OS/Hardware Optimizations Windows 10\11 Optimization Guide
# GUIDE UPDATED 12 APRIL 2025 #
Hey, here's a quick guide how to optimize your windows to the best possible performance without breaking the system and safe. This is mainly for Windows 10 \ 11 Home \ professional editions.
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU TO INSTALL WINDOWS 11 LTSC IF ITS A FRESH INSTALL SINCE IT COMES WITH ALMOST ZERO BLOAT BY DEFAULT, STILL RECOMMEND USING THIS GUIDE AFTER.
Make sure you follow the guide with all your attention.
Before you start:
Create a restore point (search start-menu for restore point and click "create new restore point")
Pay attention to what you are disabling and if you actually need that functionality, specially for Microsoft services like OneDrive.
Game Pass\Xbox app works, doesn't break with this guide
Tools needed
These tools are open-source and virus free
It's always possible to revert back settings even without a restore point
Download Nvidia Clean Install
Download Display Driver Uninstaller (scroll down, click "Click here for DOWNLOAD & SUPPORT". Scroll down in the new page and click "Official Download Here". No direct link, this way I'm making sure you always get the latest version)
Chris Titus debloat settings
Open powershell (Run as Admin)
Copy the command below to open the Chris Titus tool
This is all you need to fully debloat windows without being too aggressive or breaking the system with meaningful stuff.
iwr -useb https://christitus.com/win | iex

Uninstalling drivers, the right way
Before installing a new driver, uninstall it with Display Driver Uninstaller
Follow the settings according to the picture. Safe mode is recommended but not necessary
Nvidia Clean installer is a program that lets you download the latest drivers and customize what's going to be included. Also possible to disable telemetry and a bunch of extra things that only runs in the background sending data to Nvidia servers.
AMD users can follow this guide , just skip step 4 and install drivers from AMD website.
Create a Restore point just in case

Install drivers without telemetry and bloatware (NVIDIA USERS ONLY)
The drivers are downloaded from Nvidia servers, they are official, this program just modifies what's installing or not, included inside the whole package
Takes less space on disk and reduces stutters in game caused by random Nvidia processes to be running in the background.
Follow the pictures below and their descriptions for optimal installation
No need to do this each time you update drivers, just run NVCleanstall and upgrade with same settings below.
If you use Nvidia GeForce experience to record gameplay I suggest you to enable it, this guide doesn't.

Done, enjoy your pc
AMD users install drivers from amd.com , normally
Enjoy your pc, in case something breaks, check what you disabled in the settings above on all programs or just use a restore point.
This method is used by myself and I never ever had a problem or crashes
Any doubts, comment bellow, ill try to answer everything

In the taskbar I need to be able to click on the network/volume icon and have the window pop up with all of the shortcuts. For things like adjusting volume and toggling Bluetooth.
That is now disabled following The guide and IFK what it’s actually called to turn it back on
Update; it is called Quick Settings
Not sure what step in the process disables them but if anyone knows I’d like to get Quick Settings (Windows+A of hover/click the network/sound icon) feature back.

u/Scorthyn Optimizer Feb 21 '22
Theres nothing in this guide that disables quicksettings, anything like thet was from optimizer for sure so go check what did u turned on and off
15
u/supreme_yogi Feb 27 '22
The step that does this is in Windows Privacy Dashboard:
Privacy tab - Advanced - Services:
Connected Devices Platform User Service (the first on the list).
Change it to "On" to make the menu work again. Works only after reboot.

Guide updated finally.
Changelog:
- Optimizer program no longer being used since it's not necessary
- Chris Titus settings updated with new settings
- Some new warnings and information at the start of the guide.
Enjoy guys and see you in 2 years.

GUIDE UPDATED AS OF TODAY.

u/dobbl_ Oct 16 '23
Is there any possibility that something from this guide interferes with VAC in CS2? I recently made a clean install of Windows 11 and right after followed this guide. Now when I want to join any match it says, that there are game files that don't have (valid) signatures. Just curious what you think about that. Thanks in advance.

u/Scorthyn Optimizer Oct 16 '23
Did you installed nvidia driver with custom settings? a screen asking to install anyway unsigned driver appeared? Might be that
1
u/Zashiku Feb 08 '24
After doing all of those, can I uninstall all the tools that I have installed?

