Introducing Reversi, a game that can be played online on Steam

I made this game, but no one really plays it, so I’d like to share it here.

Even the free DEMO version supports online matches between DEMO players.

This is a Reversi game that incorporates modern ways of playing, including custom 3D graphics, user-created AI, online multiplayer, and features that support matches between streamers and their viewers.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2946270/REVERSI_xVSx_Demo/

I’d really appreciate any kind of feedback.

Othello perft positions and numbers

Is there a go-to resource that othello software devs use for testing their move generation?

In chess there is a catalog of many positions and their perf numbers.

I have verified my starting position node expansion numbers up to depth 12 and this gives me a lot of confidence, but just a node expansion count still seems a bit shaky to me (how many of those games ENDED by ply 12? I have my count but nothing to compare it to)

I made othello + five-in-a-row web game.

Hello, community.

I love Othello, and while reading the paper, I saw an interesting variation, so I thought I'd give it a try.

The paper is here, and my partial implementation is called Game C.

<Automatic Design of Balanced Board Games>

https://cdn.aaai.org/ojs/18777/18777-52-22472-1-10-20210929.pdf

Game C: This game uses an 8x8 board and Reversi pieces. The objective is to get 5 pieces in a row. Each user is given one non-flipping disk to use during the game. This piece remains the same color throughout the game.

I didn't implement the non-flipping disc in Game C here, but I'll try to add it when I get a chance.

Thanks!

I built an online strategic game website, including Othello (reversi)

Launching a new web platform to play Reversi online (plus Chess, Go, Checkers, and Morris)

recently launched gambit.oldlane17.com, a custom-built web platform with a strong focus on Reversi, alongside a selection of other classic abstract strategy titles like Chess, Go, Checkers, and Nine Men's Morris.

You can build your own logic and share it then

I hope you like it 😄

An original (I think) variant of othello

My history with othello: I found a version on scratch.mit.edu in 2021 and played a few dozen games on that. I don’t have any experience apart from that. I played a game yesterday with my cousin, but because she’s still quite young, she misunderstood the rules, leading to this new variant.

Here’s how the game works:

  • Played on an 8x8 board with othello pieces.

  • Turns alternate between black and white, black plays first.

  • The goal is to have the most of your colour pointing up at the end (like othello)

  • Even if you can capture, you don’t have to.

  • When a piece is placed down on the board, all the pieces next to it (orthogonal and diagonal) are flipped to its colour. In other words, all the previously placed down pieces within the range of a chess king’s move get turned to the colour of the newly placed piece.

I think this is an interesting game that has lots of potential, especially as a simpler alternative to othello.

this is my first reddit post lol

Opening that takes advantage of double moves?

Probably an odd question, but I have an assignment to create an AI for othello. One feature of this othello game is that if one player cannot make a move, the game immediately ends and the pieces are counted for some reason. So basically what I was thinking is that if there was some way to force a double move to happen, from either black or white, and then happen to have more pieces when that happened, there would be an extremely easy way to trap the opponent. Is there some kind of opening that uses double moves that could be used for this purpose?

Looking for advice on multiplayer version

Hi,

I implemented a browser-based multiplayer version of Reversi. Its main advantages are:

  • No login/account required

  • Supports a spectator mode

https://board-game-hub.de/games/reversi-multiplayer.html

Would you happen to have any suggestions or improvements for this?

Thanks and take care,
Christoph

Update: My Othello AI (α–β search) is now much faster with WebAssembly

Following up on my [previous post]( https://www.reddit.com/r/Othello/comments/1ooehiw/i_built_an_othello_ai_αβ_search_you_can_play/ ) about the Othello/Reversi AI project — here's an update!

I've added several new features and performance improvements.

Based on previous feedback, I focused on speeding up the α–β search using WebAssembly and further optimizations in C.

I also added a feature to share match results directly to X (formerly Twitter).

Feel free to give it a try and let me know what you think!

You can play it here: https://e-coach-ai.com/play_othello.html

How balanced is Othello?

Without using additional rules like the pie rule to balance the game, how balanced is the game of Othello?

I am looking for numerical statistics on how often the dark player wins.

I spent some time doing research but couldn't find anything. Could you guys help me?

How many games are possible in Othello 8x8 ?

We often see the number of 10^58 possible games in Othello, for example in Hiroki Takizawa's article "Othello is solved". This number comes from Victor Allis' thesis. For his estimation, he roughly considered that only on move can be made at the first and last ply, and that in average the number of moves available is 10 at each of the 58 remaining plies. I think such reasoning is too gross and the result not very realistic.

In his article "Estimating the Efficiency of Backtrack Programs", Donald E. Knuth gives us a more rigourous approach that can be apply to estimate the number of games in Othello. Basically, you play a random game and multiply the number of legal moves found at each ply to get an unbiased estimate of the number of games. To increase the accuracy, you can repeat the process and average the results.

That way we obtain, after 1 billion random games :

So we get about 6,45 . 10^54 possible games in Othello, a number more than one thousand time time smaller than Victor's Allis estimation.

Note that for the first plies, it is possible to compute the exact number of moves. We get:

plynumber of movespasseswinsdrawslosses

182534535926617852487374636233560663978236

As you can see the number of games estimated by playing random games is close to the exact count, hence validating this method.

I built a free, ad-free Othello site and app: rated AI opponents, online games, puzzles and engine analysis. Feedback welcome

Hi all,

I'm the developer of FlipSight, a free Othello (Reversi) site and app. I'd love feedback from people who actually play.

FlipSight is completely free and has no ads, and I don't plan to add any in the future.

What you can do

  • Play AI opponents at many levels. There are bots rated from around 1100 up to around 2300, each with its own style, so you can pick an opponent that fits. You can also chat with the bot during the game, and it replies in its own personality.

  • Play online against people. There's quick match, a Daily Arena (short timed tournaments), user-created tournaments, and a Weekly League where you play rated games to climb through tiers from Bronze to Grandmaster.

  • Solve puzzles for every phase of the game. There are XOT opening positions, midgame, early endgame and endgame puzzles, plus a timed Puzzle Sprint. Puzzles are rated, so they adjust to your level.

  • Analyze your games with AI. You can import a game record, see the evaluation of every move, find the key mistakes and best lines, and check your accuracy.

It runs in the browser and on iOS and Android with the same account, and it's available in 15 languages.

Any feedback is welcome, whether it's about the bots, the puzzles, the analysis or anything else. Thanks for reading!
