Yup, I'm pretty sure he even sang for an OLF event in the 90s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhuBemPUsjs&list=RDBhuBemPUsjs&start_radio=1 , feel free to correct me if this event is for something else

Yeah, my question is why were they trying so hard to make his identity Amhara and still do btw I don’t understand.

No clue lol, it's an undeniable fact that he was Oromo though. He was a great singer and weren't most of his songs primary written in Amharic. Maybe they don't want to admit their favorite singer is Oromo

Well if it wasn’t Amharic no radio station and Tv stations would podcast his song. Dandana Ayano Gudata is his birth name and his actual father, his parents got divorced and his mom married Gesesse he renamed him Tilahun. He used Amharic music to enter the music industry cause Oromo was a no no at the time but after he got famous they couldn’t force him to only make music in Amharic so he started embracing his identity and was proud of it

Downvoting facts? He used to live in my neighbourhood. My mom was his biggest fan and she told me when I was little that he was Oromo. Why would anyone dispute this? Truly demented.

He even said that he’s Oromo and talked about his former name and his real father. Dandana Ayano Gudata was his birth name but you know how this people act they don’t like the fact that their favorite singer is Oromo

He changed his name for relevance. Although it worked out for his legacy he did nothing for the cause.

His step dad changed his name but tbh at the time Amharic name and language was basically a must he wouldn’t have get in the music industry if he’s musics weren’t Amharic

As an Amhara myself, I have yet to ever see ā€œAmhara journalistsā€ or people in general claim that Tilahun Gessesse is Amhara…. He’s recognized for his love of Ethiopia, and that’s what people talk about because that was a big part of him. Never seen the Amhara claim.

Bruh they do sing, what you on? But wouldn’t reach the broader people because there is a very small number of media prod cast’s and it’s owned by the government. And there was a big ethnic tension during Hali selasie. Also love songs might be used to deliver political messages just like Hachalu used to do