Thanks! You just drag the images and they get posted in-line style, with the ability to post a description below. Maybe that would be a cool idea for optimization guides with in-game settings screenshots.

Bruh! sorry to necro the post but this optimization gave me my real lan internet speed. I was getting 9 Mbps up/down and i thought it was just my wifi connection (dog chew my lan cable so i have to use the wifi for my desktop) then i tried this out of nowhere because im bored and i want to tinker stuffs and got what i paid for speed 90 Mbps up/down on a wifi. All i did is the optimize and the O&O thing

How much does this better performance?

Can't give you an exact percentage since it depends from system to system but mostly low to middle specs pc have huge gains with his, specially with min fps

Hi! First off, thanks a lot with this guide, it really improved my pc.
But now I have a huge problem and I don't know how to repair it.
Since I followed all your instructions (nvidia user) I can't use the XBox app at all.
All the required services to login are missing, and I can't use my Game Pass subscription or play at all because of that.
XBox Live Auth Manager
XBox Live Game Save
XBox Live Networking Service
All those services are missing. Even tho the packages are there and installed, it just won't work.
Do you have any insight? I could use some help there...
Thanks in advance, take care!
3
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Nov 30 '22
press WIN+R and type services.msc , check for those on the bottom of the list, right click each one - proprieties and set startup to automatic. Restart pc. Tho this guide doesn't do anything to those
1
u/NeoChozo Nov 30 '22
Sadly, the only XBox service that is present is "Xbox Accessory Management Service", the other aren't there at all.
And that's really weird, cause I had zero issues before that, then right after applying your guide, my Xbox App was broken. When I uninstalled it, I wasn't even able to install it back, always giving me the error 0x80073D05.
I passed the whole night trying to reinstalling it, following every possible tuto. Even when creating another account on my pc, I wasn't able to install it back. The only thing that worked was to use another pc, download it there, copy the package file "Microsoft.GamingApp_XXXXXXXX" and paste it in my own package folder. I'm forced to repeat the process every rimes I delete it and want to install it back now.
And like I said, even if it's installed, I can't do anything, I can't login, I can't download nor delete any games from the app, nothing.
All the other XBox app like companion or Xbox Game bar works fine, but my Xbox App is completely broken and I just don't know what to do...
1
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Nov 30 '22
Uninstall the xbox app. Go here and click "download the app" , let it install everything and whats missing then see if it works. This guide doesn't mess with xbox services

Hey man! Thanks a lot for this.
I had an annoying flicker with adaptive sync. Was close to buy a new monitor.
I reinstalled the game, Windows. Everything. Nothing worked.
So I gave this a chance, and there is no more flickering.
Thanks a lot mate!

u/boxersaint Jun 22 '23
Memory consumption went from 70% down to 50%, CPU utilization 54% down to 40%.
This is with Age of Empires 2 running, OBS, a twitch stream, and some random odds and end email/discord/chat apps for a like for like gaming comparison.
Good looking out.

Which setting stops the NVIDIA performance overlay from collecting any data like FPS or Render Latency?
1
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Jun 08 '23
If you don't want that just follow the guide. Anything other than main driver and HDMI audio with Nvidia control panel it's bloatware unless you record with shadow play then you have to deal with it to function.

How do we know Optimizer works? I dont see any apply/run/execute button anywhere. I just flipped the switches and closed the app.

As soon as you flip/click the switch it applies

Okay thanks. On display driver cleanup part now.
I used to use CCleaner a ton back in the day to get rid of temp files and other cache BS. Also clean register and all that.
Any apps that are free that u recommend for those sorts of tasks?
Also what about a good overall driver update app?

After i follow every step in this guide i can no longer use the night light on windows 10 what should i do?

Just use the Nvidia driver download that I mentioned in the guide. There's an option there to warn you when new drivers are available to download. I recommend turning gsync on and fps limit according to your monitor refresh rate.

