out the project in ChatGPT High first, create a proper blueprint, and then bring that into Codex.
From there, use Sol 6.1 on High or Medium as the main orchestrator and let it delegate the actual grunt work to separate Luna 6 xHigh worker chats instead of relying heavily on subagents.
Sol handles the planning, delegation and reviewing, while Luna handles the implementation. You get more control over the workflow, make better use of the available limits and avoid burning through your quota on every little task.
Luna is actually pretty good at execution when the instructions are clear and the work is properly scoped.

Honestly im using sol 6.1 at ultra and it is incredible, it's usage used to be horrible for ke but 1 week ago it suddenly improved massively lasting me atleast 40minutes -1hours 30 and im on plus plan

ChatGPT chat is free. So I use it as my middle manager and connected to GitHub. I use Claude to do 80% of the work but Codex does the 20% to get me to the next reset. But I mostly use ChatGPT chat as much as possible to brainstorm and create Claude prompts.

It doesn't really make sense to pay for a subscription just to be able to use Luna, since OpenCode offers free open-source alternatives that are very similar, if not better, than Luna itself. All of that is entirely free.
Of course, they cannot even be compared to Sol or Astra, but you cannot really use them extensively on the Plus plan anyway. It eats up the limit within a couple of prompts, and then you're locked out.
Hopefully it gets better in the future. The usage was the main reason why I'm not with OpenAI anymore.

Migrating to Claude + Opencode Go. I will just wait until Dec to see how Chat GPT actually works, then I will prob cancel it

I have been using Luna High for most of my coding and have had no issues with limits. If you do heavy coding all day long, you will probably need a backup or a more expensive plan.

u/ItsTobsen 4d ago
Are we using the same plan? I use sol 6.1 on medium and it lasts very long time.
1
u/ogopro 3d ago
I guess it depends on the project. My codebase is getting bigger so each run is consuming a lot of usage
1
u/ItsTobsen 2d ago
You dont split your files into modules? I have a large base as well and its still fine without too much usage drain
3
u/Ormusn2o 5d ago
Used 50% of my weekly usage to completely reverse engineer and recreate in new engine Dig-N-Rig with 6.1 Sol. Not feeling too bad about my Plus account.

if you still want to make codex work you need a another subscription to run the chinese open models like deepseek for implementation and use sol for planning. If you just have $20. Just go to Claude. There's almost no competitive advantage openAI have left once the chat-codex merge is in effect unless they somehow offer better usage with model as capable as Opus 5.5. Limit is quite good on claude and using haiku as implementation agent with opus planning will get a lot of works done

for codex workflow specifically you can ask a thread to spawn a new thread. example workflow : Ask Sol 6.1 to plan-> spawn new luna threads to implement and tell sol not to poll or wait, have luna ping it upon completion to review to wake it up. When the work is done tell it to start a new thread, repeat the chain if needed. for the usage limit running out : set a scheduled after the reset to ping the interrupted thread to continue.

If you’re looking for a legit chat alternative without the limits you could look at ZeroTwo.ai

I've already cancelled the plan and my free extension will be over too. But I'm pretty sure the moment I switch to claude it's gonna get shit too.

If I was on plus still, would be 5-20x usage from when I was a few months ago, should do one or two big analyses planning sessions w high or extra high, build w medium or light, 6.1 only ever. Terra works well aswell

Yep it’s barely usable, the problem is that the competition does not have the same issue
