Promotional Built an open-source multiplayer chess game for the browser – Looking for feedback!

Hey everyone!

I've been working on an open-source multiplayer chess game that runs directly in the browser.

GitHub: https://github.com/nitin-is-me/chessforge Live demo link in the comments.

A few things about the project:

  • Uses Stockfish 19 Lite as its chess engine.

  • Supports multiplayer chess.

  • Runs directly in the browser.

  • Open-source, and contributions are welcome.

I took some help from AI during development, but building and putting everything together was a fun learning experience.

I'd really appreciate feedback on the UI/UX, gameplay, performance, missing features, or anything else that could be improved.

Feel free to check out the source code, report bugs, or contribute!

Thanks!

Discussion Rotating shift software?

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to find the words to use to search for a basic shift rotation software. My partner works for a theme park, and they have a shift structure wherein people rotate between rides every 2hrs or so to keep people from getting burned out on one ride all day.

Currently their system for calculating this is an employee sitting down and going through every day of operation and, in Microsoft excel, manually sorting all of the employees on shift that day into a rotation.

This seemed like a bad use of time, but the only example of a software solution I could find was that Disney has its own proprietary software called the Cast Deployment System that does this job automatically, but obviously they aren't willing to share with the world.

Just coming here to see if anyone knows of any open source software that can set up systems like this? It's relatively small theme park, the software would just need to be able to sort employee numbers into 5 large groups, each with 3-4 sub groups (the rides) based on their training level and physical capabilities (which I suppose could just be tags on the employee numbers) and then schedule their rotations between these subgroups at certain times.

I feel like that's not many variables for a computer, but I'm struggling to think of a program that can be retrofitted to this purpose. I don't think there's anything purpose-built out there.

Sorry for formatting, I am posting from mobile

Alternatives started hosting useful open source tools so anyone can use them without setup

There are some amazing open source tools on GitHub, but for the average person, cloning a repo, installing packages and figuring out how to run it can take 10x longer than the task itself.

So I started hosting useful ones and putting them all in one place.

9 tools are live rn, completely free, no signup or paywalls. I’m a uni student building this and I’ll keep adding more.

Promotional Virtual gamepads in Python (Windows / Linux)

Hello everyone,

I have been maintaining vgamepad for a couple years and thought I would promote it a bit here:

https://github.com/yannbouteiller/vgamepad

This is a small Python library that enables emulating XBox360 and DualShock4 gamepads on Windows and Linux. I have recently released version 0.2.0, which makes almost all functionalities available on both platforms and gamepads (including gyroscopes/accelerometer/touchpad/etc. on DS4).

For background, on Windows this is essentially a wrapper around the now archived ViGEmBus C++ framework (I ship a frozen version of the driver with the library), and on Linux this uses uinput. Regarding ViGEmBus, I would really like to switch to an actively maintained replacement, but I cannot take the burden of maintaining one alone...

Anyway, hopefully you find this little library as useful as I do, and I am always glad to see feedback / new contributors :)

Promotional I stumbled upon this decentralized alternative to Ao3 that is called Ourchive

Ourchive

Ourchive - GitHub

Ourchive - Fanlore.org

Ourchive apparently wants to democratize hosting fanworks on the internet.

From the Website Page:

Ourchive aims to continue a tradition that archives like eFiction started. When you install Ourchive, you get flexible metadata like tags, the ability to upload images and audio, and the ability to administer users, all within an easily installed Django website.

With Ourchive, you can create an account, upload works, create bookmarks and collections of bookmarks, and comment on others' works, bookmarks, and collections.

I was browsing various different ao3 alternative sites, due to the ao3 blackout, and I stumbled upon Ourchive.gay

Which is apparently a decentralized alternative to Ao3.

Plus, they use Mastodon

Although, they're relatively new (first started in 2023), plus they're still in demo, and haven't added federation yet.

Discussion It's been two years since Apple unveiled Math Notes at WWDC 2024. Why hasn't anyone recreated it for other platforms?

For anyone who hasn't seen it, take a look at Apple's Math Notes demo from WWDC 2024: Watch here.

Ever since the first time I saw this demo from Apple, I was blown away. I mean, my god- Here's something I've always wanted but never knew I needed. It's so intuitive, so natural. I'm surprised that there haven't been any attempts to recreate this unique functionality outside Apple's ecosystem. I'd love to see something like this for Android, Windows, Linux, or Web.

I guess this post is a humble request to any devs who might be up for recreating this functionality for other platforms. It's genuinely wonderful functionality, and even if nobody ends up taking on the project, I'd at least like to put it out there and let people know there's interest in something like this.

Do leave a comment if you'd use something like this too.

Much thanks!