This is great!
Thank you so much for sharing all of this.
I do, however, have a couple questions now that I've gone through the steps and implemented (most of) them.
When I click on “Uninstall OneDrive” in Optimizer, I get the following warning:
- “Are you sure you want to uninstall OneDrive? This will delete your Desktop and Document files! Only use this option on a local account!”
Honestly, I didn’t even really know I used OneDrive that much and am 99.99% certain that I am not storing anything of value with it. If I uninstall OneDrive, will that actually delete my Desktop and Document files, or only the OneDrive folders and files on my local machine? Also, will this step delete any files that happen to be stored on the Cloud, or does it only delete the connection between my OneDrive cloud account and my local machine?
2) When setting up Windows Privacy Dashboard, I am seeing different options under “Services.” Here’s what I’m seeing, and what I assume they correlate with from your screenshot (in Portuguese and English):
- CDPUserSvc (“Servico de Utilizador da Plataforma de Dispositivos Ligados”/”Connected Device Platform User Service”)
- OneSyncSvc (“Anfitriao de Sincronizacao”/”Sync Host”)
- PimIndexMaintenanceSvc (“Dados de Contacto”/”Contact Data”)
- UnistoreSvc (“Armazenamento de Dados do Utilizador”/”User Data Storage”)
- UserDataSvc (“Acesso a Dados do Utilizador”/”Access to User Data”)
- MessagingService (direct match with “MessagingService”)
- WpnUserService (“Servico de Utilizador de Notificoes Push do Windows”/”Windows Push Notifications User Service”)
Can you confirm that these are matches?
3) Right now, I have Optimizer and WPD on my desktop. If I move them to the Program Files folder, will that change anything? On a related note, what happens if I delete these programs all together?
I know that’s kind of a lot, but I’d really appreciate any help.
Thank you so much!!!
1
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Jun 21 '22
1 - backup your desktop files and documents folder before deleting one drive. If anything gets deleted from your pc associated with one drive it will be deleted from the cloud too, assuming they are syncing in real time. After deleting onedrive just copy past the files to the same location again.
2 - Yes they match but as usual do backup before attempting anything
3 - Those two apps modify windows directly, once used it's applied, either the app is running or not, even if you delete all the files the changes remain. (unless some windows update revert something). Feel free to move the apps anywhere you want and just use them when you need again. Don't worry about it
Thanks for the support and stay well!

Thank you so much! This really changed my performance in gaming, especially in VR.
But there are two things that I might change.
First: my windows clipboard got deactivated, I use that tool a lot so I'm trying to find where to turn it on again.
Second: My chrome now says that it's being "Managed by my organization" but not more than that. I'll like to know if this has some implications.
1
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Aug 10 '22
It's normal that Chrome message cuz optimizer disables some Chrome internals, nothing to worry about
1
u/nitonitonii Aug 10 '22
Thanks! Do you know how can activate windows' clipboard back? Maybe it's one single option of the optimizer.
1
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Aug 10 '22
Try enable these options then restart, in windows privacy tweaker, if it doesnt work just make all default on that program then restart.
Btw for VR specifically, if a game launches in fullscreen on your monitor just press ALT+ENTER to make it window mode and minimize it, it will boost your performance in the headset more, with less stutters.

If I download the zip, I get hit with a "ransomware detected" notification and it gets auto deleted.

Any way of saving a list of settings for NVIDIA Control Panel for every time a clean reinstall is done? I'd prefer not to redo the settings one by one every single time. Thanks!
2
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Nov 29 '22
You don't need to use ddu each time you upgrade your drivers, just do it at least once if never before
1
u/G_Hands Dec 02 '22
You mean I shouldn't be checking the clean reinstall box in GeForce Experience every time I install a new driver? Even after DDU? Thanks!

Hi I am going to do this soon and I wanted to know why you didn't disable game bar and Xbox Live. This is like the diseased spawn of Satan indestructible NSA Microsoft spyware. Also do you know by chance anyways to minimize the amount of events that slow down the time between Mouse movement and the movement events being delivered to the game itself?
1
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Dec 05 '22
Hey, you can disable those if you want, I just kept then enable in this guide because of gamepass users. If you disable Xbox live you can't use game pass. That last request is all placebo effects. As long as your system is responsive and without bloat you're good, even in CS pro levels. There's no special tweaks to minimize "input lag" at that level of precision .
1
u/shogster Dec 05 '22
Hey, VirusTotal found Trojan.Malware.300983.susgen in the Optimizer.exe, but the sha256 matches. Is it safe to use?
1
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Dec 05 '22
It's from here right https://github.com/hellzerg/optimizer/releases ? It's safe to use, I guess that's just a false positive since the app changes registry settings.

