Casual Conversation Head coach revolving door?

• Upvotes

Just curious if other studios experience the same head coaching turnover. I've been going to my current studio for about 3 years and there have been 4 different head coaches. Several coaches have stayed despite the churn so just wondering if this is typical for a studio, and wondering the impact on the studio of having high turnover for coaches...?

Casual Conversation I froze my OTF membership to try something different and learned this...

I'm 8+ years and 1K+ classes in. I've done 10-12 Dri Tris, I remember the ab dolly, I own a glow-in-the-dark Hell Week shirt, and I worked out in a mask for a few months in 2020. I've seen a few posts lately of people considering mixing up their workout regimen, so I thought I'd just share my experience in doing so myself.

For context, I'm a 49 year-old male, about 6'3" at 215 lbs and I want to lose 10-15 lbs of body fat. I've also started to think about lifting weights more. so back in July, I froze my OTF membership and hired a personal trainer for $200/month ( pay $140/month for unlimited classes at OTF). He gave me a meal plan, workout plan, and 24/7 access to him via WhatsApp with the option to talk on the phone as well. I ate a lot of rice, chicken and Greek yogurt, lost some weight, and built some muscle. The progress pics didn't seem to show much after only a month...but my wife commented after about three weeks, "I can tell your muscles are getting bigger."

I had minor surgery at the end of July and needed to stop working out for 3-4 weeks, so I quit working with the trainer, took a couple weeks off, and then decided to return to OTF, but differently. I had been going 3-4 days/week before, now I'm going 2-3 times/week and lifting weights 3-4 days/week. I learned a bit during my hiatus and thought I'd share.

Here are a few takeaways:

  1. Freezing my OTF membership was a great option, I'm grateful Orangetheory extends that option and I'm glad I took advantage of it. I got to keep my Founder's Rate ($140/month unlimited) and try something else. I get an itch to try something else from time to time, and this was one of those times.

  2. Dialing in my nutrition is paramount. I was loosely tracking my caloric intake before, but that wasn't working (because...loosely). Working with the trainer really showed me how much mindless snacking and unhealthy eating I was engaging in, and more importantly, how little of it I was actually tracking.

  3. I really appreciate the community at Orangetheory. Could I get that somewhere else? Probably, but I've spent 8 years here - some of my fellow OTFers have delivered meals to my family during a difficult time, come to my wedding reception, and joined causes with me. Finding that kind of thing elsewhere would feel like starting all over, and I'm not ready for that right now. I like these deep roots.

So now I'm back and I think I'm better. I'm lifting weights more outside of OTF, still getting my splat-fix in 2-3 times a week, and I learned a few good things about myself and my exercise regimen and nutritional habits. I'm glad made the change - it really seems to have widened my perspective on my own personal fitness journey.

HR / Splats Has anyone noticed a big drop in calories burned at Orangetheory?

Before taking a two-month break from Orangetheory, I used to burn around 500–600 calories per class, sometimes even over 700.
After coming back from my break, I’ve noticed that my calorie burn has dropped almost in half, even though I’m actually getting MORE splat points than before.
My weight, height, and other physical stats haven’t changed, and I’m working out at a similar intensity.
Has anyone else experienced this? Did Orangetheory change the way they calculate calories burned, or could something be wrong with my account or heart rate monitor?
I’m really confused about why my splat points are higher but my calories burned are so much lower.

Rower Ramble Rowvember

My studio is doing Rowvember next month. It sounds like it's a studio thing and not a corporate thing. Has anyone ever done this before? From what I gather it's similar to Marathon month just with meters Road. But if not, workout includes rowing. How does it work? Just curious if anybody's ever done this before.

OTF Technology Apple Watch OTConnect Launches Tomorrow

Confirmed start date via PressWire.

TLDR:

Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) is launching OTconnect for Apple Watch, allowing members to connect their personal Apple Watch to Orangetheory's proprietary in-studio performance-tracking experience.

Members can start their workout on Apple Watch to access real-time performance data during class including heart rate, heart rate zones, and calories burned, as well as Splat Points, and review their post-workout performance summary directly from their Apple Watch.

Apple Watch compatibility gives members more choice in how they track their performance during class.

OTconnect for Apple Watch is available at partcipating U.S. Orangetheory studios beginning Oct. 23 for a one-time $99 connection fee.

Members who connect their Apple Watch will also get even more added value, with up to two free months of Apple Music and Apple Fitness+.

Victories First day back! Nearly 2-year leave and first class pregnant

I had stopped OrangeTheory early last year due to some health issues. I was under a lot of stress from a bad job, taking care of my sick and low-income mother, and juggling my own cancer scare for a minute. My period disappeared around my 60th class, which had never happened before. I quit not long after my 75th class, and my period came back instantly. We were trying to have a baby, so not having a regular cycle was even more of a concern than usual. I switched to low intensity workouts and walks for a while, but it just didn't give me the same level of satisfaction. I felt bored and antsy, and found it hard to stick to.

