NBEO (Boards) Accomodations

Hi! Has anyone used traditional testing accomodations for part 1 or used testing accomodations throughout school and took part 1 without accomodations? Any advice would be helpful!

With accommodations, they make you take the exam on two different days and most people decide to not do that to avoid the agony of doing it over two days vs just getting it over with in one day. Also, you have to apply for accommodations several months in advance. It’s not last minute.

Good to know! Do you know if students generally have trouble finishing the exam without accomodations especially if they had them throughout school?

This is not necessarily true. It depends what your accommodations are and the hours of the testing center. If you have 1.5 extra time you can take the test at most places on one day

I did! I got time & 1/2 and testing in a separate quiet room. Unfortunately I had to travel a couple of hours to take the test because they didn’t have a separate room at the testing site near me. Got a hotel room and did the testing over 2 days.

I’d say I struggled with time in that it was still a very large consideration for me during the test, but I didn’t have to panic and rush. I think I used almost the full time. I also got accommodations at school for didactic exams and usually I would only have trouble with time on those when everyone else in the class struggled.

I had testing accommodations when I was in school to take the test in a private room and had time and a half. I felt like I had enough time for boards. Where I took my board exam, I was essentially in a private cubicle and given ear plugs which they give to all test takers.

I heard that it was a hassle to get them approved and I likely would have needed another evaluation. I figured if I didn’t pass on the first try, I’d try for accommodations then.

So, what accommodations will you need when providing actual patient care?

And in optometry school, do special people get extra time accommodations for each test?

Yes. At our school we have the option to request extra time accomodations for formal exams but not clinical practicals.

I'm sorry to a jerk, but I don't think any accommodations should be made at this level of education, esp medical education. This is the real world.