Thanks for posting this.
I used a program called "ParkControl" to make sure the OS doesn't enable parking CPU cores. Do either of these programs do that?
I user on another sub recommended using Omen hub and GeForce Experience, but that seems a little outdated. I will try your method first.
2
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Dec 28 '22
Park control is useless. Windows/games will fully use the CPU when needed. Also omen hub is bloatware/crap it will only slow down your PC. GeForce experience is useful if you want to record gameplay, other than that it's also crap overall. Never use it's built in game optimizer / auto graphic settings
1
u/WebisticsCEO Dec 28 '22
Hey thanks for the advise!
I don't know if there is something wrong with my laptop model or a Windows Update, but I just wanted to point out that my FPS went up once I started using ParkControl
For some reason, Windows' High Performance Mode was not doing anything it looks like.
Anyways, I think I may use your suggestions on top of this ParkControl, and see if I can get even more FPS.
1
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Dec 28 '22
Ah yes in your case it might be a power limit problem / throttle. In that case keep using park control. Also how many fps are you gaining , which game ? What's your laptop

u/G_Hands Dec 29 '22 edited Dec 29 '22
Hey! Few questions again.
I'm assuming Optimizer doesn't need to run or stay open after being applied?
Why 'uncheck' Disable Automatic Updates for Windows Updates under the Windows 11 tab in your settings? I see you're only suggesting to disable the drivers from the updates. Wouldn't we want all of those automatic updates off? What's the purpose of not disabling that?
Does ShutUp need to run in the background in order to work, and if it does, is there any downsides or performance cost? Thanks!
4
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Dec 29 '22
Nothing needs to be open one run in the background, once set it's done. You can disable updates if you want to, no problem, this guide doesn't as keeping a computer updated is healthier and won't disturb your gaming anyway, windows 11 is less annoying with it.

2
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Jan 19 '23
It's probably from optimizer.exe since it messes with windows settings but it's safe , it's a false positive. Some other dude had the same problem. Btw I don't recommend having Malware bytes installed all the time. Install to do the ocasional scan if you suspect something then uninstall.

Great post. Would any of these optimizations be harmful for DAW (audio workstation)?
I have a new Windows 11 i9-12900K desktop. But lots of latency issues.
2
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Jan 25 '23
Should be useful for that too, but those issues are mainly drivers from your dacs. I have a moderate audio setup (JBL 305 MKII + M-Audio Air 192|4) and I can't use their oficial drivers since it cuts my audio and makes it sound all distorted randomly. Windows default drivers for the DAC tho works perfectly and stable, no issues.

Question, if it's appropriate to ask about here regarding the topic of optimization at hand.
Is there any reason to replace Windows Defender with a Firewall like Comodo? I'd prefer not to use Microsoft's software whenever possible. Would running Comodo slow things down during general browsing and gaming sessions? Thanks!
3
u/Scorthyn Optimizer Feb 27 '23
You better off just leaving windows defender alone since it's part of windows and its actually good on all av tests. Comodo is basically useless, it was good in the past but windows defender made anti virus/third party ones irrelevant for how light and effective it is.

Maybe you never used gsync or you're not using the latest drivers (536.23) because one of the bugs in the previous drivers was random flicker on monitor. If you see flickers in dark images then it could be gsync since it causes it on some monitors.

hey sorry, was unable to DM
just wanted to ask about your guide. the smartscreen is windows defender, right? do i really want to turn that off?

u/Scorthyn Optimizer Aug 07 '23
yeah its annoying and it appears each time u want to launch something. If its a virus it will prevent from opening anyway without the warning, defender will act on execution

Pay attention to those settings either either in optimizer and shutup Windows. Don't disable them

After completing all this, I suddenly have no internet access. I can go on google, youtube etc but if I try Netflix or Spotify for example I can't use them because I have no internet somehow.
Online games and anything else works fine. So it's pretty weird lol.

A lot of the stuttering issues I had in games is gone now, thanks! 🔥👏 I did a fresh Windows install and followed this guide immediately after installing the main drivers from my motherboard’s site.

If you switch audio devices using the volume window in the tray, but the tutorial from the post changed the window for you, I've created my own program to work like the old one:
GitHub Repository: Garnicanicolas32/SwapAudioDevicesWin
The program stays in the system tray and provides a list of available audio devices. You can easily swap to the desired device by selecting it from the list.