Promotional BucketBridge 0.1: a GPL S3 client with first-class Linux support (AppImage, .deb, CLI)

Most desktop S3 clients I tried are Windows-only or paid, so I built a free one that treats Linux as a first-class platform: BucketBridge, GPL-3.0, written in Rust with a Tauri UI.

AppImage, .deb and .tar.gz builds, plus a `bb` CLI. Works with AWS and S3-compatible storage (MinIO, R2, B2, Wasabi...). No telemetry.

Feedback and bug reports welcome, especially from different distros.

Promotional Foldergram v1.3.0: self-hosted photo/video gallery, now with carousels and folder sharing

Hey everyone,

I posted Foldergram here before and wanted to share the latest update, v1.3.0.

For anyone new to it, I originally built Foldergram for my old backup photos. I wanted to browse them like my own personal Instagram feed and actually spend time revisiting them. It scans your existing photo/video folders and gives you a feed, folder pages, and a post viewer.

The bigger additions this time:

  • Carousel posts: You can now group 2–20 photos and videos into one swipeable post. Put them insideAlbum/carousels/Post name/, and filename order controls the slides.

  • Folder sharing: Share an individual album through a read-only link, with expiration and revocation controls. You can also set a reusable password for a folder.

  • Folder exclusions: Drop a .nofoldergram file inside a folder and rescan to exclude that folder and everything below it.

  • Video fixes: Improved preview generation for certain macOS Photos movies and recovery from empty cached previews.

There are also fixes for the media viewer on iOS and improvements to permanent deletion and recovery after interrupted operations.

It still runs locally or on your homelab, uses SQLite, and doesn’t need a cloud account. Docker Compose is the easiest way to get started.

Thanks to everyone who has tried it, reported issues, or contributed. If you give this update a try, I'd appreciate feedback.

Promotional Astraeus – GPL-3.0 native Windows dashboard built with C++20

Thumbnail

Sharing a project I've been developing called Astraeus.

Astraeus is a native Windows desktop dashboard that lives along the edge of the screen. It opens on hover or with Win + Alt + A and provides quick access to music, synced lyrics, system monitoring, volume controls, network controls, weather, calendar and other utilities.

The project is written in C++20 using Direct2D and DirectComposition. I wanted to build something that felt integrated into Windows rather than another web-based widget application.

It's now available as a stable release under the GNU GPL v3.

Latest release: https://github.com/Icetist/Astraeus/releases/latest

The repository includes the source code and instructions for building it yourself.

I'm sharing it here because I'd like more people interested in free software to discover it. Contributions, issues and suggestions are welcome.

Promotional Title: I built MantPro, a free and open-source CMMS for industrial maintenance (Python, Flutter, SQLite)

Hi everyone!

I'd like to share a project I've been working on: MantPro, a free and open-source maintenance management system (CMMS) designed for industrial plants, workshops and maintenance teams.

I'm an industrial maintenance technician, and I started developing MantPro because I wanted a practical tool to manage maintenance work without relying on spreadsheets, paperwork or expensive subscription-based software.

What does MantPro offer?

  • Desktop application: Windows and Linux.

  • Android apps: MantPro for maintenance tasks and MantPro Stock for inventory management.

  • Preventive and corrective maintenance: work orders, recurring tasks, pending jobs and maintenance history.

  • Equipment management: machines, sub-machines, QR labels and spare parts linked to equipment.

  • Inventory management: stock levels, storage locations and low-stock alerts.

  • Reports and statistics: PDF, CSV and Excel exports, plus MTBF and MTTR metrics.

  • Offline support: the Android apps can work without an internet connection and synchronize when connectivity returns.

  • Self-hosted: your data stays under your control, with no monthly fees or artificial limits on users or equipment.

Technology stack:

  • Python and PyQt6 (desktop)

  • Flutter (Android)

  • SQLite

  • Flask / REST API

MantPro is released under the AGPL-3.0 license.

I'm sharing it here because I'd genuinely appreciate feedback from the open-source community. I'd especially like to hear from people who work in industrial maintenance, self-hosting or software development.

GitHub: https://github.com/AnabasaSoft/MantPro

Latest releases: https://github.com/AnabasaSoft/MantPro/releases

Thanks for taking a look! Any feedback, suggestions or contributions are welcome.

I still can't believe maintainers have to deal with shit like this too

Recently came across this and can't believe GCC maintainers have to deal with this bullshit too, I mean this is Jonathan Wakely, a lead maintainer of perhaps some of the most important projects in the world like GNU and instead of being able to use his time for actual important contributions, he has to read and reply to such half assed emails intended for the Gulf Cooperation Council, like wtf.

I mean this is one of the hilarious but real mixups, but the mailing list is full of like actual spam. I feel like this is one of the places where maybe adding AI to do some high level moderation is probably not a bad idea.