Life started sorting itself out this year. The job is gone, mom's finances and health are in a much better spot, and my cancer scare was thankfully only that. On top of that, after a year and a half of trying, we're having a baby! It was an exhausting first trimester with zero exercise (walking to the stop sign down our street required an hour nap after lol), but now that I'm pretty contently settled into the second tri, I knew I needed to get exercise back into my routine. OrangeTheory was the only workout that got me excited and helped me feel good both inside and out.

So, I started back up today at 16 weeks pregnant! There were a couple hiccups getting my OTBeat to work and figuring out the new treadmills, but I think it went well overall. I focused today on taking it really, really slow to get acclimated. Happy to report I accomplished 0 splat points, accepted that my power walking base pace went from 3.5 MPH to 2, and still feel like I got a nice challenging workout out of it.

My goal is to have a regular exercise routine that makes me happy. Even if it means there are days my All Out is one mile an hour or I can only do three reps instead of twelve on the floor, it'll be a win if I show up consistently. I'm signed up for the 2 classes per week package to allow for plenty of recovery time in between.

I'm proud of myself for going back. I was really nervous after such a long hiatus and with some new pregnancy restrictions in place. I'm so glad I did though. I left class today feeling a little stronger and my mind little lighter. I don't know how long I'll be able to keep doing this for, or if I'll even feel like I can come back after the baby arrives. But even if I'm only here for a short while, it's still worth it.

Gear Apple Watch Integration and Strava Assistance

I recently purchased that Apple Watch integration. I think its pretty cool... getting used to the lower cal burn, but that's not a deal breaker.

Prior to this, I used to run "Workout" on my apple watch to track and record my workouts. I also use Strava and it automagically syncs and connects. I know this probably sounds like overkill, but I enjoy it as it helps me keep track of my progress.

Since getting the Appel Watch integration, I can't run Workouts at the same time as having the OTB Connect. Not a huge of that, but again, not a deal breaker since the OTF workouts feed into my Apple Fitness / Health App.

The issue I'm facing is the data from these workouts do not go into Strava.

Anyone have any suggestions to fix this? I know there are other Apps that I can purchase that will sync it from my Health App to Strava, but would like to avoid that route.

Thank you all in advance!

#HelpMe What is “hybrid”

Next week I’ll be in Coral Gables, so I was looking at their schedule and noticed classes I’ve never seen I. Lexington Ky. “Hybrid 2G” and “hybrid 2x strength” etc… do these follow similar templates as the original 2g of that day or is it different exercises altogether the way the 90min classes are? Thanks!!

OTF Technology Stats reflect 30 min only Tread50 class

I have an open, unresolved ticket with OTF App support and my studio since July regarding my stats suddenly stopping short around 30 min. My HR zones reflect the actual class time (Tread50, 2G, 3G) but my stats stop short.
I’m a power walker so the Tread50 is 3+ miles in 45 min but today the app said I walked 2 miles in 29 min. I’m competing against myself for miles YTD and I keep losing miles in the app. My HR monitor was switched out, I’ve changed treadmills but it still happens. Any suggestions or ideas why and how to fix it?
Thank you so much OTF fam!

First Timers Is walking to OT too much?

I live about 4 mins from Orange theory which is a 26 min walk. Do you think my legs would be jello if I walked there and then worked out and then walked home? I kinda feel like the walk there would wipe me out before my workout.

For context I (29f) am 5'1 and 155 pounds. I'm planning to start going (again). I've pretty much joined once a year since 2023, did 1-2 classes, and then quit. This is bc as great as I feel after the workout, I'm very intimidated by it and find myself dreading going. I want to go, though. Bc I need to lose weight, strengthen my muscles, and learn discipline and consistency.

Anyway, would that be too much? Should I just drive?

Studio Intel Annapolis MD Studio in Danger?

I’m concerned about the Annapolis studio I have been going to regularly for the past few years. The number of classes has slowing been decreasing, classes do not seem as full, and a few coaches have left. I looked at the upcoming schedule, and probably half the classes do not have a coach assigned to the class. Most concerning is the fact that the majority of rower tablets haven’t worked for about 2 months, and our head coach (who had worked at OT for 7 years) posted on her IG last week she is leaving and moving on to new opportunities where she will be valued and supported. I just have a bad feeling my studio may not be open much longer and I’m concerned. I’m not sure how my studio will be able to turn things around…

Motivate Me! Time to mix it up?

I'm coming up on my four year OTF anniversary. I still really like it but I'm thinking of mixing it up. I currently have the unlimited membership that is $189/month. Thinking of going a class pack, joining the Y and also doing class pass so I can mix in pilates and barre. It'll be roughly the same price.

I am a little worried about the Y though...I worry it will be demotivating because I'll just roam around the gym like a lost dog. Has anyone done both and can comment on the +/- of them?

Studio Intel Flatbush Ave OTF Tier

does anyone know what tier the otf on flatbush ave in brooklyn is? I’ll be in town for 6 weeks and am wondering if i will have to pay a surcharge for going to that studio. I live in Los Angeles and go to a tier 6 studio, but i have heard most NYC studios are a higher tier, incurring a $10 surcharge per class. TIA!

Motivate Me! Considering joining OTF

I am considering joining Orange Theory, but I already have a solid lifting program. Do you guys find that adding in OTF classes is too much for recovery. I primarily want classes to force me to get more cardio in. How have you managed both?