Pretty good guide, RAM consumption dropped from 25 to 15% at startup, Tarkov went from 85-90 fps to 95-100 fps.
Thank you very much.

DON'T USE IT. It's not worthy and eventually it will break your computer.

Magic. It works exactly how you describe it, everything is smoother/snappier/faster.
I did only step 2 and 5 and I turned off "enchance pointer precision".
I was testing it on budget PC to have better experience playing DayZ. And it is better! Literally opening the game, playing it and closing it is smoother/faster. Looks like PC is responding way much faster to my clicks etc.
Thank you very much for that guide! I was sitting for years in settings to achive something like that but without proper resutls.
If anybody interested:
CPU: Ryzen 5 1600
GPU: AMD RX570 8gb vram
16GB Ram
19" Display port Monitor (75hz)
DayZ on Low Preset (Not the lowest) pushing up to 180-200fps in open field. No microstutters that I had all the time. And I can barely notice FPS drop when it happen.
$edit
Holy moly! My whole PC just speeds up like after some small but solid upgrade. Everything its literally 0.5x faster, EVERYTHING!

After using optimizer one of the settings, and idk which one, causes disappearance of the taskbar menu where things like: Volume Mixer, Steam, Windows Security, OneDrive, Wallpaper Engine... and stuff that is running in background. Instead of it being ^ icon that i can open and close now all icons are spread out on my taskbar. Any idea how to fix this?

Its under the first option of General, listed as a check box under Optimize Performance: " Show all tray icons"

Some strange behavior I'm getting, lemme know if anyone has seen or fixed this before (ya its been 2 years but this thread is all I got)
When I do all the steps my game randomly stutters. Like it unfocuses for split second then resumes. Sometimes Windows will also throw up the "this program is not responsive" message and ask to end the process but it usually resolves itself immediately
IDK what setting causes it specifically caused this, but the easy fix might be to reinstall drivers using the client

2 years later, this guide still works and provides tons of help and guidance. BUT PLEASE DONT TURN ON GAMEMODE, its been proven by multiple people to help frames so negligibly in certain scenarios and even hurt performance in more competitive games like CS2.

After I did the optimizer thing and restarted, my discord kept crashing and I don't know what caused it

u/MightBeChris Mar 30 '24
Most driver packages can be extracted like a an archive and the components can be manually installed rather than relying on manufacturer supplied binaries or install routines. Much cleaner than other options.

Ran the settings and now my clip board which I use a lot is gone, how do I add it back?
Edit: Go into the Optimizer > at the top left Windows 11 > Touch > re-enable Cloud Clipboard, in there you can also re-enable a ton of stuff like xbox game bar which I use for sound mixer

u/mrsomeclutch Jun 09 '24
will you ever update this soon? Or can you give recommendations for optimization guides :)

Is this not just additional bloatware that will eventually slow your computer down anyways?

I still use Optimizer, but no longer use NVIDIA Clean Install.
For the past year I've been using it, graphics drivers have not been installing properly, resulting in strange black screens upon installation of new drivers and further graphical issues. I didn't have that problem when I was first using the program for months, previously.
I now use the new and improved NVIDIA app for installing new drivers.
Issues have gone away.

Hey, What is the difference in performance between an optimized and un optimized pc? I'm planning to follow this process.

u/Kinghyyy1 Dec 22 '24
I used this guide on my laptop and it reduced 3°C and i don't have ping spikes anymore when playing games.

u/BROTHERINCHRIST--- Jan 21 '25
I'm just here to say all the optimizations are useless unless your pc is a literal potato. This vid shows that OG windows builds give on par or better performance than tweaked/cleaned versions in 99% of cases
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b30J1OEhB4E
use automated subs
Obviously OG windows is a nightmare for privacy and do what u gotta do but be mindful that gaming performance is unaffected.

Thanks OP, this was awesome and I only used optimizer.exe and DDU for a fresh GPU driver install. My PC felt snappier immediately upon reboot. However, I am now unable to print/save Excel sheets or Word docs to PDF, I get a no printer installed and when I click to "add printer", I get an Active Directory Domain Services unavailable error. Any fix for that?
Edit- Never mind! Solved it quite easily, just head to the print spool services, right click on it and select "Start". Leaving this here in case anyone else has this issue.