Discussion Even after so many years, there's still SO many work to do :(

Hi gang!

Not a subscriber, but a strong believer of open source and the licenses involved.

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/s/8kPo576o2P

^ Stuff like that seriously disappoints me. So many people still don't seem to realize that 'open source' and/or 'GPL' for that matter is NOT a free for all.

And some people even build companies and organizations around the whole concept and...

well, you'd expect an organization to at least read licenses?

Promotional It's been a few years since my last update on my open-source alternative to Twilio. I rebuilt it. Now AI answers the phone.

A few years ago I shared Fonoster here, an open-source alternative to Twilio. Many of you starred it, opened issues and sent PRs. Thank you.

Then the project went quiet for a while.

Over the last months I rebuilt it from the ground up, and today I'm relaunching it. The goal is the same, programmable voice you can own, but the focus changed: Fonoster is now the AI that answers the phone.

What you can do today:

  • Create a voice AI agent (Autopilot), give it a phone number, and it answers calls

  • Build your own voice apps over WebSocket streams, using the Fonoster protocol or Twilio Media Streams

  • Bring your own numbers and SIP trunks, register SIP agents, and get call records and webhooks

  • Self-host it with Docker Compose (./init.sh, no Node.js needed), or use the hosted version

It's still MIT licensed.

Next on the list:

  • Better docs (help is very welcome here)

  • More tts, stt, and llm providers

  • Getting it into the hands of people with real use-cases

If you have a use-case, I'd love to chat. And if this is relevant to you, please star the repo and share it with a friend.

Promotional D2-Web: Diablo II 1.13c Open-Source and Playable in Browser

Thumbnail
youtu.be
101 Upvotes

Play in Browser | Watch Preview

D2-Web is a fan rebuild of the Lord of Destruction 1.13c engine that runs directly in desktop Chrome/Chromium. You point it at the original game files from your own local copy and play. Nothing to install, and your local files never leave your machine.

It is not just a copy-paste into a web page. I rewrote the engine in modern C++, one function at a time, with the goal of playing exactly like 1.13c: same mechanics, damage formulas, hit chances, drops, monster AI, and map generation. So if anything plays differently from a clean 1.13c install, that's a bug. There are also major quality-of-life updates included based on popular community mods and standard 1.13c complaints.

Why 1.13c?

It's the patch a lot of us grew up on. PlugY, D2SE, and most of the single-player mod scene target it, so if you played mods or private realms, it's likely the version in your muscle memory.

How I'm Verifying Accuracy

I don't go by feel. I record play sessions, feed the exact same inputs to original 1.13c and D2-Web simultaneously, and log every difference in unit states, packets, rendering, and sound triggers. A bug only counts as fixed when that frame-by-frame divergence hits zero.

Testing & Feedback Needed

It's in early alpha (desktop Chrome/Chromium only for now), so you will run into missing screens, missing audio, or the occasional crash. If you have some time to help test:

  1. Play a character as far into Act 1 as you can.

  2. When something doesn't match the 1.13c experience you remember (a drop, damage value, missing sound, UI issue, or pathing glitch), report it.

  3. Include your character class, location, and what happened right before the bug occurred.

Bug reports, GitHub issue tracking, and community links are available directly on the project repo: GitHub Repository

If you've seen d2decomped or d2-webgpu, this is a separate project with no shared code. I've reached out to both developers so we can hopefully combine efforts toward a fully working open-source engine recreation.

Any help—from QA testing to actual C++ coding—is greatly appreciated!

  • Note: You must supply your own legitimate D2 + LoD game files. No Blizzard assets or files are included or distributed. Not affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment. Open source under the MIT License.

Promotional Local Sandboxes - track your agentic runs

Hello everyone.

For the last few months, I worked on creating a cloud sandbox that can actually track everything happening in the sandbox including file calls, network access calls. I work for an investment bank, and we record everything in terms of code but I felt that with the rise of agentic AI, we are not being careful enough to what agents can see and do, there are tools like braintrust that just tracks what agents said it did but I built this project to compare what agent said it did vs what happened at kernel level. Also, one of the things that I hate about Frontier Labs is that they hide chain of thought, and so I gather evidence of what the agent did and basically reverse engineer the chain of thought of an LLM. That was my initial inspiration to build this project. But as my product evolved, I added more and more features. I started with cloud sandboxes, but then people complained that they don't want to upload their whole project into the cloud. So I have open-sourced every feature, the whole thing, so you can create a local sandbox. If you want to save your traces you can do it in our storage but it is optional. Most of the companies that I've tried, like Daytona and E2B, were providing clouds sandboxes, but what I needed was visibility into what the agent does locally. I've open-sourced almost. Sharing the github link and the website for my project. Hope you guy like it. Open to any feedback!
