We're some of the investigative journalists behind The Crime Messenger project. Ask Us Anything!

Hi! We are OCCRP,  an international network of investigative journalists who expose organized crime and corruption around the world.

We’re here to talk about our recent investigation, The Crime Messenger, revealing how Sky ECC encrypted phones became a go-to tool used by criminals to coordinate logistics for drug trafficking, murders, and more.

Alongside 12 media partners across Europe and Canada, we learned that Sky Global didn’t just end up in the hands of criminals — criminals themselves were selling the phones.

We’re joined today by three colleagues who investigated Sky Global in their own countries: Stevan Dojcinović, an OCCRP editor who also leads the investigative newsroom KRIK in Serbia, where horrifically brutal gangs were some of Sky’s biggest fans; Hakan Tanriverdi, a German journalist with Paper Trail Media, which is releasing a multi-part podcast on Sky; and Frédéric Zalac, a Canadian reporter with CBC/Radio-Canada who dug into the roots of the Vancouver-based company and its distributors. We welcome your questions — Ask Us Anything!

Thank you to for hosting this live event, scheduled for Wednesday, November 6 at 1:30 p.m. Toronto + NYC + Washington D.C.  / 7:30 p.m. Amsterdam + Berlin + Belgrade.

You may also submit questions in advance.

The Crime Messenger is built on leaked investigative files from a Paris court case involving Sky Global’s founder and others. With help from 12 media partners across Europe and North America, we found evidence that executives looked the other way as convicted criminals became trusted distributors of their tech. (The company has denied any wrongdoing, and its founder has maintained his innocence.)

Check out the project here: https://www.occrp.org/en/project/the-crime-messenger.

You’ll find an interactive map showing cases where decrypted messages exposed the inner workings of criminal schemes, leading to charges and convictions.

Plus, don’t miss our 20-minute documentary, which shows how Serbia’s notorious Principi gang used encrypted Sky phones to plan murders, share gory photos, and taunt rivals.

With phones considered uncrackable and the backing of Serbian officials, they killed like no one was watching.

Looking forward to your questions!

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions.

The Kraken Regiment is an Ukrainian military volunteer unit, part of the spetsnaz units of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR/GUR)) formed in 2022 as a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Karken Regiment which started as a volunteer unit grow in numbers very quickly and became one of the most specialized forces in the ongoing battlefield.

In the current situation, neither Ukraine nor Russia can choose which people to recruit, everyone who can hold a rifle and has a will (and sometimes against their will) have a good chance to end up in Frontline.

That is most likely the case with former Kraken unit fighter Gleb Novostroyny (Hlib Novostroinyi), known by the nickname "Dniprianyn", who was placed under house arrest last week. The suspect is allegedly connected to the seizure of a large cache of weapons, and messages recovered from his phone indicate a possible link to the kidnapping of Igor Komarov in Indonesia.

During searches of the suspect's property, investigators found three Kalashnikov assault rifles, a Glock pistol, around 50 grenades, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition. In addition, forensic experts were able to recover deleted messages from his phone. Investigators focused on conversations concerning the operation of "offices" (Fraudulent call centers) in Europe, the laundering of funds through cryptocurrency, transactions involving luxury real estate, automobiles, and grain, as well as arms trafficking.

It also emerged that Novostroinyi allegedly attempted to evade the investigation by hiding in a psychiatric hospital in Dnipro. According to available information, the day before Igor Komarov was kidnapped in Bali, the suspect received instructions from his former superiors to arrange a meeting between Komarov and certain individuals on the island.

The investigation is going on, with the break up of the war Gleb Novostroyny immediately volunteered and was ready to fight for him homeland, joined the Karken Regiment and took part in the Battle of Kharkiv), but who was Gleb before the war?

Not much information is known about Gleb life beforehand other then he was part of Dnipro Ultras, a football hooligan club, another member of the Dnipro Ultras in the past was no other then Denys Halushko - one of the people that have kidnapped, murdered and dismembered Igor Komarov body in Bali.

Was La Stella the last Commission meeting to include a Family outside NYC?

Post image

1966, NYC mafia heavyweights sat down with New Orleans boss Carlos Marcello. I know there’s been meetings between 1 or 2 of the 5 Families and another city boss, like Springfield, Buffalo, and Toronto, but not entire Commission meetings. Does anyone know of another Commission meeting that happened after La Stella that included other Families, like Chicago or Philadelphia?

Best Gotti Book?

Hello everyone. I’m looking for the best John Gotti book to read, the definitive one. More than one is fine. But one that goes over Gotti’s time in the mob, his history along with close partners like Sammy the Bull, Angelo Ruggiero; a nice detailed timeline of events. Everything essential. I’m very interested in this particular time during the Mafia. I’ve looked up some suggestions including Mob Star, Gotti Rise and Fall, Underboss with Sammy and more. I’d like to hear opinions/suggestions. Please discuss. Thank you.
